Art Davis Has Recorded With Everybody, February 4, 2011
This review is from: Time Remembered (Audio CD)
There were 2 things that caused me to obtain this disc: first, Art has recorded with so many artists I admire over his decades long career. They include Coltrane, Max Roach, Dizzy Gillespie; I could go on and on.
Art has had a distinquished career by any standard. He has had a college teaching career, and gained a degree as a psychological counselor. Among other achievements, Art also was one of the first African-American members of the NBC TV orchestra, joining Clark Terry.
Second, a magazine listed several recordings that were excellent as audiophile test discs. Specifically, this recording was recommended as an excellent test for your audio system to see if it reproduced bass sounds well.
I can't attest as to whether this recording is excellent in bass reproduction, since my stereo system is not of a stereophile lover's quality. However, you can be reassured it is very good sounding.
Regarding the jazz contained in this recording, I can reassure you that this is very good hard bop jazz.
The quartet consists of Art on bass, Ravi Coltrane on saxes, Herbie Hancock on piano, and Marvin "Smitty" Smith on drums. Enough said!
Ravi speaks highly of Art as a mentor and guide. Ravi does not try to imitate his late father, John Coltrane. Instead, he is a solid sax player in his own right. Herbie and Marvin play at their usual high level.
3 of the 7 compositions are by Art. They are fine compositions, especially his 3 part suite "Time Remembered." I also enjoyed the groups interpretations of T. Monk's classic "Evidence."
