MGMT's debut single, "Time To Pretend," starts off a little freaky-deaky, but the opening salvo ("I'm feeling rough, I'm feeling raw, I'm in the prime of my life") gets things kicking in the right direction. The song freshly skewers the rock-star tropes of overnight success, drugs, models, more drugs, regret, and yes, untimely death. The wall-of-distortion background reminds me a little of the Cure and a lot of Curve (or most any noise-pop band, really).

Who wouldn't like a song about becoming famous, dating lots of models and dying young? That's the rock in roll dream, right? I found this song on Pandora and liked it enough to pay a buck. I guess this would be described as "indie" with some new wave synths added in. The whole song has an atmospheric echo to it with a strong keyboard riff throughout. It's quite catchy.

I must admit I prefer MGMT's clearer 2005 version of this song, but this version is brilliant, rocking, and hook-driven as well. This has got to be one of the all-time best songs of rock and roll excess.
