I stumbled across this album just browsing. I am glad I did.
The first three tracks seem to be studio stuff and are quite good.
I think the album really takes off starting with the 4th track, "And She Cried"; from there to the end, "Take The Time", it is a live performance without break.
I usually do not like recordings of live performance, preferring fine tuned studio stuff, but the energy and ease of this band is incredible.
If you like the smooth sounds of roots rock, this is a must have.
It is truely "TIME WELL WASTED".

It's been a long time for fans of FJB since we've seen an album of new material. With Time Well Wasted, we're given three new songs and ten concert recordings of their standards. Given that FJB is a jam band, best seen live, this shouldn't be much of a surprise.

The first three tracks--Home Thing, Contender, and Empty Room, are welcome additions to the FJB catalog. Multiple guitars, good harmonies, uplifting lyrics. Anyone who enjoyed Lucid, North Avenue Wakeup, or Waiting for the Night will feel at home and enjoy hearing something new.

The concert recordings on Time Well Wasted don't have much going for them. There are better recordings of most of those songs on Mile High Live or the Freddy Jones Band. In particular "And She Cried" comes off flat compared to the previous version. While it's always good to hear another rendition of "In a Daydream", this version lacks the energy of the live shows or even other previous live versions available on CD.

Old fans of FJB will want to pick up the disk to have them in their collection. The studio tracks will fit in fine and maybe the live tracks will find a place, depending on the listener. New fans, who might've heard "In a Daydream" on the radio and are looking for the right disk--you won't find the studio version here. "Waiting for the Night" has the version that is usually played on the radio, although the acoustic and live versions on "Freddy Jones Band" are great.

Even better, catch them live if you can.

This disk leads off with two new songs and then is pretty much reruns old material. There are probably fans who will buy it to get the two new tracks but IMHO they aren't good enough to warrant the purchase. Pass unless you are a rabid fan and have everything else.

I'm a huge FJB fan going way back. I've seen them a live a few times and those shows were great. However, this new release is disappointing on the whole. The new tracks are good but feel like retreads. The live tracks lack energy compared to their other live track releases. Usually bands tend to play their tunes a little faster live. With the FJB, they do the opposite here and actually play them slower. Laid back is fine and dandy to a point, but every track? Especially for tunes that are supposed to be energetic like Waitress? I'll probably "re-master" these for myself and crank the tempo up a bit.
