4.0 out of 5 stars OK single player, great multiplayer
TimeSplitters was a popular game when it came out. It took the normal shooter game and added in changes in environment - you moved through time to persue your enemies. TimeSplitters 2 expands this with better graphics, sound, and multiplay features.

3.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Multi-Player; Mediocre Single Player Game
First of all, if you're expecting an immersive single player game like Goldeneye, forget it. It's just not here. The single player game is fun if you take each level seperately, but it doesn't make much sense when taken as a whole. That's unfortunate, as TS2 has a lot going for it otherwise. Great graphics, a wealth of multiplayer options and the effective use of bots...

4.0 out of 5 stars OK single player, great multiplayer, November 8, 2002
This review is from: Time Splitters 2 (Video Game)
TimeSplitters was a popular game when it came out. It took the normal shooter game and added in changes in environment - you moved through time to persue your enemies. TimeSplitters 2 expands this with better graphics, sound, and multiplay features.

The plot isn't much to get enthusiastic about. An evil enemy race is trying to wipe out humanity, and they have a time portal. They run back through time with crystals and you have to go back into each time period to track down the crystal and do other miscellaneous tasks while you're there.

The graphics are indeed nice, from flaming torches to dreary sewers and polished marble floors. But when you compare them to the likes of Halo or Kingdom Hearts, they're a bit old looking. There aren't shadows. The backgrounds aren't very dynamic. You shoot walls and get tiny holes, unlike the deformable terrain of other current games. The textures seem flat and a bit repetitive.

They did make an attempt to have the sounds match the eras, with lovely chanting during Notre Dame and twanging during the Western era. Even so, you don't feel 'immersed' in the game. Characters don't make noise when they walk. There isn't really any ambient noise.

The weapon choices are fun and time-appropriate. In Chicago of 1932, you've got Tommy Guns. In Notre Dame you're playing with shotguns. So there's always new variety as you go from level to level.

The missions aren't very challenging compared to other games that are out. They are extremely linear and there's rarely any brainpower involved. There's side missions like "blow up file cabinets along the way" or "shoot out whiskey barrels". There's usually a rationale given but it's pretty flimsy.

There are other 'mini-games' that you can play. Do things like fight off the living dead, smash the glass and so on. Try to get the best times to get high rankings.

Where the game really shines is multiplayer. There are HUNDREDS of characters to choose from in multiplay, and tons of ways to play that you unlock as you go. There are the standards like deathmatch as well as more interesting variations. The game is savvy about game hook-ups and LANs to open the game up to as many players as possible for your system.

In addition, TimeSplitters 2 comes with a MAP EDITOR. This is something rarely seen in a console game!! You can choose from a beginner or advanced mode and design your own maps, and then have your friends play through it! Customize the tile set, bot placements, choose weapons, music, you name it. You can create your own full maps and play a new game every day!

A great game if you're into multiplayer or map creation, and a fun shooter if you're not too particular about graphics or sounds.

5.0 out of 5 stars More fun then a barrel of monkeys..., March 4, 2003
This review is from: Time Splitters 2 (Video Game)
I was completely surprised and excited about the amount of replay value this game has to offer. The multiplayer mode is a blast, and by far the strongest asset this game has to offer. The wide range of death modes you can choose from, to the enormous cast of characters, keep you coming back for more. (I personally can't get enough of the assault and capture the flag modes. It's just a blast!) The mapmaker is very straightforward and offers the chance to design your own maps, to a certain extent. I first started the single player mode on easy (which is wonderfully simple) and was excited at the added dimensions of the levels as I moved to normal and then hard modes. And to try and get a gold medal on the challenges and arcade leagues kept me entertained for days! The sheer depth of this game, including single and multiplayer levels, makes it definitely worth your while to buy. Besides, any game that keeps a record of the melons you burst, glass you smash, and how many times you have played as the monkey has got to be worth your while.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great shooter, if that's what you're looking for., October 19, 2002
This review is from: Time Splitters 2 (Video Game)
OK, I'm one of the few people writing a review for this that have actually played Timesplitters 2, so listen up:

Gameplay: (4.5/5)
The gameplay is very good, especially in multiplayer. Tons of modes and options combine to make it the ultimate shooter experience for you and your friends. The single player is good too, featuring levels that range from the Old West to Planet X in the future. There is also a cool co-operative mode. The weapons have just about as big of a range, with guns like a crossbow and plasma autorifle.

