Visiter by San Francisco band The Dodos is their second full length and first for Frenchkiss. Originally formed in 2006 under the moniker Dodobird as a one man acoustic act, Meric Long would gig around SF playing folky guitar w/ a combination of loops and ambient keyboards. Having already studied West African Ewe drumming, Meric got turned onto country blues fingerpicking and sought to create ... Read more in Amazon's The Dodos Store

Editorial Reviews

2009 release by the Indie Rock duo. With a title like Time To Die, you might think the Dodos' third disc is their 'maturealbum,' a serious undertaking punctuated with string sections and synths. While Indie Rock's go-to guy, Phil Ek (Built To Spill, Fleet Foxes, The Shins), hopped behind the boards this time, the Dodos' style is still centered around two key elements: the punchy percussion of Logan Kroeber and the Fahey infused finger-picking of front man Meric Long.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you! July 28, 2009
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
The daily deals at Amazon are a terrific way to expand your musical horizons, people! Part of the point of them is to expand the fan base of some of the lesser known bands and genres. If you don't like this type of music, ok, but don't complain that the deals aren't what you want. I know that I, for one, get a bit irritated when there are too many mainstream offerings...I never buy them because if I wanted to listen to that sort of thing, all I have to do is turn on the radio and it is repeated constantly anyway.

As another reviewer said, stop complaining because you want more Nickelback.

Ok, as for the actual album, I like! Poppy, but not electronically so. Definitely worth the reduced price, and I'm now interested in their other stuff. I'm a huge fan of DCFC, Stars, Blitzen Trapper, Iron & Wine, Bell X1...get the idea? No, this isn't completely the same as any of those, but it fits well with the other things I like, if that helps.

So, have a listen. Expand your horizons!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another solid release from the Dodos July 28, 2009
Format:MP3 Music
I've only listened through once so far, but it's already a solid album (I felt compelled to review quickly due to the slew of negative comments that popped up here very quickly). The Dodos have a very unique style -- and this definitely sounds like a lot of their work to date. But this album showcases a solid step in new directions as they experiment with many new sonic ideas without betraying their styles that both define them and have brought them their ever-growing success.

I have listened to their album "Visiter" a ton, and I love it, although it did take a few listens to really grab me. "Beware of the Maniacs" is a recent addition to my music library, but is quickly racking up plays. "Time to Die" looks to do the same. If you have liked the Dodos in the past, or have been at all curious about them, give this album a shot. Like other Dodos music it may not blow you away immediately, but give it some time to ferment in your system. They are a very good band.

Also, if you get the chance to see them live, do it. They put on an excellent show.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing July 28, 2009
Format:MP3 Music
I have to admit I have only listened to Time To Die once but I enjoy the music. It might end up as a 4* for me but I felt like I needed to chime in as a balance for the negative reviews. I applaud Amazon for some variety in their daily deals. The sample snipets from the songs don't do the Dodos justice. I hope people will listen to the songs in their entirety before jumping to conclusions. The syncopated rhythms might not be very conducive to a quick 15 second sample but these songs are wonderful. I look forward to exploring and digging deeper with Time To Die and perhaps looking into more of the Dodos' catalog.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great artists and Amazing performers July 28, 2009
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
If you haven't listened to the Dodos, really listened, then you really should! There are some amazing guitar and drums here.

*Also, please don't complain and rate poorly simply because your favorite album wasn't picked today.

5.0 out of 5 stars A solid follow-up to Visiter July 28, 2009
By M. Koch
Format:MP3 Music
After listening to the fantastic songwriting and extraordinary musical skills of Meric Long and Logan Kroeber on Visiter, it was definitely going to be tough to release another album that could live up to that standard. I'm really enjoying this new set of tunes. The production is a bit more slick, but not detrimental to the songs. If you like folky indie-ish pop-rock... oh I don't know... it's good. I'd pay full price for this release. The fact that it's the Deal of the Day is just icing on the cake. Give it a listen and I hope you enjoy it. And if you do, pony up the dough to get a copy of Visiter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review the album not the Daily Deal July 28, 2009
Format:MP3 Music
People are giving albums a bad rep because they are not the ones that they want. That is not a reflection on the actual music. If you would have never found this band but for the daily deal and you think it is rubbish then move on. If not, enjoy some nice music.
This album seems to be comprised of a good balance of mellow, poppy and melodic pieces that should make for a good listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars 1-2-3 Dodos September 24, 2009
Format:Audio CD
While there are a lot of people that seem to hate the new Dodos album because it's not as immediately frantic as Visitor, these people are not allowing themselves to warm up to the album. Where the previous two albums had some duds amongst masterpieces like Men, The Bell, Walking, Fools, Jodi and Ashley, Time to Die is a dud-free zone. Not only that, the last track, A Time to Die, is, actually, equally frantic in it's own way when it kicks in around the 2:30 mark. And it leads up to that mark with some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard. It's perfect--as is the complete 1-2-3 punch of the last three songs: Troll Nacht, Acorn Factory, and Time to Die.

Not since the first time I heard Tomorrow Never Knows has the last track on an album been the one that would clearly stick with me for life.

3.0 out of 5 stars Should be 3.5 July 29, 2009
By Joseph
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Frankly I think this is a great little album only I can't tell the songs apart after several listens. The harmonies, melodies, and textures are great only not that distinctive from one another. I do put it on however and enjoy it through out.
