5.0 out of 5 stars a voice of spirit returns..., December 3, 2000

It has been almost 3 years now since I discovered that Terry Callier had returned. I couldn't believe it -- it had been years since I had thought about the profound music he had once made. I heard him at the Quiet Knight in Chicago in 1978 or so, a few years before the demise of both the club and his career, singing songs like "Ordinary Joe" and "Occasional Rain," which I never forgot, despite never owning the recordings [until recently, that is!].

TIMEPEACE is a nearly unbelievable comeback. Thanks, U.K. fans! The album covers all of Callier's moods and styles, which range from fairly conventional pop love songs ("C'est La Vie," "Coyote Moon,") to sublimely mystical songs like noone else ("Lazarus Man," "No More Blues," "TimePeace"). There are a couple of songs aimed at African-American youth with worthy messages but less than compelling music ("Ride Suite Ride," "Traitor to the Race").

But the core of this album is a message of pure love from a man who has adopted the name Tahleel Terry Callier and the Islamic faith. The highlights, for me, are "Lazarus Man," "Keep Your Heart Right," and the entire end of the album: "People Get Ready/Brotherly Love," "Love Theme from Spartacus," "No More Blues," and "TimePeace." This portion of the album is one of the most moving pieces of music I have ever heard.

Callier's style is a seamless blend of folk, blues, and jazz. It is truly an inspiring event to have the music of Terry Callier heard again. What he has to say could not be more important, and his talent is a profoundly beautiful vessel for that message...

Terry Callier-Time Peace

What a great album. I first heard TC on a promo sampler and thought that John Martyn had released a new album.Callier comes from another time in a way, the time of peace and love, brotherhood. His tunes are full of soul and that quiet spirituality that kind of goes straight for the heart. Mind you from all indications he is not a new kid on the block. In fact he has been recording since 1965 and throughout the seventies recorded a string of albums on Cadet and Elektra. By the early eighties Callier had dropped out to raise his daughter and take up a course in computers. So the story would have ended except for a couple of London dj's who picked up on some of his earlier recordings and realised the potential and sheer beauty in this man's songs. They somehow managed to get in contact with him and persuaded him to go to London and do a couple of one off shows, which funnily enough were sell outs. This was enough motivation for Callier to make some sort of come back. And we're all the better for it. With his rich baritone voice, soulful tunes and intelligent, insightful lyrics Callier has brought out possibly one of the finest releases in the last five years. The best tune is the Love Theme from Spartacus, as it is just Callier and his guitar. I noticed that this has now been remixed and as such the remix does not do much for me itself.

Other stand out tracks are Keep Your Heart Right, No More Blues and Lazarus Man, which I assume is autobiographical. Callier sings about a man twelve years in exile who comes back to join the land of the living. Actually, all the tracks are wonderful. Don't hesitate.

Get it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Generosity of Spirit, September 13, 2002

Try as you might, you can't always escape the inane presence of Britney et al. But there is an antidote to be had. Slip this CD in the player and discover everything that's missing from what passes for popular music today. Hint: it has something to do with depth, wisdom, spirituality, musicality, and generosity of spirit. Indeed, listening to Terry Callier is a healing experience.

Callier creates a unique soul music, combining his own acoustic guitar and pliant vocals with more traditional jazz-based instrumentation. My favorite cut is Java Sparrow, an extended metaphor about the spiritual nature of human life, and the yearning for freedom from this material world. The final track features the tortured yet joyous cry of Pharoah Sanders' tenor sax, playing off another searching Callier vocal. TimePeace is the sound of an artist who ponders the highest aspects of life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublimely beautiful - music to heal the soul, April 18, 2004

I was lucky enough to find a copy of this CD recently, and I agree with every word of Mitch Bogan's comment - it is sublimely beautiful, soaring, spiritual, uplifting and healing music. It is a crying shame to see this exceptional CD out of print. I can't understand why Terry Callier isn't a household name on both sides of the Atlantic - with the voice and heart of an angel, he certainly deserves to be. If you like folk, jazz, soul - or any kind of beautiful music! - then I implore you to track down a copy of this CD, and spread the word. "In brightest day or darkest night / Don't give up the faith / Keep your heart right... Keep your heart right."

I like Terry Callier and share other fans' bewilderment that I had to discover his work at a CD store in France (Rhapsodie in St. Tropez--fabulous CD store), but this CD blew me away. I keep replaying the ballad "Lazarus Man." What a compelling song, powerful rich smoky vocals by Terry himself, excellent musicality, emotional arrangements and extraordinary lyrics. Really good music. The whole CD is rich and full of discovery. This guy should be way more famous than he is. Everyone I play his music for loves it. If you like rich jazz vocals with evocative lyrics, try any of Terry Callier's CDs. He crosses categories, but from a jazz vocal perspective he is a mighty fine listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terry Callier has made a CD for the ages., January 8, 1999
By A Customer

Terry Callier, a Chicagoan and a world class talent, has put together some impressive music here in both form and content. Callier reminds me of the socially conscious work of Doug and Jean Carn from the early 1970's. There is folk, blues, latin, and even a very relevant rap! There is a spiritual link that connects all of the cuts with the listeners. "Lazarus" will rank up there with his other outstanding compositions like "African Violet" and "Saint Martin". His treatment of "Sparticus" is no less than awesome. Callier's music gives us hope and inspiration. He is proof that the committed artist can eventually get his/her due. Terry is BACK!This CD belongs in your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful talent, December 1, 1999

This album features some of the most beautiful ballads I have ever heard, particularly on songs like "Keep Your Heart Right" and "Love Theme from Spartacus." It is no wonder that this man has a fiercely loyal cult audience. His voice over the lush strings is enough to bring tears to my eyes. He is also amazing live in concert and his songs command the attention of everyone; they literally stand there speechless listening to him. Really, truly a magnificent album.

I discovered Tahleel Terry Callier's music after hearing People Get Ready/Brotherly Love on WCLK in Atlanta. His melodic tone, musical vibe, and powerful lyrics left a strong imprint on my soul. I was determined to know more about him. Timepeace is a beautiful CD with many really wonderful songs...Keep Your Heart Right, Lazarus Man, People Get Ready, Timepeace...... If only I could discover music like this more often. What a treasure! I can't wait to catch him live in the US or take a trip to the UK. Thank you Tahleel Terry Callier. The Creator has blessed you tremendously!

5.0 out of 5 stars Positive, Uplifting , Spiritual: A beautiful recording, April 26, 2002

I bought this cd without ever having heard any of Terry Callier's music. Word of mouth was enough for me to take a chance. This is easily the best contemporary music I have bought in many, many years. The disc starts with a powerful, yet peaceful track, and continues to mesmerize as the album continues. Some songs are more jazzy, some a bit more folky. We even have Pharoah on many songs! This is a must buy cd!
