Editorial Reviews

2013 release from the rooster-haired Rock icon, his first album of new material in almost 20 years. Time marks Stewart's long-awaited return to his songwriting roots and features 12 tracks, 11 of which he wrote and produced. Time was born from a burst of inspiration from which he rediscovered his voice as a songwriter and rekindled his gift for writing the honest, nerve-touching narratives that have been the cornerstone to the first three decades of his career. Since 1991, Stewart, the lyricist and melodist behind such staples as "Tonight's The Night," "You Wear It Well," "You're In My Heart," "The Killing of Georgie" and the indelible "Maggie May," had simply lost his songwriting muse. But, beginning in 2011, during the period he began working on what would become his internationally best-selling autobiography, Rod, it returned.

First things first. Time is flat out the best album Rod Stewart has put forth in 25 years. To say he's found his voice after 40 years in the music business, and after crafting some of rock's finest songs, would be ludicrous. But he seems to have found a very strong second wind as a songwriter. And the material produced by this late career songcraft sounds like the Rod Stewart of old--only different. There are some familiar phrases and themes but it's clearly an older, wiser, and perhaps even happier Rod Stewart who's telling the stories and making the observations. While several songs on Time recall other Stewart songs, the album itself is like no other Stewart album. Rod and his musical partner Kevin Savigar have produced a rich collection of original songs--with one cover--to create a superb album that Rod Stewart fans--old and young--are going to soon place among the top ten albums of Stewart's career.

Time is not Gasoline Alley or Every Picture Tells a Story or even Out of Order. Nor should it be. Rod and Co. might tell you it is, but that's nothing more than Rod selling records. (Remember all those myths that were dispelled in "Rod: The Autobiography"? Who do you think started and/or perpetuated all of them?) Time is a modern day Rod Stewart album--it does feature electronic instrumentation, Pro Tools, drum machines, overdubs, etc. on a few tracks. But Stewart and Savigar never let these get in the way. The productions enhance, they do not detract. Stewart and Savigar know it's neither 1971 nor 1986.

Oh, and the voice itself--it's nearly as good as ever. Definitely older, definitely weaker (don't believe me--go find a live recording from about 1984 and compare) but still full of charisma, and capable of so much feeling and emotion.

Rod Stewart's first album of new material in nearly 20 years is here. Considering the raspy rocker recently released his memoir, Rod: The Autobiography, the album's title, Time, is appropriate. During his time, Stewart has sold hundreds of millions of albums, been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice and won a Grammy.

Time is a solid effort by Stewart that every fan should check out. While it's not perfect, the majority of the album is very good. Below is my track-by-track review:

"She Makes Me Happy"

-With an infectious chorus and a joyous vocal, this sets the tone of what's to come. While it has a modern sound, the violins and mandolin give it that classic Stewart sound fans have come to love.

"Can't Stop Me Now"

-The shoe-stomping beat and visual lyrics of this song makes it similar to "Rhythm of My Heart." Being that it's about Stewart's struggle to become a successful musician, it's an inspirational message that's sure to resonate with many people.

"It's Over"

-This is my favorite song on Time. I'm a sucker for ballads, and this is as good as it gets. The lyrics are about Stewart going through a divorce and the pain that came with it. His voice sounds great on this track and the chorus is haunting. This is one I could listen to again and again. It's that good.

"Brighton Beach"

-According to Stewart, this is the one that started it all; it made him realize he could still write a quality song. It's an extremely mellow, acoustic number with beautiful lyrics. It's very different from the previous songs but still a worthy addition to the album.

"Beautiful Morning"

-Having bought Stewart's Christmas album, I was granted a free download of this song months ago.

I have been a Rod Stewart fan for a very long time and have most of his albums. I have also seen him in concert at least ten times and I must say, he never disappoints. He is a fantastic singer and performer. I also read his great autobiography when it came out and loved it because it was so real and funny as well as very moving.. Still, I didnt know what to expect when I heard that his newest album, "Time", was coming out, featuring all new songs that Rod either wrote himself, or co-wrote with others . I even stood in line yesterday to buy it, and rushed home to play it last night. Well, the bottom line is that the album is just wonderful, the very best I have heard from Rod in years. My boyfriend and I played it three times and every time we heard it, we loved it more. This morning it is playing for the fourth time as I write this review. The songs are fantastic, and Rod's raspy, simply fabulous voice has lost nothing with the years. In fact, I think he just gets better and better. I would suggest that everyone who reads these words rush out today to buy it, or download it if that works for you. And don't forget Mothers Day. I don't think there is a mother in the world who wouldnt be thrilled to receive "Time" as a gift this Sunday. Thank you, Rod, for another thrilling musical experience.

It's going to be a bomb though!
It's 2013. Very few albums go gold or platinum anymore. No, it's not a huge hit in the US but it did hit #1 in the UK and appears to be staying in the top 3 for another week--two weeks in the top 3. Sales will remain steady in both countries over the next six months as Rod does the concerts. Not... Read More

Just heard Finest Woman on the radio and I love it. If the album is like this song it is going to be a hit. Our rock 'n roll Rod is back.

Can't tell for sure if you are joking but in my opinion his best music is what he has written.
