This review is from: Timeless Erroll Garner (Audio CD)
This is a truly wonderful album. It captures Erroll Garner in his 20's, at the start of his career. What is wonderful to hear is that, even on the tracks recorded when he was 24, he already was a fully mature artist. On all the tracks, Garner is backed by a bass and drums. The recorded sound on the 1949 tracks is very good, while the 1945 tracks, from 78's, are just a little more congested. As a stylist, Garner here plays with suppleness and a strong feel for melody. All of the tracks time out to about three minutes, the length of a popular song, but there is so much more than that going on here. Garner would seem to have been a natural romantic, always seeking out songs that establish mood and emotion. No consideration has to be given to the earliness of these tracks; this is yet another fully satisfying Erroll Garner release.
