Book Description

Time Out Guides May 24, 2007
A high-speed hop from London, Paris, Amsterdam, and Cologne, the city at Europe's crossroads is as distinguished, diverse, and distinctive as any continental capital. Home to the Surrealists and the Breughels, Brussels is a living monument to art nouveau, and it enjoys a gastronomic reputation second to none — complemented by boundless bar crawls and style-conscious shopping sprees. Written by local journalists, writers, and experts, Time Out Brussels offers an informed and detailed excursion around the city and its attractions, from the Gothic and Guildhouse past of the Grand Place to Brussels' present-day role as Europe's capital, taking in its beers and boutiques, its markets and mussels, and its comics and chocolates along the way. Beyond Brussels, the guide also delves into the three main cities of Flanders: fashion-conscious Antwerp, medieval Ghent, and Bruges, Belgium's biggest tourist draw. Day trips dip each side of the French-Flemish divide, from the coast around Ostend to Liege, nestling on the Dutch and German borders. Color photos and maps throughout enhance this new edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Needs updating!, March 17, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Time Out Brussels: Antwerp, Ghent and Bruges (Time Out Guides) (Paperback)
I'm usually a big fan of Time Out guides: whenever they're available, that's what I go for first. However, this time I have to say I was rather disappointed. The guide was last updated in 2007, and a lot of things have changed since. For example, the Magritte Museum is no longer out of town, but in the city center now. And the museums no longer offer a combined Sunday ticket, but an all-week "combi-ticket". Also, several of the neighborhood the guide recommends as "colorful" are in fact gritty and unpleasant. As much as I like the color pictures and the colorful language, I think next time I go with good old Frommers...

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book on Belgium, January 30, 2010

This review is from: Time Out Brussels: Antwerp, Ghent and Bruges (Time Out Guides) (Paperback)
I just spent 2 weeks in Belgium, and although I had a lot of guide books, including Lonely Planet and Rick Steves, this one by Time Out was the best by far. It has the most information and the best recommendations. It's a good idea to call ahead to some of the restaurants, either for reservations or just to make sure they're still open. This book also has good, clear maps, which is critical in Brussels.
