4.0 out of 5 stars This not a horrible book!
I recently read the scathing review of this book posted in February. I think from an adult perspective one can see the cliches and flaws, but this is meant for a twelve year old and older. I honestly enjoyed the storyline and yes, it would have been great if they delved deeper into the characters, plot, etc. but again this is a young adult novel. I liked the premise, the...

1.0 out of 5 stars What a Waste of Paper
This book was so poorly written, I cannot believe it was published. I didn't even want to give it a star! The story line was disjointed and completely unrealistic - and that had nothing to do with the premise of time travel. Why do so many authors think that just because they write young adult fiction, it doesn't have to be quality literature? Because that is what...

This review is from: The Time Travelers: Volume One (Mass Market Paperback)
I recently read the scathing review of this book posted in February. I think from an adult perspective one can see the cliches and flaws, but this is meant for a twelve year old and older. I honestly enjoyed the storyline and yes, it would have been great if they delved deeper into the characters, plot, etc. but again this is a young adult novel. I liked the premise, the speaking style, and most of all I was a fan when the first book came out in 1995. I was enamored with the story at the time and am very excited to read all of the books in their succession. I had to wait years for the story to continue! So, for those fans of time travel, young adult fiction, and love/romance stories will enjoy this. I can guarantee it.

5.0 out of 5 stars great for ya readers, March 11, 2008
This review is from: The Time Travelers: Volume One (Mass Market Paperback)
i have to agree with cool chick from michigan. i picked up the first book when i was 11. i fell in love with the story. it was appropriate for my age and i found it exciting. when i found out there were more books to add to the story i ordered them all. i was 15. i've continued to read these books since. at that young age it doesn't always take much to pull you into the story. i found that annie and strats love was romantic and sweet. i would recommend this book to any young girl that is curious about romance. great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book!, November 25, 2007

I really loved this book. I love reading about time travel, and I love the 1900's, so this book had it all for me. I also liked how you could see the way women were treated in the 1900's, and how easily it was for parents to do have total control of their kids behavior, or the kids might not get to eat that day. It is very different today. The second book was just as good as the first, although a little sadder. After reading this book, I immediately ordered Volume 2 of this series (and it is really good too.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!, November 10, 2007

This entire series is wonderful. I read it many years ago and I'm looking forward to reading it again. These books are written for young adults (probably 12-15). They are easy to read and understand. The story line is excellent. As a person who cries all the time, this series made me do so on several occasions. They are nice, easy read books that take you away from your everyday world into another amazing world. Highly recommended to anyone!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful YA read, December 30, 2010
This review is from: The Time Travelers: Volume One (Mass Market Paperback)
The negative reviews about this book truly bother me. This book is not intended for an adult audience, but that does not mean that it is poorly written. Caroline B. Cooney is a prolific children's writer, not a writer for adult fiction. It takes a certain craft to write children's books, and I feel that people who are far removed from children's literature often do not appreciate the craft that goes into writing books that may seem so simple. She creates stories that are meaningful for younger audiences, even if they seem someone shallow to someone who has had thirty years of reading behind their belts. I will never, ever forget the way this book made me feel the first time I picked it up in fifth grade. This is the book that made me a lifetime reader. I remember reading "Both Sides of Time" over and over again, and when I found out that there were more books in the series, I was so excited. These books made me love books all over again. I am now 23, and I have to admit that they do not hold the same power over me as they once did. This is only because I am older. For twelve year old girls, this book is amazing. This book is a great young adult novel. It speaks to children on their level, without making obscure references that they can never understand. I love this book, even today, and I think it is a wonderful read for any middle-school girl.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Twist on Historical Fiction, September 1, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Time Travelers: Volume One (Mass Market Paperback)
I'd read these books when I was in the 6th grade, and I absolutely loved them. Earlier this year I decided to buy a lot of the old books that I'd liked as a kid, and "The Time Travelers" were some of the first on my list.

The thing that I like the most about this book is that it's historical fiction, but with a twist. It's fascinating how Annie Lockwood travels back 100 years and gets to experience what life was truly like back then. I also enjoy the ties between Strat's time and her own.

The books are very easy to read, but they're not shallow in any way. Caroline B. Cooney does an amazing job of creating mystery, suspense, romance, and many other emotions at once. I would highly recommend this to young teenage to adult women.

1.0 out of 5 stars What a Waste of Paper, February 2, 2007

S. Barnes "siouxsie" (San Jose, California) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Time Travelers: Volume One (Mass Market Paperback)
This book was so poorly written, I cannot believe it was published. I didn't even want to give it a star! The story line was disjointed and completely unrealistic - and that had nothing to do with the premise of time travel. Why do so many authors think that just because they write young adult fiction, it doesn't have to be quality literature? Because that is what Cooney clearly must have thought to produce such empty characters, dialog and story lines. Her characters were never developed. They were simply vapid shells of people. The "great love" that is supposed to drive all of the events is never justified. How do you explain a love that is supposed to be "true" based solely upon glancing at each other and then simply knowing that they loved each other? There was no chemistry written to justify this. Her characters were never true to a single voice. They fluctuated between being strong and then weak. Smart and then stupid. Brave and then powerless. Confident and then weepy. I would say that they spoke words and acted out of character all of the time, except that (as I said before) their characters were never really developed. The ending was improbable and just seemed like she had to end the story, so she just ended it with the main character simply stating "it's going to be fine". So foolish and so unrealistic. This book is comparable to the "Series of Unfortunate Events" rather than the quality and excellent writing of "Harry Potter" or the "Chronicles of Narnia". Don't waste your time, money or effort on this one. Trust me. If I didn't have a compulsion to finish every book I start, I wouldn't have lasted fifty pages!!!