Graphics and Sound: (4/5)
The graphics are smooth and well done, consistently running at 60 frames per second, which is pretty fast. The sound is unspectacular, but it's decent enough.

Value: (4.5/5)
I don't know a whole lot about the value, seeing as I've only had the game since yesterday, but I expect it will be good, especially with the Mapmaker. The Mapmaker allows you to create levels for not only multiplayer, but for single-player too! And it's not some shallow feature, only functioning as a little extra. It's actually pretty in-depth. You can choose where the teams start in team scenarios, color and brightness of the lighting, and even add teleports. It's all very cool.

Overall: (4.5/5)
A very good game. Definitely worthy of comparison to GoldenEye and Perfect Dark. If you want the best shooter the Gamecube has to offer, get this.<

4.0 out of 5 stars Time Splitters 2, September 29, 2002
This review is from: Time Splitters 2 (Video Game)
Time Splitters 2 is sure to be a hit. With a Single Player Mission Editor and a Multiplayer Map Creation System, TS2 has an unlimited amount of replay value. The game is produced by the makers of Goldeneye 007 and Perfect Dark, two of the best selling First Person Shooters on the N64 game console. Time Splitters features a one player story mode, along with a two player co-op story mode, which take you trhough 9 different time periods, from Siberia (year 1999) to Planet X (year 2039). Multiplayer is immense, featuring 90 skins and tons of weapons and maps as well as different games to play, including tag, capture the bag, deathmatch, and team arena. Add drone guns and AI bots to the mix and you have one great game. The game also contains a one player challenge mode, in which you must complete tasks as fast as you can before the given time runs out. Eidos Interactive has created a great game that is definitely worth your money. <BR

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Dark 2 is a long way off, play this while you wait, August 30, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Time Splitters 2 (Video Game)
Timesplitters was a great FPS for PS2. It was clearly aimed toward a fulfilling multiplayer experience, since the first player game lacked so severely.

Timesplitters 2 will improve upon its successor in every way. Once again the point of the game is to chase the evil Timesplitters through time and prevent our destruction. The first player game is being made to feel like Goldeneye(the best console one player FPS ever). Even levels are being modeled to look like Goldeneye's(first TS2 level is the dam, as was Goldeneye's). 10 levels that have varied difficulty setting and can be completed in Co-op.

TS2's multiplayer is being modeled after Perfect Dark(the best console FPS multiplayer ever). 120 characters. More than 12 levels and more than 10 modes of play. Statistics are saved to your character as well as awards you recieve(most cowardly, bravest fighter, etc.). More than 30 weapons, and a LEVEL EDITOR!

TS2's editor will allow anything you could imagine, multiplayer or singleplayer mission(...for which you can even set mission goals, # of enemies and their positions, guns you can use, etc.), allowing almost UNLIMITED replay.

I myself played all three console verisons of TS2 at the E3 event, and believe it or not, Gamecube has the tightest graphics and the Gamecube controller actually feels right, unlike other FPSs i know....(Agent Under Fire, Turok). And if it doesn't TS2 has COMPLETELY custimizable controls.

