Time Capsule,

This album of original piano solos is avant-garde, but neither harsh nor jarring. As its title implies, you can hear snatches of all the major east-coast jazz pianists and the time periods in which they played in nearly every song, but Gayle fuses them with a nimble fluidity all his own; a fine accomplishment for any pianist, let alone one whose primary instrument is the tenor saxophone.

Charles Gayle, who is well known in free jazz circles around the world as a saxophonist, should also be reckoned with as a pianist. This great record proves that he is able to adopt virtually all kinds of historic jazz piano styles into his own mode of expression. The music is haunting and beautiful, and lingers in the listener's mind for a long time after the cd is finished. I'd love to catch Gayle the pianist in concert.

Good to add for jazz collection. Improvise is what jazz is all about. This CD is consistent in that regard.
