Editorial Reviews

Nick Waterhouse is the New Breed - An R&B fanatic who combines an uncanny old-school sensibility and with a charged, contemporary style. Having just turned 25, he joins the ranks of similar acts and producers of recent times - Mark Ronson, Amy Winehouse, Sharon Jones, Mayer Hawthorne, Aloe Blacc et al -- that are all moving forward into the past, yet all quite different. For Waterhouse, his muse is the over-modulated sound of vintage '50s R&B and Rebel Rock n' Roll. His take on such a time-honored tradition evokes the back-alley thrill of New Orleans, Detroit and Memphis in their heyday. He combines an astute attention to detail recording on all vintage equipment with an honest desire to match the emotional impact of the music that inspires him.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW - For Real July 22, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I had to check this guy out and make sure I wasn't listening to something from the 1960's. That said, I am very pleased with this album - it started out with a free download for 'Is That Clear' and I was hooked.

I listen to this and think, here is a talented vocalist, playing alongside a great group of musicians. - some of the sounds remind me another artist, whom I wish we he could have recorded with - Amy Winehouse.

That said, just check out a track or two and judge for yourself...

I first heard "Say I wanna know" on an Acura commercial. Shazaamed it and immediately bought the album on Amazon. It has been in heavy rotation and has been powering my summer evenings. I mix this with Raphael Saadiq, some drinks, and it's on. Listen and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this album NOW August 15, 2012
Format:Audio CD
This is a well written, expertly performed, and beautifully produced record - if you like early Beatles, Stax, blue-eyed soul and well-crafted, melodic songs, this is the best album that has been released in years - and it's not a revival kick. Nick could be the heir to Elvis Costello if he continues to develop and dversify; the sound he gets is organic and clean. His ultimate talent might be as a record producer, this record sounds THAT good.

Best album of the last 5 years

5.0 out of 5 stars Nick Waterhouse- He gets it!! March 1, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This young man first came to my attention in the Acura commertial, where everyone's grooving to a hot artist playing on the car's stereo system. The ad gives a hint of who the performer is, and in the end of the ad, we see Waterhouse performing through a telescope. After seeing the ad a few times, I put together who the performer was, and so I bought the album, 'Times All Gone'.
DAMN!! There isn't a bad song on it! It sounds like late '50's soul and rock and roll, and is recorded on all vintage gear, giving the album a slightly fuzzy, small recording studio feel, the kind of studio where everyone sang around the same microphone. The effect is almost eerie at times, and Waterhouse uses the vintage sound to full advantage! I believe all songs on the album are new (I might be wrong on that), but I do know Waterhouse wrote most of them. Tracks like 'time's All Gone' pt.1 and pt.2 are VERY good, as are most all the rest of the songs, wandering from slow, bluesy tunes to straight out rock and roll. This kid certainly knows what he's doing, and 'gets' it totally. I can picture him playing in a smoke filled lounge, or just rocking out to him on a lonely road to nowhere. I cant wait to see him live (and I'm an 'old man' of 52!) VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Album for the Non-Pop Fans of Today March 1, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I first saw Nick Waterhouse on a Lexus commercial, of all things, and found the featured track, "Time's All Gone," absolutely addicting. I purchased the CD without hesitation--and am glad I did.

--Great earlier rock 'n roll feel; there are some horns, simple bass guitars, and almost an "analog" sound
--The songs, while having a familiar sound to earlier rock 'n roll, are nonetheless original -- nothing contrived here

--Some of the songs are a bit short but... well, they were back then, too.

--If you love classic rock 'n roll, get this. Read about Waterhouse and prepare to be impressed by his dedication to this era of music--all the way down to his furniture and everyday clothing. Great songs by a truly unique artist in this decade!

3.0 out of 5 stars Less Than Thrilled July 21, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
When I heard Nick Waterhouse doing a song on a TV commercial, then read all the positive user reviews, I figured this was a shoe-in. This shoe didn't fit.

Here's the scoop. Waterhouse does a blues/rhythm and blues type music with a production style and recording that makes it sound like it came out of the Stax recording studio. Some songs are original while others are covers of songs from that 50s-60s era.

There's a lot to applaud here. The recording and production are spot on. It's a classic set-up with a small band augmented with a few horns and a couple of female backup singers. The guitarist stayed well within the bounds of the music from the period as did all the other musicians. They do have that authentic era sound. It almost sounds as though they tried to record everyone at once with as few (if any) dub overs as possible. The trouble for me was two-fold. First are the songs themselves. I just didn't think most of them were all that good. Second was Waterhouse's voice...or should I say the way they recorded his voice. I liked it on the TV commercial, but hearing an entire CD with that clip on his voice really started to grate on me in little time. I'd love to hear how he sings with an un-affected recording.

Being a child of the 60's I missed the R&B surge of music. It was something I went back to in my later years and came to enjoy immensely. I was hoping to find some of that here but it just wasn't happening. I will listen to this again in the hopes it will grow on me. But, as of now, I'm not holding out much hope.

Very much in the style of motown blues. Good production values. Nice gatefold packaging. His guitar work and lyrics are very good.
