Country boy gets it right,

OK . . . Kenny Rogers isn't Natalie Cole or Linda Ronstead. But the songs he's chosen for this album are beautifully matched to his voice and style. This one gets played at least once a week at our house.

This review is from: Timepiece - Orchestral Sessions with David Foster (MP3 Download)
David Foster has worked with almost every big name to create that stylized, incredible orchestral sound surrounding a strong vocal performer: Kenny happens to be one of those on this album.
Mr. Foster is the best at producing this style of music today, and this album is one of those that escaped media attention but is equally as good as those David created by Michael Buble, Josh Groban and the like. The orchestrations are excellent (thank you Jeremy Lubbock and David Foster), and remind you of a time when music was great, not just ordinary and alike. The songs are classic and well-crafted, and David Foster lets Kenny do what he does best: sing the song. Kenny's voice sounds great; he's one of the best with ballads. Though Kenny may not be known for being able to sing this style of music, David Foster (as producer and arranger) has helped create an album worth purchasing. No one is better at creating this type of sound for an artist than Mr. Foster, and Kenny's voice embodies this music beautifully. There is no finer producer working in this genre today, though many try and do okay with it. This is an excellent example of a credible producer working with a credible vocalist with material that is among the finest out there. Produced at a time when Kenny's career was at a bit of a standstill, this album should have brought his name back into the spotlight more in the "pop" arena; I'm surprised it was not as big of a success as those that have come after him. This album is a find, and I recommend it to anyone who likes gorgeous orchestrations with excellent vocals on songs that surpass the test of time. If you like songs that are sung rather than those that are ranted or spoken, this album is an excellent add to any collection.

A most unexpected pleasure,

Never a country fan, I was most grateful to have had my attention drawn to this wonderful record. Every tune is a popular and well known one. Kenny sings quite beautifully and his 'different' yet wholly correct phrasing gives every tune a pleasantly different sound. Above all the huge orchestra playing charts by the wonderful Johnny Mandel and the incredibly beautiful string arrangements by Jeremy Lubbock makes this, for me, one of the best standards albums of all time. Jeremy's arrangements have to be heard to be believed. If you like this kind of music, you just have to have it. It's the bargain of the age.

Kenny Rogers no longer has anything to prove. "Timepiece" is simply exquisite! His classic. His "Stardust."

This doesn't compete with Kenny's best work from 1967-83, but it is easily his most entertaining post Eyes That See In The Dark album. Listening to The Bobby Doyle Three material from the early sixties, Kenny had a better voice for crooning at the time, yet it was a nice idea that Kenny return to the more traditional (as opposed to modern Ray Charles influenced) end of thier sound some 30 years after they broke up. In fact this is Kenny's most clear voiced singing since his First Edition era, and notably it was Terry Williams from The First Edition who first introduced Kenny to producer David Foster some ten years prior to this release.
If you like traditional jazzy ballads and Kenny's voice you will like this album. Personally I like when Kenny does country, rock, or folk the best, but this is to me the sole album Kenny gave 100 percent to in the last 25 years, and really the only that had material that truly challenged him after his 1983 Bee Gees colaberation. It's not something I would play as much as his First Edition or early solo work, but for an album in this genre it is terrific.

My son (who is a musician), and I were riding in his car last year when he poped in this CD. WOW!!!! It was at that point I made a vow to get my own copy!! It took some effort to locate a copy and Amazonn came to my rescue (as always). This one is worth the wait!! According to the delivery date I wasn't to received it until after Christmas but I received mine yesterday and poped it into the CD player and hit repeat. My son's copy is now scratched and he was looking at mine - so today I've ordered one for him . Thanks Amazon for providing me this "hard to find" copy. All of the songs are very nice, but my favorite is "You Are So Beautiful".

What David Foster and his people (arrangers like Johnny Mandel, etc.) can do for a singer is simply remarkable. I've always thought that Kenny Rogers was an OK singer...but Foster and his friends make his performance great on this CD. When I heard "I Remember You"...I was hooked.
