Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1 Instead of the expected bemoaning of an often-dreaded activity, Cat's friends are amenable and already in the process of getting to bed. Each spread shows her announcing, Time to sleep, which is followed by a character's name. Cat's pals all appear midway through a familiar step in the process. Sheep is reading, Pig is in the tub, Giraffe is brushing her teeth, Crab is getting a glass of water, Horse is on the toilet, and Shark is choosing a stuffed toy. Only Owl is not ready to go to bed, and young readers will delight in letting everyone know why. As the animals drift off, Owl is left on a perch, watching over them. The real magic of this title is in Willems's illustrations. The spread with Cat and Horse in the bathroom has Cat with a pink blush on her cheeks, toes pointed inward with her right foot stacked on top of her left, and her tail is in a knot. The message of embarrassment is simple and clear. On the spread with Shark, piled among the stuffed animals is Pigeon. These are the details that children will relish and will lead them to invest in the characters and in the series. Stacy Dillon, LREI, New York City

From Booklist

A progressively dark and soothing nighttime blue backs up Willems’ cartoon critters in this get-ready-for-bed picture book starring Cat the Cat, with cameos by among others, Pig the Pig, Giraffe the Giraffe, Crab the Crab, etc. Cat tells each of the animals, who are engaged in various nighttime pursuits (reading a book, washing up, brushing teeth, going potty), that it’s time to sleep. A perfectly well-timed joke arrives courtesy of the pop-eyed owl one assumes to be Owl the Owl. He definitely isn’t ready for bed, but his arrival caps off this smiles-all-around, understated tour of pre-bedtime activities. Preschool-Kindergarten. --Ian Chipman

Mo Willems has struck gold again with his newest Cat the Cat book, an easy reader suitable for children to read by themselves or to be read aloud to even toddlers as well as preschoolers. The text in this book is even simpler than in the Elephant and Piggie series, and I can easily imagine preschoolers "reading" this book by themselves, because of the extensive repetition in the text and by using the drawings as visual cues. These feature Mo Willem's cartoon-like very simple illustrations, on a bright blue background, with very large white text. In the story, Cat the Cat goes around telling her various animal friends that it's time for bed. "Time to sleep, Sheep the Sheep! Time to Sleep, Pig the Pig!, etc...until a very funny twist with an owl at the end. Kids will be delighted by seeing Cat the Cat's animal friends go through their bedtime routine, including taking a bath, reading a story, brushing teeth, going on the potty, etc. A true delight....Mo Willems is the Dr. Seuss for the 21st century!

I got this book at a discount store, because my 2-year old loves the Pigeon books, and the illustrations looked really cute. This book rapidly became a night time favorite, with my daughter crying, "Again!" after the book is over. We go through 4-5 readings of this one a night, and we only stop because I just can't read it all night long. If my daughter had her way, I would probably be reading it at her wedding.

The story and language is simple and repetitive, which can be tedious to the adult reader (especially if you are asked to read it over and over), but the cadence and concepts make it a winner for toddlers and developing language. The images are cute, and help the story along by going through a bedtime routine (story, bath, brushing teeth, etc.) that every child will recognize. My daughter goes right to sleep after her readings, which is a big plus.

I would recommend this for kids 0-up. I think it's a wonderful part of the bedtime ritual. The book's repetition, routine, and cheery tone make the idea of going to bed fun, comforting and soothing.

My daughter has never met a Mo Willems book she didn't like. She LOVES Knuffle Bunny, and she likes Cat the Cat because it's easy enough for her to memorize and "read" on her own. Mo is a master of facial expression and little surprises that kids love. I bought this book for my daughter for her 4th birthday, and she is really excited about it. I like that it encourages her to read on her own, even though she is just now beginning to learn her letters. These books give her incentive to learn, because she gets to experience the joy of reading to others and wants to do more.

Great books to read to kids and as they get older and begin reading, they enjoy reading the books to you.
