Editorial Reviews

Nick Waterhouse is the New Breed - An R&B fanatic who combines an uncanny old-school sensibility and with a charged, contemporary style. Having just turned 25, he joins the ranks of similar acts and producers of recent times - Mark Ronson, Amy Winehouse, Sharon Jones, Mayer Hawthorne, Aloe Blacc et al -- that are all moving forward into the past, yet all quite different. For Waterhouse, his muse is the over-modulated sound of vintage '50s R&B and Rebel Rock n' Roll. His take on such a time-honored tradition evokes the back-alley thrill of New Orleans, Detroit and Memphis in their heyday. He combines an astute attention to detail recording on all vintage equipment with an honest desire to match the emotional impact of the music that inspires him.

I first heard "Say I wanna know" on an Acura commercial. Shazaamed it and immediately bought the album on Amazon. It has been in heavy rotation and has been powering my summer evenings. I mix this with Raphael Saadiq, some drinks, and it's on. Listen and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW - For Real July 22, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I had to check this guy out and make sure I wasn't listening to something from the 1960's. That said, I am very pleased with this album - it started out with a free download for 'Is That Clear' and I was hooked.

I listen to this and think, here is a talented vocalist, playing alongside a great group of musicians. - some of the sounds remind me another artist, whom I wish we he could have recorded with - Amy Winehouse.

That said, just check out a track or two and judge for yourself...

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this album NOW August 15, 2012
Format:Audio CD
This is a well written, expertly performed, and beautifully produced record - if you like early Beatles, Stax, blue-eyed soul and well-crafted, melodic songs, this is the best album that has been released in years - and it's not a revival kick. Nick could be the heir to Elvis Costello if he continues to develop and dversify; the sound he gets is organic and clean. His ultimate talent might be as a record producer, this record sounds THAT good.

Best album of the last 5 years

Retro 60's soul done right. Incredible touch and talent. Singing and guitar playing is completely dedicated and true to the era and is deceptively accomplished. As is the musical arrangement of these songs. This guy has it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bad Recording September 6, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Sound on this CD is absolutely terrible....He sounds better on Darryl's House than on this CD. He may need to listen to his CDs before he tries to sell them. We love his music but bad recording studio.

3.0 out of 5 stars Was really hoping for more (lp) August 6, 2013

I like the music/songs here. My issue is with the recording and production. It seems they were going for a certain type of old school sound. It sounds like a mono record. To me. this is the biggest mistake. I would have enjoyed it so much more if there was a wide soundstage that didn't put all of the musicians in a single focalpoint. The other result of this is that it is "in your face". This will make this record, one that I doubt will get much play in my system. What a waste.

As I was going through the $5 MP3 albums, I came across this goodie and just had to have it. The sound is close to that of 60's blues and R&B. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars '60s Vibe Guitar a bit of California Surf style and more!
Great music, Nick's style would be suitable for the soundtrack of Mad Men, that '60s vibe is very catchy! Listen on YouTube, then buy on Amazon!

5.0 out of 5 stars Reminds you of more retro music
Sounds like music from the 60's and the nightclub scene. Very upbeat and a good pure sound. Played it at work and everyone was tapping their toes or bouncing around. Good music!
