This review is from: Timeless Art Pepper (Audio CD)
These tracks are from early in Pepper's career, when he was in his 20's. He already was establishing himself on the Jazz scene, coming in second to Charlie Parker in the Down Beat annual poll at this time. Some of the tracks are from Pepper's first sessions as a leader. There are quite a few numbers here which are Pepper originals, and based on them I would have to say he was a very good writer. The other tracks match Pepper with a tenor sax player, and these tracks throw off real sparks. Even though Pepper was an instantly recognizable soloist, he blends beautifully with other musicians and offers plenty of ideas for give and take. And his sound is full and gorgeous; you almost could cut it with a knife. The 1952-3 sound engineering is clear and focused--you can hear everything. This CD definitely should convert neophites into Art Pepper fans.
