Book Description

April 15, 2000
This 88 page, full color, hard cover book includes information on the most sought after spa therapies, like Aromatherapy, Swedish massage, Shiatsu, Reflexology, Meditation, Water Therapies and Yoga and includes some much needed information about stress and how it effects the body along with breathing techniques, tips for detoxifying and how to mix your own oils and give your partner a massage he or she will never forget. While it is packed with information that helps the spa-goer understand the physical and mental value of indulging in spa therapies, the underlying message of the book is to use the spa experience as a vehicle for self-discovery. Steiner, the book's author and publisher operates the spas on board cruise ships and also on land, and has been involved in the industry since the 1930's. Sarah Walker, the Editor of 'time to spa' says that this experience has given Steiner a great deal of insight into the needs of the public. "As life becomes more technical, more automated, more scheduled and less spontaneous we all are in desperate need of ways to re-connect." According to Steiner, the spa experience, whether that be in the comfort of your own home in your bath tub, or in one of the many spas that are developing throughout the world, has the power to put the individual back in 'emotional' touch. Filled with beautiful photography, the book makes a wonderful gift for someone else or yourself.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"...This expertly written book clearly makes this lifestyle tangible for those of us who erroneously associate the word "spa" with unabashed luxury. -- Lesley Abravanel, Managing Editor, Porthole Cruise Magazine

From the Author

Sarah Jacob Walker's answer to the question "why are so many people flocking to the spa now?" is quite simple, "because they NEED the experience." It sounds a little simplistic, but how else can you justify the huge growth in spas over the past fifteen years? And the surge is not just a reflection of the quest for feminine youth and sylph like bodies - 25% of the spa goers are men. No, there is a lot more to it - like the growing need for time to reflect, revitalize and renew ones physical and emotional batteries. But still, why now? Sarah explains her point of view, "In the past 150 or so years, life has changed radically. Even our parents didn't live as we live now. However if we go back to just before the industrial revolution, life had maintained its pace for centuries. The industrial revolution, followed by the technological revolution has created life anew. While it is true that technology has bought us wonderful things, there is a loss of touch with the natural world and not so much time to linger and reflect. Time is of the essence today and more often than not, there is not enough. At the same time our lives have become more scheduled and in many ways 'mundane'. Most people get up and can go through their morning's rituals, which includes the drive to work, without even thinking. This loss of time to 'linger' and reflect - the lack of sponteneity caused by an over-scheduled life - will have a negative effect on the quality of life and health. How we use our time is vital and this is key to a fulfilled, happy life. The spa, therefore, is one way of going on an inner journey and reconnecting - of lingering a little. Of course, when I talk about 'spa' I don't just mean 'spa therapies'. I mean lifestyle. 'time to spa' absolutely encourages everyone to account for their time, filling life with joyful activities. Whether it be hiking, cycling, eating, breathing, meditating, bathing - it should be done with well being in mind.

This review is from: Time to Spa (Hardcover)
The concept behind this book is wonderful. Everything you wanted to know about relaxation and de stressing is in this book. However, when you get to the end of this book , you realize that it is put out by a company that sells products. The products are very expensive. The information is very valuable. The quotes are beatifully portrayed and make you realize what a vey fast paced society we live in. I wish everyone realized how important life is. It is so sad that we have to pay for time in our health.
