Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-- Another story about Nathan the elephant and his best friend Nicholas Alexander, a mouse. The first day of school presents a challenge to their friendship because Nathan wants to go all by himself. Nicholas Alexander is reluctant to let him go alone, and manages to follow along to the classroom. After some mix-up, Nicholas Alexander admits he is jealous and fearful of being left out. Their friendship is patched up, and Nathan leaves school having made two new (human) friends and kept the old. As in Delacre's other books, the meaning of the story surfaces gracefully, and whatever lesson there is about relationships and behavior takes second place to a gentle, attractive storytelling. The drawings are animated and amusing, and suit the whimsical story very well. --Anna Biagioni Hart, Sherwood Regional Library, Alexandria, VA
