This book is full of sneaky lessons; for example, you can't help but notice that things that rhyme aren't always spelled the same way--nor do things spelled the same way always rhyme. And once a child begins fooling around with words, rhymes, and sounds, a new appreciation for language is bound to emerge, even if a child doesn't notice it happening at first. This book may be a hook to help kids yearn to learn (or pine to rhyme).

Grade 3-5-This dictionary, which contains 237 groups of rhyming words, opens with a section on using rhymes and directions for using the book. Then, beginning with "a" sounds and ending with "y" sounds, the word groups provide young poets with many choices. Each entry is listed in alphabetical order at the end of the volume, along with the page on which it is found and the number of the word group to which it belongs. Short, snappy poems, illustrated with pen-and-ink sketches, are scattered throughout. While this is a good resource for novices, Sue Young's The Scholastic Rhyming Dictionary (Scholastic, 1994) spans a wider ability range and might be a better choice.

When asked to write a poem, many children have difficulties because their vocabularies are limited. This book, which lists a set of very common words and all the common words that rhyme with them, will be invaluable to the youthful poet. There are two lists in the book.

The first is a listing of 237 groups of words where all in the group rhyme and the second is an alphabetical list of all the words that appeared in the first. Also included is a set of illustrations with a short verse. They are simple, on the order of:

Katie Baytee had a curse:

She only spoke in rhymes and verse.

Her mother took her to a nurse,

But after that, her verse got worse.

Written at the level of the late elementary child, this is an excellent reference book for the class when the assignment is to write a short poem.

I had to return this used book. It was advertised as having a library binding, but was a low quality paperback. I was disappointed, but love Amazon's return policy. Thanks to Amazon, all I lost is time.

Be careful purchasing used items from Amazon sellers. I bought from 2 different sellers and had this happen both times! I wish there was a way to contact the seller to be sure of the product before ordering. However, it would REALLY be responsible of the seller to list items correctly!
