Book Description

The Time Travel Adventures Of The 1800 Club is a 21st Century haven for people seeking to escape New York City’s frantic pace. Dressed in clothes their ancestors might have worn during the 1800s, members enjoy foods of the period and read periodicals featuring news of a particular date in 1865. However, the 1800 Club also has an astounding secret . . . Time Travel. Members travel back in time nudging famous persons and key events just enough to ensure history unfolds, as it should. Guardians-of-the-future, who send robotic probes back through the ages, discover that, at critical time-junctures, pivotal figures stray from vital tasks and actions. Then an 1800 Club member is sent back to guarantee that events get back on track. The 1800 Club’s members aid Lincoln, Roosevelt, Bat Masterson, Mark Twain and many others. Without subtle interventions by these unknown agents, the famous might have been only footnotes,
rather than giants of history

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved It! July 10, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I, like another reviewer, got this first of seven books free for my Kindle, and HAD to (with pleasure) purchase the other six as I wanted more! Time travel fiction is decidedly my favorite genre and this did not disappoint. The premise was agreeable and not too far-fetched, and I found the characters to be rich and remarkable enough to not confuse them with other characters in the book.

The necessity for time travel in these stories involves "fixing" historical events that somehow got off course resulting in the possibility of a ripple that would negatively impact the future. Various members of the 1800 Club, a club where most think they're play acting as persons in the 1800 time period in U.S. history, graduate to the status of traveling back in time to participate in the mission to steer history back on course. There are some interesting shall we call them side effects that result that make the stories all that more captivating. There are connections with persons in the future who initially identify the historical glitches, who then enlist members from the 1800 Club in the 21st Century to go on to perform the missions.

There are seven books so far, with two two-missions per book, a format that I have found very agreeable. I look forward to more installments to come!

2.0 out of 5 stars Compelling idea, not well-written February 23, 2013
By Andy S
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Great story line, especially for a serial like this. Mr McAuley is clearly onto an idea that would have won my purchasing decision if it weren't for the quality of editing and writing. Characters are uncomplicated and earnest (give me some conflict!), historical events are reasonably well depicted, and the technical aspects of time travel are shaky (you future boys can't breathe our air? really?) But I just can't get beyond the stilted dialog and too-neatly tied situations. I suppose that's needed for a serial, but I'd really like some twists and danger and complex characters.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing November 24, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A great premise, especially for fans of time travel. The writing was extremely simplistic and the characters rather dull and flat. I endured the book and skimmed to the end in the hope that it would improve, but was just disappointed.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed October 21, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Plenty of people have done better reviews of this than I could so I will keep this brief. I love anything to do with time travel (books, movies etc) but this was a stretch even for me. Generally others have an element of plausibility to their story but this was just too implausible. It struck me as the type of book I would have loved when I was 12 or 13. Yes, I read the whole lot of it as opposed to giving up so that was a plus for it. No, I have no desire to read more so that was a negative.

1.0 out of 5 stars slow and predictable July 31, 2013
By Tammy
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I love time travel books with an air of mystery surrounding them . where the characters are caught in an impossible situation and the characters use whit, cunning and some good old luck to get out of their troubles. This book had none of that. I felt like I was back in history class playing 'what if' games. The characters had no self reliance, they were always led into the travel situation and knew from history how to fix what was going aerie.
There was no bonding with any of the characters and after thoroughly reading the first 40% of the book, I was ready to skip through the rest to see if there is any possibility this gets better. Characters, connections and a hope there was a point to Bill jumping time... Nothing. No characters had solid bonds, no earth shattering developments at all. I did not finish the book. I think this is the first book I haven't completed in years. In fact I will be deleting it from my library so I don't make the mistake of trying to read it again.

2.0 out of 5 stars Cheesy July 13, 2013
By David
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Time travel stories can be so witty and entertaining - but not this franchise. The stories are SO simplistic. Even with time travel, there needs to be a realism to the overall tale, and this just doesn't have it. I mean, if you think that anybody six foot three can travel back, paste on a beard, and pass for Lincoln delivering his Gettysburg Address - and get away with it - then I guess this is your story. Dialogue is painful to read. It's too bad, because the overall premise is quite clever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great series! May 23, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
After reading the first book in the series, I bought the other six. What a great series! Well written and in the parts of the book set in the past, the descriptions really make me feel as if I were really there. I usually have a hard time suspending my disbelief but was easily able to get into the premise. I hope the author is writing more books - I'm looking forward to reading them!

2.0 out of 5 stars disappointed June 26, 2012
By just me
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The idea was a good one but the writing was simplistic. I wish there was more historical accuracy. For example, Lincoln did not just get off the train and give his speech. Details were vague. I love reading historical facts and fiction and frankly, couldn't stomach finishing this. I did read an excellent book in this genre, Time Travel Heiress. That book put the reader in the historical time. This one missed the mark in My opinion

The U.S. Navy SEALs are a fine bunch of special operations warriors. I guess that's why they seem to be featured as the hero/protagonist in so many books and movies. Read more

I wouldn't say this is accurate enough to be real, as much as the author would like readers to believe that. Still a fun read and it went pretty fast. Read more