I have anxiously anticipated this title since May's E3 show. I play Perfect Dark every couple days with my friends, and i do believe this will be its succesor. Buy it. I couldn't recomend it more strongly, especially the Gamecube version, for it is the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great First Person Shooter, November 30, 2002
By
This review is from: Time Splitters 2 (Video Game)
Before I begin the actual review, let me give some history of Free Radical, the developer of this game. They created Goldeneye: 007 for the N64, arguably one of the best games ever for the N64. They were also at Rare for most of the work on Perfect Dark but left before it was completed. I mean come on, with a record like that how can you go wrong, I own a Gamecube and I still play Perfect Dark a lot, also Sega Genisis but that doesn't matter. The point is Free Radical creates timeless games.

Ok, now down to the review. This game has a fairly challanging single player, you will breeze throught the first few missions then get caught at Neo Tokyo, as I did. The game has a fast pace that will keep you on your toes, unlike slower games that require more strategy, like Medal Of Honor: Frontline. The game has tons to do though, even though I'm stuck in single player, I still create maps and play in arcade challanges, unlocking new things for multiplyer. The controls take a little getting used to, but I had them down in 20 minutes flat, so there is not too much of a learning curve.

Now the multiplayer. This game has so many options to choose from. Free Radical kept it's Co-Op idea, but in a bit of a dissapointment to me, they got rid of the Counter-Op mode that was in Perfect Dark. But the actual multiplayer you can do anything, choose weapons, bots, levels, and many of the match's rules. It is a game that would have made the people at Rare very proud, it truly lives to the standard set by Perfect Dark and Goldeneye: 007.

In conclusion, this is one of the best games out for any system, I highly recommend getting it no matter which system you own. It has enough to do to keep the disk in your system for months on end, it's just that darn addictive. ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Goldeneye On The Gamecube, February 7, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Time Splitters 2 (Video Game)
The Goldeneye has been the best FPS ever on any system. Maybe not in graphics but gameplay and fun. Now tell me you didn't spend 10 hours a week in multiplayer with Goldeneye. Now with Timesplitters 2 you really will spend time on multiplayer. It is a mixture between Perfect Dark and Goldeneye.

The reason it is like Perfect Dark you can play with a friend on single player.

The reason it is like Goldeneye you have over 100 charecters in multiplayer and the levels are setup the same. The guns are awsome and their is no glitches or slow freezing in big battles in multiplayer or single player. The game is so awsome in every aspect.

The ratings below are from 1 to 5

Gameplay 5.0
You will be hours on this game. Unlocking everything and finding new stuff.

Graphics 5.0
Some people give it a 4.5 but I don't see anything bad with the graphics and I own Resident Evil 0.

Fun 5.0, 5.0, 5.0
You will not get bored of this game.

I reccomend another awsome multiplayer game not as good but 2nd best. James Bond Nightfire.

5.0 out of 5 stars TS2 is better than the James Bond on N64, July 24, 2003
This review is from: Time Splitters 2 (Video Game)
Gameplay 5/5 (Controls are simple and anyone can jump in)
Graphics 5/5 (game looks great and framerate is excellent)
Replay 5/5 (lots of challenges and secrets to unlock)
Music 4/5 (can get repetitive sometimes)

The Gameplay: is great beacause when you shoot people with shotguns the fly back and if they are zombies then there heads get shot off.

The Graphics: are great there is no choppyness of lost frames. Even a 4 player game and everybodys shooting it keeps up. No blood in the game but its better that way keeps the comic feel.

The Replay Value: what can I say, there is so much in the game that it can keep you playing for months, just to unlock all of the levels, characters (over 100), types of games (thief, vampire) literaly plenty to keep you busy.

Music: Good, and usually gives you the feel of the level, but it sometimes sounds like it never changes.

Overall this game is the best F****** Game I have ever played on the gamecube. Take my word for it and dont read any other reviews just buy it.

