Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Caladonia Hornsby receives unexpected help finding her father's murderer when she gets swept up in a timepool, landing several yards and a hundred years away from shore. Requiem Maguire, undercover narcotics agent and unwilling knight in shining armor, has enough trouble on his hands without herAsomeone wants him dead. A clever plot and a satisfying ending make this an excellent example of a genre-blended novel. Plunkett, a veteran of the time travel romance (e.g., Untamed Time, Penguin, 1999), treats the reader to not one but several trips in time; a bright, courageous heroine; and a wounded hero who stands out in any century. The author resides in Austin, TX.AJC, SM

Review

Monterey, California in 1890 is covered with shadowy figures who threaten murder. Caladonia Hornsby is trapped on the beach, in a tide pool, with only one thought in her mind. She will never find out who killed her father if they manage to kill her this very night. Suddenly, time shifts, and Cally finds herself face-to-face with one of the most dangerous men in modern day Monterey. Requiem Maguire is absolutely sure that the woman he has dragged from the ocean is either deranged or a drug addict. Something about her situation -- her thinking that she is from some other time -- just does not fit with the traditional user's behavior. With all the problems already on the plate of this overworked DEA agent, now he has the additional problem of caring for one of the most captivating and alluring women he has ever met. Her every action speaks of intelligence and vitality. There is nothing to indicate that she is going through withdrawal. She seems to be in her right mind about everything except where she is in time. Eventually, this out-of-time woman and the slogan-wearing Steven-Segal-ish man find themselves needing one another. Cally depends on Req for stability in this new world she faces, especially if she ever wants to find a way home an solve her fathers murder. As for Req? Could it be that she has found the way into his wounded heart? Duty, honor, and responsibility drive both characters to do things they never felt possible. When Req ends up falling back through time with her, he knows that he cannot return to testify against the bad guys until he is sure Cally will be safe. But there is no doubt in either of their minds that he must return. Timepool is a roaring sea of emotion and mystery. The wonderful twists and turns that Susan Plunkett uses to drive the plot are invigorating for both the romance reader and the mystery lover. This is a time-travel that no one should miss! A once-upon-a-time-travel mystery that burns the pages with passion beyond your imagining Timepool hits the mark hard! It's a mystery...it's a romance...it's a two-time sensation! Susan Plunkett rides the high tide with Timepool! Gunning for the bad guys was never so fun! Loving the good guy was never so easy! Karen Ellington -- Copyright © 1999 Literary Times, Inc. 3.0 out of 5 stars Worth picking up and reading, November 8, 1999
By
This review is from: Timepool (Time Passages Romance Series) (Paperback)
What a delightful read. I thoroughly enjoyed Susan Plunkett's latest work, Timepool. I very rarely give a five star rating, and I feel that this story just missed the 4 star as well. If I could give it 3 1/2 stars or a 7 out or 10, I would. Her main character's names are a mouthful, but Requiem and Caladonia are both well defined and interesting to read about. I was quite surprised at how in depth the plot was, especially given that there were two stories going on at once. My biggest criticism was that the story was too short and ended too quickly. The end felt WAY too rushed, like she had to fit this story under a certain number of pages and that was it. I think that there could easily have been another 50 to 100 pages used to finish the plot. We never fully hear what happens to Requiem's story, how it ends, his relationship with his sister, what he is going to do with his life, etc. We are also led to believe that Caladonia's business will eventually fail, and I wonder what she is going to do as well. I know money is not a problem, but are they just going to spend their days basking in each other or are they actually going to be or do something? If you are looking for an interesting, though quick read, pick this book up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sizzles...Plunkett always delivers., July 13, 1999

This review is from: Timepool (Time Passages Romance Series) (Paperback)
In an attempt to find those responsible for the death of her father, Caladonia Hornsby inadvertently stumbles upon another murder. Discovered by the killers, and positive that she is their next victim, Cally hides among the tidepool rocks, backing into a warp that saves her life but at the cost of her heart.

Requiem Maguire, former undercover DEA agent, is a wanted man...wanted by those he plans to testify against and by the strange young woman he pulls from the pre-dawn surf of Monterey Bay. Claiming to come from the past, Cally seems to be telling the truth, but in Req''s line of work there are as many degrees of truth as there are degree of lying. Her innocence and honesty speak eloquently in her favor, and his heart, long hardened by necessity, thaws at her touch, but is this enough evidence to risk his life and possibly hers?

Cally must return to her time, but her love for Req pushes the boundaries of prudence. Req needs a safe place to hide and when Cally takes him to the tidepool for her return she pulls him through, unleashing a chain of events that shatters all concepts of reality, truth, and love.

Over the years I''ve read and reviewed novels by Susan Plunkett, watching her emerge as an author of credibility and excellence. With TIMEPOOL Susan Plunkett distinguishes herself, moving into the field of the elite. Characters of originality drive a plot of complicated splendor to weave a tale of sensual romance and high suspense. It is difficult not to use every superlative in the dictionary when faced with a novel that deserves them all. In TIMEPOOL, Rita finalist Susan Plunkett combines humor, sensuality, and adventure in a book impossible to put down. Gift-wrapped with a red ribbon, TIMEPOOL is a present from Susan to cherish and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Plunkett alway writes a great time trvel, June 8, 1999

This review is from: Timepool (Time Passages Romance Series) (Paperback)
In 1890 Monterey, California, a grieving Caladonia Hornsby overhears several individuals discussing papers stolen from her murdered father. She has no idea what they seek, but they think she may have them. Thoughts of revenge take root when they see her in the shadows. Fleeing into the nearby water, she watches them kill a hired thief and next come for her. However, she escapes by accidentally falling through a TIMEPOOL.

In 1999, Undercover DEA agent Requiem Maguire rescues the woman who appeared out of nowhere in the bay. Requiem is concerned that a vicious criminal wants him dead before he testifies against the individual. He knows he has no time to deal with Cally, who claims to be from the previous century. However, his soul wants to protect her. When she returns to the portal through time to make an effort to go home, he cannot help following her through the warp. Now in 1899 the adventure of a lifetime has just begun.

With novels like HEAVEN'S TIME, and SILVER TOMORROWS, readers already know that Susan Plunkett is one of the best authors of time travel romances. Her latest entry, TIMEPOOL, is an excellent novel that will leave fans of the sub-genre in awe of the talent displayed by her. Regardless of the century, the suspense-laden story line never slows down, as the audience believes that Cally has moved back and forth in time. The lead protagonists are a fabulous pair, struggling with their own problems and safety until love changes the equation. Ms. Plunkett has written what is sure to be recognized as one of the best time travel romances of the last few years.
