When one thinks of a 1930's "Crooner" one thinks of either one or two things, the masculine voices that boo boo boo, and never miss a beat like Bing Crosby's baritone, or one thinks of the effeminate wimpy winers like Rudy Vallee, that are nasaly and somewhat dated, and lack a sense of rhythm. Well Austin falls in the second category, however if it weren't for singers like Austin how could we fully appreciate singer like Crosby, and Louis armstrong who re-invented pop singing. Austin's voice is wimpy but he's fun to listen to, and very lightwiegt easylistenin.' He can swing when he wants to, and can even sound masculine at times, but mostly he will be remembered for "My Blue Heaven". This cd is essential for anyone who wants to delve into the wonderful history of The Crooners of the 20's & 30's. Of course you'll want to start with Crosby, Russ Columbo, Al Bowlly, and Rudy Vallee, before you delve deeper into the "B" crooners liek Austin, Whispering Jack Smith, Seger Ellis, Red McKenzie(who actually is very masculine), and Dick Todd.