-NeO

5.0 out of 5 stars True Review, December 19, 2005
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Time Splitters 2 (Video Game)
Now I played the first timesplitters for the Playstation 2 and I thought that was pretty good. But when I played this for the Gamecube i realized how much the first one was missing. Timesplitters 2 (TS2) improves on the first in nearly every aspect of the game. Now in story mode, the mission objectives are more than just "go here, grab this, and then take it here." I can say that I never really payed attention to the actual reasons behind each mission or why it happened. In TS2 its all explained in cut scenes and the purpose of the mission is clear. Each level takes you to a different time and place in history (or the future) these include Chicago during Prohibition, Siberia, the Old West, and others. Two player co-op is here again although like the first the second player isn't really used in the story line. All the story mode missions have 3 difficulties with unlockable content for completion of the harder ones.

Multi player is definately the best part of this game. I bought it because I needed a game to play with my friends that wasn't SSMB. There are tons of different maps to play on as well as a map maker feature so you can create your own. The maps range from the open expanses of the Ice Place (sorry I can't remeber the real name) to the confined bridges of the Chasm. With a full arsenal of weapons at your disposal, you can use the recommended weapons for the map, take a premade category or customize your own list. The same is possible for the bots and up to 10 bots can be used at once. The only complaint I have about the game is the AI, don't get me wrong, I still play against it and all but it would help if it was a little smarter.

What is another great thing is the vast amount of characters you can play as, set as bots, and unlock. You play as anyone from a snow man on a magic carpet, to a gingerbread man, to a duck. All the characters are unlocked either in 1 player arcade league or story mode. You can spend countless hours playing arcade league by yourself and the scenarios that are used are hilarious.

So all in all, TS2 is a great party game or if your bored one day and want to go shot off the heads of a couple dozen zombies. The price is right as well and it' only rated T. If you want some better AI and story mode and your parents let you play M rated games I'd go for Time Splitters Future Perfect. But if you've got 20 bucks lying around and have a couple buddies coming over go pick up TS2, you won't be dissapointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Timesplitters 2,huh?, June 27, 2004
By
lectrix A.K.A the chessmaster (Mattersville, United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Time Splitters 2 (Video Game)
Timesplitters 2 is by far the best 1st person shooter I have ever played. But if your going to bother playing a shooter it might as well be 1st person.

1. STORY 4.5/5
The story mode is extremely difficult. The best part of Timesplitters is that you play in many different eras as oposed to other games where you play one time period only. This allows a sensible escuse to use a variety of weopons. There are ten levels in this game and though that may not sound like much to you but each level may very well take you three weeks to beat.=)

2. MULTIPLAYER 5/5
As oposed to role playing games where you have to follow a pattern when you are playing, Timesplitters allows you complete freedom in multiplayer mode. There are many different kinds of settings your can chose from when playing in case you get tired of conventional deathmatch.

3. UNLOCKABLES 5/5
My favorite aspect of this game is that there are so many freaking things that you can unlock! The are exactly 126 different characters and you start the game about 25. There are also many different maps you can unlock along with comical arcade games.

4. MAPMAKER 4/5
In this game you can create a map that you play on in multiplayer mode. You can also create your very own story mode with this system.

5. CHALLENGE AND ARCADE 4.5/5(but very difficult)
The challenge and arcade leagues are pre-setup mini levels where you use a variety of skills against creative objectives.(such as shooting watermelons off the heads of scampering monkeys without killing them)

6. CHEATS 3/5
There are no cheats in this game that will help you during the story mode only add an extra twist in multiplayer. Such as cardboard characters, rotating heads, and silly hats. There is nothing funnier that seeing a fearsome mutant zombie running around with a spinning head wearing a shef's hat.

7. COMIC RELIEF 4/5
The comic relief is that there are joke characters. My personal favorite is the Gingerbread Man but this game also includes the Monkey,Duckman Drake,Calamari(a squid),Leo Krupps(a lion),and the famous Snowman.

8. THE TWIST 3/5
The twists are mainly powerups which include invisibility, shrink, max damage, and super speed.

Overall this game is incredible. and since the gamecube has only about 7% of the market good games are scarce but let me assure you this is one of them.
