Book Description

March 1, 2006

“A spare disciplined prose that no one will be able to read without thinking of Hemingway. But MacEnulty has made the style her own.”—Observer

“MacEnulty writes with sympathy, wisdom and—an unexpected blessing—humour.”—Guardian

“The dirty realistic landscape sometimes steps aside for bittersweet coming-of-age flashbacks, but mostly we’re in swampy hell. Harry Crews would love it.”—Uncut

Time to Say Goodbye tells the story of a suburban wife and mother with a deadly past and the detective who is determined to find out the truth. When a motel maid in Gainesville, Florida, is brutally murdered, Detective Bullock believes the crime may be linked to three 25-year-old murders. Later, when another woman disappears, Bullock discovers a connection that his superiors don’t want him to pursue. Working on his own time, Bullock follows a lead to a realtor in North Carolina. Another kidnapping takes him back to Florida and into the eye of a hurricane, where he must battle the elements to save lives. Pat MacEnulty’s first mystery, Time to Say Goodbye is a triumphant invasion of the traditionally male world of noir writing.

Pat MacEnulty lives in Charlotte, North Carolina. She is the recipient of an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Florida Arts Council.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Patsy Palmer, a happily married suburban mom and successful Charlotte, N.C., real estate agent, has a secret. A really, really big secret. Over two decades ago, when she was known as Vera Lee Gifford, she was convicted of three murders: the owner of the bar where she worked as an exotic dancer, the owner's bodyguard and the wife of her boyfriend's lawyer. After breaking out of prison, she transforms herself into a solid citizen by taking a new name, graduating from college and eventually marrying good-guy Tom Palmer. When younger sister Fancy Lee decides to find Vera, Patsy's picture-perfect life begins to unravel. An old prison pal of Vera's, Thelma Jackson, has been murdered, and Gainesville, Fla., police detective Rodney Ellis, who years ago arrested the teenaged Vera, is called in to investigate. Patsy fights to keep her early years a secret, but soon the past comes back to bite her, and she's fighting for not only her own life but her young daughter's as well. It's a tangled tale whose twists and turns explain the hows and whys, but lackluster writing, a preponderance of coincidence and a familiar story keep the ending and its revelations from being much of a surprise. More About the Author

I grew up in Florida and now live in Charlotte, North Carolina. My latest
book is TIME TO SAY GOODBYE.

The premise for the book was suggested by my agent because after reading my short story collection (THE LANGUAGE OF SHARKS) he thought I could write well about women who had shady pasts. Even though I am nothing like Patsy Palmer, the "woman with a past" in my book, I used to be a wild thing. I did drugs in the 70s (a lifestyle I wrote about in my first novel SWEET FIRE) and major drinking in the 80s. Now, I'm into meditation, yoga, and healthy living. I have found I cannot function if I don't take extremely good care of myself.

I love to write. My life pretty much centers around it. That and driving my
teenager around. I'm also taking care of my elderly mother (this entails
lots of Scrabble playing). And I edit people's books, coach writers and
teach for a living. It doesn't leave a lot of time for my own writing, but I
keep at it. I've just finished a new novel. It's called FROM MAY TO DECEMBER and is dedicated to my friend Kitty Gretsch, who died of cancer. There is a character who is a lot like Kitty in the novel, though it's difficult to capture the spirit of someone you love in words. Maybe
impossible.

Who are my influences? My friends, mainly, Pamela Ball, Mary Jane Ryals, Ron Wiginton, Michael McClelland. Very good writers, those people. And my
teachers, too. Sheila, Harry, Jerry, Les. My favorite writer is usually
whoever I happen to be reading at the time, but just for kicks, let's say
Jane Austen, Toni Morrison and Harry Crews.

5.0 out of 5 stars I stayed up all night, May 6, 2006

Doug B (Knoxville, TN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Time to Say Goodbye (Paperback)
Time to Say Goodbye is an outstanding gumshoe crime drama. Rodney Ellis would be comfortable in the company of Phillip Marlowe, Spenser, or Travis McGee. There is nothing better than a book that keeps you up all night. This is one of those books that makes your heart race as you get closer and closer to the end. I hope Ms. McEnulty is working on the next adventure for Rodney Ellis. A fantastic read!

5.0 out of 5 stars A meaningful, entertaining read!, June 1, 2008
This review is from: Time to Say Goodbye (Paperback)
It's so very nice to have a good detective story based somewhere else than New York or Washington. The South has its share of sordid characters and lifestyles. MacEnulty has grabbed onto a noir genre solid character that will make a good stories for a long while. There's more to this novel than one time through provides. Her writing has substance that puts her writing in a class by itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the very best books I've ever read, November 24, 2006
This review is from: Time to Say Goodbye (Paperback)
This book is thrilling and moving. The characters are very likable, and the plot hangs together with a very satisfying ending. I sincerely hope Dr. MacEnulty continues in the crime fiction genre, as she excells at it. Dee Lambert
