Great Jazz, April 22, 2006
This review is from: Time Is Right (Audio CD)
I learned about Woody Shaw by accident: I took my mom to the Village Vanguard in New York when she was visiting me, so I could show her a "real N.Y. jazz club." Woody Shaw was playing that night with Steven Turre on trombone, and I was completely blown away by the performance. Shaw's catalogue is uneven; this recording is a very good presentation of him at his best in a live setting. (I believe in was recorded in Italy.) If you are at all interested in Woody Shaw, this is a must-have. In fact, as far as I'm concerned this album ranks up there with Miles Davis's "Kind of Blue" as one of the greatest jazz trumpet recordings of all time, but I will not presume to claim any kind of authority beyond my own tastes in jazz in support of that statement.
