When it comes to science fiction scoring I always like to see the composer create an established universe; something unique for the characters to exist in. If anyone has played Mass Effect then they know what an amazing score can do to transport you emotionally into a world. With In Time Craig Armstrong achieves this right off the bat. The score isn't trying to be a futuristic score, but with the story and the images it automatically becomes that. You can listen to any track from here without knowing what the music is from and you already feel like you're somewhere different.

The music is simple in approach, but then again those are the best scores. Grand emotions come from simplistic approaches. Any composer who tries to do too much gets bogged down in complex themes and structures that end up taking away from the story on the screen. This is not a minimalist score, and for the record I despise minimalist scores (yes that means Philip Glass). What Armstrong does here is use electronic sounds to lay a foundation down and then build on top of them. There is always a sense of longing brought upon in the music as if we are supposed to want to escape the world that Armstrong has built musically. Tension is always present and you always feel a tad bit unsettled. If I have one gripe with the score is that the music stays at a certain level, and even when the action tracks kick in it never builds that much. I feel like the action needed more instead of just percussive electronics and pulsating strings. They don't really build off the amazing soundscape that Armstrong establishes, but they work just fine.

While In Time may be forgettable I don't think the score is. I think Armstrong did something quite great here.

Craig Armstrong has one of the most interesting careers in contemporary classical and film music. Not only does he write marvellous scores for the concert hall (see Craig Armstrong: Memory Takes My Hand for some of his more classical pieces), but he has had a career in collaboration with U2, Massive Attack, and Elisabeth Fraser (of the Cocteau Twins). He has a number of scores worth your time, including Moulin Rouge and Romeo + Juliet (both by Boz Luhrmann). His score for "In Time" works as a very nice bridge between some of his more "classical" filmic works, and his mastery of electronic music (The Space Between Us, As If to Nothing). His music is tender, limned in light--piano based melody, played with restraint and grace is outlined by electronics, as if wrapped in sunset. His urgent passages are fairly conventional "chase music" pieces familiar to any lovers of film scores, but many pieces have a languid sensuality and a haunting beauty (see the Main Theme, Dawn in Dayton) that have kept me listening intently. Ultimately, this is a very enjoyable soundtrack that is just what I need as I write, as I think, and is great for late night driving.

DISCLAIMER: English is not my first language so this will be a pretty short review.

That being said, I really don't have much to say other than this soundtrack being nothing less than amazing, great to listen to, and the melodies are spectacular.

The only con: The tracks are too short. I like to see long tracks (4-5 minutes), cause I feel it's kind of an adventure where the music can take you! (Mombassa anyone? from the Inception soundtrack).

Other than that, this is an outstanding soundtrack, and I'm glad I bought the CD. It's not as popular as it should be in my opinion. This soundtrack should have so many more reviews!

This is a pretty decent soundtrack, I really enjoyed the main theme and the different versions of it the composer elected to do. There's no real reason I didn't give it 5 stars but I only give 5 stars if I like every single track or pretty close to every single track, but I liked probably half the songs on the soundtrack, so that's why I gave 4 stars instead

A great score to present the story in a well illustrated mood and matching setting of textures and lighting. Craig Armstrong tells the emotional tale well as the visual artistry unfolds and the combination of sight and sound intrigues you to take personal interest in the characters' plight and the path they are walking.

Excellent directing and scoring collaboration!
