It's a unexpected album for those that know Eric Martin (Lead singer for Mr. Big). Once you get past over the fact that this is not a rock album you will accept this timeless work from a great vocalist. It's an album that covers famous pop ballads in the past three decades. Some of the tracks that are a bit out of place are like "White Christmas" and John Lennon's Happy Xmas (War Is Over), but then again I do not know the thinking behind the Japanese Sony record label. When you listen to these songs sung by Eric Martin you will also come to the realization of why Eric Martin is still popular, and has outlasted alot of other rock singers. The reason is simple. He is a great underrated singer that is able to do Hard Rock and can switch to pop ballads. Not to mention that most of the pop songs that are in "Timeless" were sung by women with great voices such as Toni Braxton, Cindy Lauper, Celine Dion, and Christina Aguilera. If someone would hear this album without the knowledge that Eric Martin is a rock singer they would come to the assumption that this man has always sang pop. The are a few rock singers that can cross over like this man. One that comes to mind is Dennis DeYoung, or Glenn Hughes. It's not like Ozzy or Eddie Veder are not coming out with a tribute album to Whitney Houton. Eric Martin reminds me of Michael Bolton. I am not refering to style or image, but rather the diversity of Michael Bolton. Michael Bolton is a man that can sing rock, but then modified his career to sing soul, pop, classical, and Sinatra standards. That talent belongs to a few singers and Eric Martin is those elite class and has this "Timeless" to prove it. Can you imagine Axel Rose with a album called "Timeless" with an album picture of his face embracing an old school microphone singing songs like Mariah Carey's songs "Hero"? Are you laughing? Then I made my point.

From Mr. Big to Mr. Ballad!,

We've always known that Eric Martin could sing a great ballad judging from Mr Big songs such as "To Be With You" and "Going Where The Wind Blows" but here he takes on a whole album of hits and puts his unique voice on display. The song choices are generally good and the performances and production all round are solid. Eric's voice is as smooth and sultry as ever and he puts his stamp onto each lyric - which is the aim when doing an album of covers. Timeless is a nice album when you're in the mood for something relaxing and is a quality addition to Eric Martin's catalogue of solo albums. A few people I've shown it to have even shead a little tear which I think is a good sign.

As the lead vocalist of Mr. Big, Eric Martin has proven himself as one of the best rock singers around. Here he has polished up his pipes and sweetened the mix by covering songs originally performed by various female artists. You will probably recognize his voice from songs such as "Just Take my Heart" and "To Be With You", but you may not have realized what a remarkable range of talent he possesses. He sings the songs on this album sincerely and soulfully with his sweet and boyish style. There are a couple of Christmas songs on this CD which I enjoy but if you don't want holiday songs just choose from one of his Mr. Vocalist CD's or anything else from the Eric Martin Band, which are all original songs, and of course don't forget Mr. Big. Eric Martin has a voice that should be heard, loud and clear.
