The Times Comprehensive is one of the two best single-volume world reference atlases available in English. Of the two, the Times holds the lead in depth of cartographic information. The explanatory material is comprehensive, with the section on map projections particularly valuable and detailed. It is written, however, at a senior high school level or higher. Overall organization is clear and logical. The graphical indexes make locating maps easy. That, plus the thoroughly cross-referenced, 200,000-entry index, makes the Times a model of easy access to an unsurpassed volume of information. The maps are very large, printed on heavy stock with a satiny feel. They flow across the two-page spreads in muted shades of blue, pale greens, and cream, breaking out of the borders when necessary. The detail in these 2*211/2* plates is astonishing, drawing the viewer closer and closer to examine yet another peak, village, or headland. The absence of shaded relief contributes to the level of detail, while the hypsometric and bathymetric tints give finer, more comprehensive detail of elevation and depth than any other single-volume world atlas. This work is a model of what a reference atlas should be: a collection of beautiful, detailed maps supported by a superb set of indexes.

The comprehensive edition of the Times atlas of the world
has been regarded by many as the finest reference atlas ever
made. It has become a standard work of reference for decades
now. The latest edition, the ninth, appeared in 1993 as a
heavy single volume with a gleaming black cover, with a
reprint with revisions released in 1994.
The 123 plates are produced by the renowned Edinburgh (now
Glasgow) cartographers of Bartholomew. The plates are
characterized by sublime use of color, amazing accuracy,
a balanced use of various scale sizes and projections. The
various typefaces are sometimes so romantic that legibility
suffers from it as a consequence.
The atlas is mainly a set of world maps, without many
thematic sections. This focus results in the largest world
atlas index available to date: well over 210,000 entries,
where each entry comes with its longitude + latitude coords;
this makes this atlas the ideal reference work for names all over

No one claiming to be literate or interested in the world around them can be without this book. Parents of school age children should place this Atlas at the top of their list in aquiring volumes to improve their child's education. It should be within easy hand's reach.
No one interested in world events, history or geography can afford to deny themselves the pleasure of its magnificent plates and charts. This is a required investment in knowledge.

I was chillin with my homies, when one of 'em brought me a Times Comprehensiv' Atlas of the World. I'm like, "What you doin' Chiller, bringin' me some old folks huge map thingy?" And he was like, "Yo yo yo, calm down, it's a happening atlas dude, so crack it open!" So like I did and I'm like TIDAL WAVE of information, overload, overload! There was info on every country I know and then some. So I just want to say, don't be all, "Oh look, another dopey atlas gramps got me instead of a dirt bike," This atlas kicks!
