5.0 out of 5 stars GREATEST SURF CD I'VE GOTTEN IN YEARS, October 27, 2005

I took a chance on this CD and boy, I'm glad I did! These songs are not done in the currently hip punk/garage-surf vein. Rather, these gems are delivered in the original Sixties style on authentic Sixties Fender amps and guitars. Very authentic and beautiful "old school" surf. You won't regret getting this one. I play it all the time. A+

Terrific CD. These guys play with feeling. Tremendous website, too. All vintage instruments and amps deliver the authentic sound. Great place to start if you are looking for contemporary surf music. This band is the real deal.

4.0 out of 5 stars classic SoCal surf sounds..., March 27, 2011
This review is from: Time Surfin' (Audio CD)
From southern California, The Breakaways have been around for over a decade. Playing Fender instruments, they perform old school 60's style surf instrumentals, in the tradition of The Ventures, The Challengers, and Dick Dale, but with a more modern production. Time Surfin' (2004) features twenty surf-rock instrumentals, thirteen of which are original compositions by the band, and seven covers of surf rock classics.

While it is nice to hear another tightly executed version of standards like Apache, Out Of Limits, Diamond Head, Baja, Hotdoggin', or Penetration, The Breakaways are most interesting doing their own music, as the guys deliver some really cool tunes, much in the traditional style of the 60's. The best of their faster numbers include North Shore Rumble, Surfin' Sam, Pray For Surf, Storm Surf, Percussionator, and The Curl's Revenge. No Surf, The Crush, Shark's Breath, and Longboard Lesson, are really cool atmospheric mid-tempo tunes. Like The Ventures, they also explore some slower, soft, easy-going, spacey stuff that is kind reminiscent of some of the music on The Ventures In Space (1964), or Surfing (1963) albums. For a better idea, check out the sample audio clips, or look for live performances by the band on YouTube.

The Breakaways were founded by guitarist Craig Skelly, and Time Surfin' features Gus Moratinos on drums, Alan Niizawa on bass, Bruce McCoy on guitar, and Ed Riojas on guitar and keyboards. McCoy played drums with the surf group The Nocturnes, way back in the 60's. Since the release of this album, Moratinos and Riojas have left the group.

The Breakaways' updated brand of traditional surf music, is free of any edgy punk attitude or any costume gimmicks, except perhaps for aloha attire. With a little reverb and distortion, their sound has a little bit of grit, and can get a bit on the dark side at times. The solos are mostly short and to the point. If The Breakaways sound like your thing, you might also appreciate the Mel-Tones, who have a little cleaner sound, and incorporate a little more Dick Dale style flutter picking. Check out their album Surf Sensation for more cool surf rock instrumentals.

5.0 out of 5 stars Forever Timeless, April 12, 2014

I found this band through hearing a couple of songs on surf music station, when I hear some modern examples with an original bonafide vibe, I know I won't be sorry when the reverb is floating out of my speakers. This is a band that went to the old school and you will enjoy every song on this album, each one is created by a class act . There is not any trash here, and none of it sounds corny, it's just timeless modern surf music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Surf Ever!!! Forget The rest!!! But This Now!!!, September 4, 2011
This review is from: Time Surfin' (Audio CD)
This is by far the best surf music I have ever heard in my entire life! period! These guys have a few Cd's out now, and they are all Great! I think this one is my favorite out of them, it is a hard call, they are all Great! If I had to have only one surf CD, this would be it! The perfect purity of this album is, well, perfect in all ways, these guys know what they are doing! I just wish they went on tour! This type music is seldom heard out here in the Buffalo, NY area, which is a shame! I would love to see them perform! You can e mail them at their site and they will write back! You owe this one to your self, even if you don't think surf is your cup of tea, BUY IT! you will not regret it! THESE GUYS CARRY THE SURF TORCH, Shame on you for not already having this CD. With all respect for Dick Dale, The Ventures, The Electromaniac's, and all the rest, These guy's are the reigning BEST!
