Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The tension starts early and builds throughout the third installment in Melton's romantic suspense series featuring Navy SEALs. Sara Garret, after living in fear of her hard-as-nails JAG prosecutor husband, decides to flee after he terrorizes their son, Kendal. An acquaintance, SEAL sniper Chase McCaffrey, who appeared in Melton's In the Dark, reluctantly offers a means of escape. Headed to Oklahoma to check on a ranch inherited from an abusive stepfather, Chase decides not to let memories of his own miserable childhood keep him from helping mother and son. Soon he's using all his skills to keep himself, Kendal and Sara safe. When they arrive at the ranch, they discover that Chase's dead stepfather played a key role in a group of white supremacists. As Sara's husband closes in and the skinheads prove increasingly dangerous, Chase's growing love for Sara presents an even greater threat as it undermines the grip he's held on his emotions all these years. Melton, who writes medieval romances as Marliss Moon, doesn't miss a beat in this involving story. (Feb.)

From Booklist

After Garret, her abusive husband, strangles her son's pet to "teach him a lesson," Sara begs Chase McCaffrey to help them disappear. Using his SEAL training, he spirits them away to his forsaken Oklahoma ranch, an unexpected legacy from his hated stepfather, but ends up clashing with a group of skinheads using the place to store illegal weapons in preparation for a terrorist attack. Meanwhile, Garret is hot on Sara's trail with vengeance in mind and an Amber Alert in force to help him. Melton's edgy contemporary romantic suspense winds up the SEAL Team Twelve trilogy--Forget Me Not (2004) and In The Dark (2005)--with emotional fireworks as well as some fancy sniper shooting, courtesy of Chase's military training and expertise. Once again Hannah Geary Lindstrom plays a pivotal part in the proceedings, facilitating romance while she protects Sara and her son's new identities, and puts the FBI's vast resources to work ferreting out the skinheads' plans. More About the Author

I was fortunate to enjoy an exotic childhood growing up overseas. Entertainment came in the form of reading, riding on elephants in Laos, Sunday visits to museums in Paris, and tracking tigers in northern Thailand. With the world my home, I excelled in language, music, and, above all, story-telling. Language is my thing, which is why I've taught Spanish, ESL, and linguistic at various insitutions, including the College of William and Mary, my alma mater. Because I'm the wife of a retired Navy veteran, writing military romantic suspense suits me best. I live with my husband and many children near Virginia Beach, where I'm inspired by real-life stories of Navy SEALs' sacrifices and their struggles to combat terrorism.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Page-Turner, February 3, 2006

(VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Time to Run (Navy SEALs, Book 3) (Mass Market Paperback)
Marliss Melton's Navy Seal series concludes with a very strong, compelling, and completely stand-alone entry focusing on Navy SEAL sniper Chase McCaffrey. Losing those he'd loved at an early age and having suffered an abusive childhood from a vicious stepfather had left Chase emotionally bereft. As a sniper for the SEALS Chase was perfect for the job, not allowing emotional attachments in his life kept him at the top of his game. Sara Garret, a woman he'd only met a few times, begged him for help to escape the tyranny of her abusive husband, a JAG prosecutor. Chase couldn't turn down the woman with the sad but terrified eyes and the young son she was desperate to protect. Along the way to freedom, the adventures they shared brought Chase, Sara, and her young son closer. With each new day away from her husband, Sara gained back the strength and courage to begin anew even as an even bigger danger from a white supremacist group threatened to destroy the happiness that was almost within her reach. Love was not an emotion or an option for Chase in his line of business, but for a future with Sara it was the one emotion that was making him re-think his career choice.

From the very first pages, Melton engages the reader with a riveting style of writing pitting two unlikely protagonists together. From the first moment Sara gathered the courage to ask for help to escape, she questioned her choice of heroes. Chase was as emotionally detached as one could ask for, though it must have been fate itself that made her chose such an unlikely source. Melton keeps the action going and the romance elements in perfect harmony of the characters personalities in a very realistic manner that takes this read from the mundane to the exceptional. As my initial introduction to this author, I found this an outstanding read!

4.0 out of 5 stars Action-pacjed romantic caper, June 7, 2006
By
This review is from: Time to Run (Navy SEALs, Book 3) (Mass Market Paperback)
Sara Garret has had enough. Her husband Bart, a JAG lawyer, is abusive and rules his home with an iron hand. When he goes too far (killing his son Kendal's pet because he was making too much noise), Sara decides that she and Kendal have to get away. She enlists the help of Chase McCaffrey, the tough as nails SEAL sniper who befriended her in the past. He reluctantly agrees to give them a ride west and to obtain new identity papers. Chase is a battled-scarred warrior who just signed up for re-enlistment.

They arrive in Oklahoma to reclaim his childhood home and clear out any traces of his racist stepfather who stockpiled weapons. Soon it is apparent that Chase not only has to protect them from Bart, but also a band of inept white supremacists that want the weapons for their own devious use. With the aid of FBI agent Hannah (from "In the Dark"), Chase helps to bring the group to justice.

Sara returns to Oklahoma with hopes of renting Chase's farm and resuming a relationship when his latest tour of duty is over. Chase is everything that Bart is not, and her treats Kendal with such compassion. Is it possible that the two can make a future together, or will Bart close in on them?

Melton has penned another exciting SEAL romantic mystery, with many old characters reappearing, particularly wise-cracking agent Hannah Lindstrom. Her dialogue is realistic, as is her character development with just the right amount of tension tossed into the mix. Fans of her previous novels will want to add this action packed novel to their collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling, February 20, 2006
This review is from: Time to Run (Navy SEALs, Book 3) (Mass Market Paperback)
Sara's abusive husband has gone too far this time so she takes their 10 yr old son Kendal and finally leaves him. She has been secretly saving and planning for this day for a long time but she needs help. She asks navy SEAL Chase McCaffrey to help them. After initially turning them down, Chase changes his mind and comes to their aid.

They go on the run and head to Oklahoma where Chase is going to fix up the house left to him by is deceased stepfather. He assumes Sara and Kendal will be safe and secluded there, but he is wrong. Not only are they hiding from Sara's husband but Chase's stepfather was a white supremacist and some of his cohorts want the guns he kept in his house.

Chase is determined to keep Sara and Kendal safe, but as he is fighting off one threat, another is closing in. Sara's husband is tracking them down. If they can survive, Sara hopes to have a future with Chase. But Chase is still a navy SEAL and he has a job to do. He'll have to make a choice and Sara is hoping he chooses her and Kendal.

Time to Run is a great story. It's full of action and drama. The sexual tension between Sara and Chase along with the anticipation of which threat will attack first keep the pages turning. I was engrossed in the story wondering if Sara's husband would find them and what would happen if he did.
Although poor Sara has been through so much, she perseveres because of her inner strength and her love for her son. Chase is both handsome and tough. He is capable of handling anything. Ms. Melton has written a suspenseful and romantic story. Time to Run is thrilling and will keep you on the edge of your seat!
