Book Description

Time Out Guides February 16, 2007
Think 'Venice,' and images of gondolas drifting along misty canals and pigeon-feeding visitors dwarfed by the splendor of St. Mark's and its square come unavoidably to mind. If it's Venetian icons visitors are after, this magical city will never disappoint. But for a more rounded experience, the longtime residents and experts who have contributed to the fifth edition of Time Out Venice lead travelers down back streets and into campi and calli where few tourists tread: to hidden churches with hidden artworks; to architectural and sculptural gems in concealed courtyards; and to districts where the everyday life of Venice goes on in time-honored, washing-festooned, market-haggling fashion. This guide explores every inch of the fabled city on water — with particular attention paid to mid-price and alternative accommodations and dining venues — and covers the entire Veneto region — its other historic cities, rolling vine-covered hills, ski resorts, and surprisingly wild club scene.

I've tried most every travel guidebook there is and the TIME OUT books cover the most extensive array of information. No longer will you need one book for the best sites and one for restaurants, etc. This one will give you pretty much everything you will need to know to have an enjoyable trip in Venice.

3.0 out of 5 stars There's a lot in it, but..., January 30, 2009
This review is from: Time Out Venice: Verona, Treviso and the Veneto (Time Out Guides) (Paperback)
I trust Time Out for background info (maybe I shouldn't?) but I've found that, particularly with this guide, they seem to like every listing they've put in (and there are a lot) without really differentiating between them. Not much help when you know you don't have time to explore everything...

2.0 out of 5 stars Blah, January 16, 2007
i was really hoping this would be a great book, but i was severely disappointed. this was the only book i bought for Venice, and i wish i had saved my money. i ended up getting a DK eyewitness book and it was way better. the information didn't seem to be up to date, and we found better suggestions from our hotel.

The origins of La Serenissima, as Venice would come to be known, were far from serene: rampaging Visigoths, Huns, Ostrogoths and Lombards drove thousands of terrified inhabitants of mainland towns out on to the muddy, flood-prone islets and sand banks of the lagoon in the fifth century AD. Read the first page
