5.0 out of 5 stars Great for the busy mom!

1.0 out of 5 stars My son now thinks time-out is a treat :(
I set my son out for the first time on this shiny blue surface and he thought he had just been rewarded for biting his brother. Distracted by the lights and graphics, he sat there until the song played, then wanted to play more with this new toy. When I first saw this item honestly I laughed however a week later I ended up purchasing it. As a mother of four very young children I have a tendency of putting children in time out but getting distracted by life. As a result two things happen: One my toddler will sneak out and I don't realize it till much later or Two they end up in time way too long. This pad solved both problems, it alerts me if my toddler tries to escape and it sings a fun song when time out is over so that I can talk with my children.

One piece of advice thought. Your child may find this fun at first, mine did, therefore I made sure to explain what it was for and did not allow them to play with it. The novelty of it when it first arrived soon dissipated and they now do not want to be on the time out pad.

He gets off and on it, really trying to prod us to react to the alarm when he gets off, but my goal with time-outs is to get him to calm down and stop the previous behaviour so it works well for that. You can move it from 1 to 5 minutes with a coin to turn the dial, so the child can't really change it. He also occasionally tries to move it around. When we first got it he would turn it on for fun, and one bonus is if no weight sits on it after it's been started it will just give a little tune and turn back off after a minute or so without the annoying alarm going off.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for a toddler, March 7, 2009
This review is from: Time Out Pad - Blue (Toy)
This time out pad is perfect for a toddler who has no concept of time. This pad provides visual and auditory signals. It is also really great for ADHD kiddos.

I bought this hoping to make time outs easier. We have a 5 year old who rarely makes it to time out - typically the first warning is sufficient for him. This pad works perfectly for him. He sits there quietly and watches for the lights. He learned very quickly that he couldn't scoot off and play around even for a second because I would know even if I had stepped around the corner to change a diaper! For him, this pad works perfectly. Our 3 year old is a handful. I had hoped this would make the biggest difference for him because it's hard to enforce time out when he will run away from the corner. We have a 13 month old, so I can't leave her to chase him and put him back in time out a la Supery Nanny for hours on end. For him, this was amusing. He tested to see how many times he could get off the pad before the pad "gave up." He got that it wouldn't, but he also picked up on the fact that the time doesn't START OVER. The timer will PAUSE until he sits back down, whereas I always start the timer over and make him sit the full 3 minutes if he gets up. I wish this pad had that option. He could sit for 10 seconds at a time, with me still putting him back on the pad. I will say that he does like the little tune at the end and now that we've had it a few days, he's treating it less like a toy and more like the consequence it is supposed to be.
From a disciplinary standpoint, I give it 4 stars for the lack of option to re-start the timer versus pausing the timer. 3 minutes to sit doesn't seem like anything when you have to chase the kid around the house a few times and it winds up dragging out over 20 minutes.

From a technical standpoint, I give it 3 stars. The pad is TINY. Our 5 year old is very petite - he's still wearing a 3T in shorts with no problem and his little tush barely fits on the pad, so if he wiggles a bit, it sets off the sensor. We started with the pad on the floor in the kitchen and had to move it to a chair because if the boys sat cross-legged, if they shifted their weight from one butt cheek to the other, the sensor went off. On the chair, they could sit with their weight evenly distributed and there were no false alarms. Another thing - the plastic and the screw on the back is WEAK. We have a tiny screwdriver set and the metal in the screw stripped before we could get the screw out. My husband had to mess with it at work to get the screw out and then replaced it with another one. It looked as though someone had originally screwed it in too far because the surrounding plastic had the white stress marks. I'm waiting for the plastic to chip when I have to replace the batteries.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great deal and good product, December 21, 2009

This review is from: Time Out Pad - Blue (Toy)
My 22 month old granddaughter lives with me. I don't like seeing her in timeout but this works much better than threats and screams. She understands when she's on it that she can't get up, although she does push how far she can go before the alert starts. This pad worked so much better than the gorgeous timeout chairs I had seen and priced at over $100. They just seemed to be too pretty to save for only the timeout situations. This pad can go anywhere. I wish I could figure out how to increase the length of time for the lights and buzzers because I know the time will come when it needs to be a little longer than it is now. Other than that this is a good choice for getting the job done.

They thought the naughty buzzer was fun, too.

This product looked like it would be great for our kids! When we received it the screw that holds the battery door closed was to short and wouldn't hold the door closed. the door and screw with battery just falls out! This is a chocking hazard so we called the # on the product insert. They said they no long distribute the product and they have no contact # for us to get a refund or replacement. Do not buy!!!!

I have a very high-strung 4 year old. For some reason, this time-out pad has made a world of differnece with his behavior! I don't know why really, but he has definitely started taking his time-outs much more seriously, since I have begun using this.

I love how the alarm goes off if they get off while your not looking. The only thing I don't like is that the timer doesn't start over if they get off.

I love this mat. It makes time outs productive and easy in my house. Before time outs were guesstimates. I intended for my child to sit for 3 minutes but by the time they sneak out a couple of times they might have been there for 4 or 5 minutes. With this there is no guessing and my kids stay in time out! They stay for the correct amount of time and you can see them watch the lights and get excited they finished their time out! Its also small enough to take with you. I love it. I thought it was a little on the high side but would highly recommend it.
Thank you.
