This is a book for anyone interested in improving their painting skills. There are a thousand books on art technique out there, but this one is a gem. Whatever your skill level, if your interest is traditional, representational painting, there is something to be learned here. I've been painting seriously for ten years, and I've never seen the basics so clearly explained. We all need to bust ourselves back down to fundamentals from time to time, and this book does it in a way that is a true pleasure.

Have read many art books over many years and found this to be one of the best dialogues on values I ever read. Color harmony, placement and conceptual input very useful to experienced artist. Artists works are lively with color and represent a skilled painter of people and places.

This one goes right up there with the Andrew Loomis books and Richard Schmid's Alla Prima. It contains lots of hard-won wisdom about the foundations of visual art, oil painting techniques, and the sections on color palette is especially insightful.

Tom Browning, in his book Timeless Techniques for Better oil painting, explains his straightforward and basic approach to oil painting. He explains his working process in a very logical and understanding manner. With no frills or ego Mr. Browning teaches the basics of representational painting and how to put a painting together from start to finish. I have been painting for over 20 years and still recommend this book to all of my students as the one to start with to really understand how to see as an artist sees. It's a must in every painter's library.

Got this book for the library. When I showed a friend who has been painting for years, she feel absolutely in love with the book. The price was amazing and she couldn't be more pleased with the book. Many time we get stuck in painting styles. Books like this become helpful when we get to a point where our work begins to lack character.

I have noticed that many painting books get high marks (4 or 5 stars) from the reviewers. Maybe that is because painting books are all indeed that good....or perhaps it is because we are simply awe of people who can not only paint, but also find good ways to explain it to others.

There are miles of painting books, but this one stands out for a variety of reasons. Number one is that this man can paint like an absolute dream. His figure paintings remind me of the great John Singer Sargent. We get inspiring "modern master" examples right along-side Browning's succinct, informative instruction. (The reproduction quality in the book is great).

Browning never talks down to you...he writes as if he has great confidence that you will get this and he includes all manner of very sophisticated nuance-y type stuff that painters need to learn. People want to learn "on their own", but that nuance-y stuff is next to impossible to understand unless someone generously wants to share it. (I'm thinking of some great side-by-side right and wrong examples that he included, especially about reflected light).

I could go on and on. I am surprised that people can get this book at such a good price. Apparently it is currently out of print, and traditionally that makes the price of an art book just soar. If you want a dynamite representational instructional art book...do not hesitate to get this one.

I have read many books on Oil painting over the last twenty five years.
In My view this one of the best art instruction books I have read.
Tom Browning is the artist. He communicates the fundamentals of painting including, tone, color, edges, composition, and brushwork.

Tom gives you some great ideas for developing as an artist like fast oil paintings done with a timer and sketching with the paint brush.
Tom uses a painterly approach in his work and the paintings in this book are flooded with light, he explains the limited palette and the benefits of experimenting with it.
I've owned this book for over ten years and have taken it on many painting trips as a source of reference and to keep me inspired for the next day's painting.
