Book Description

Lonely Planet October 2001

Tuvalu is a Pacific nation of low lying coral atolls and islands whose existence is threatened by climate change and rising sea levels. This large format, softcover, full-colour photographic essay will show the world what will surely be lost as sea levels rise: a unique culture and environment irrevocably erased. This moody and evocative portrait of the tiny island nation is a foray into previously undocumented territory – it is the kind of venture Lonely Planet has pioneered. Photographed by Peter Bennetts with text and interviews by Tony Wheeler, Time & Tide is a serenely beautiful and poignant story of our times.

  • more than 120 beautiful photographs
  • eleven individual profiles of Tuvaluan people from all walks of life
  • extensive coverage of the history, people, culture and daily life of the nine atolls that make up the nation of Tuvalu

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

More than a portrait of a nation in crisis or a cultural document, this book articulates the flourishing optimism of a people.

About the Author

It was Tuvalu's altitude - or rather its distinct lack of altitude - which first brought internationally-acclaimed photographer Peter Bennetts to this scattering of islands. Bennetts has a keen interest in environmental issues and there is no doubt that Tuvalu is on the climate-change front line. His regular visits to Tuvalu led to contact with Prime Minister Ionatana Ionatana. Together they came up with the idea of producing a book about Tuvalu, something which could help to focus attention both on the island nation's story and its troubling challenges.

4.0 out of 5 stars simple review, March 3, 2002
This review is from: Time & Tide: The Islands of Tuvalu (Paperback)
Mr Bennetts and Mr Wheeler chronicle the unique world of island life with a gentle touch of objectivity whilst acknowledging the charm of 'place' and the potential of subjective reaction by a reader. This book is a beautiful reminder that there are places other than your workstation -bigger skies than the ceiling grid and underfoot textures more surreal than nylon carpet. ENJOY!

This review is from: Time & Tide: The Islands of Tuvalu (Paperback)
I have always been fascinated by faraway & isolated countries like Tuvalu, I have travelled a lot and i have been to the Pacific in two occasions and it is the area in the world that i like the most and this book definitely makes me enter the everyday life of this tiny in land size but beautiful country. Photos are simple & beautiful and the book is not only aimed at global warming problems. as i said most of the photos in the book are about the people and life of tuvaluans. the only thing i didn't like in the book is that the explanation of photos is at the end of the book so if you want to know where a photo has been taken or what it is about you have to go at the end of the book and check. Other than that very nice book!!!
