5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful but Dangerous!, April 6, 2011

This book should have some sort of warning sticker: Do Not Read in Public Unless You are Totally Okay with Laughing Out Loud or Sobbing In Front of Strangers. I stupidly read this wonderful book on a train filled with strangers and laughed out loud several times (not in a cute giggly way, but more in a horse-snort kind of way) and followed that performance up by unsuccessfully smothering tears in reaction to another portion of the book. This is a great read for anyone struggling with fertility, childbirth and the effects of both on a relationship. I loved it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended, March 31, 2011
This review is from: Times Two: Two Women in Love and the Happy Family They Made (Hardcover)
An inspiring and candid account of two people in love and the beautiful family that they made. Even though I knew how the book would end I still found myself deeply engrossed with it's contents. An accurate portrayal of the hardships and struggles that go into making an "unconventional" family. The book is humorous in parts, but is also a social commentary on the adversity that gay couples must overcome to start a family. Great read.

I read this book one evening and loved it so much I made my partner read it the next day. We are two mom's with two daughters and the story these two amazing women wrote were funny, sad, but most important they were real. We could relate to so much of the book, except being pregnant at the same time. We think they are crazy for growing through the pregnancy at the same time but we loved reading about the experience. We are going to buy several copies of the book to give to our friends to read. Thank you for sharing!

What a testimony to a book, when you know the end of the story, but you still can't put it down and read it all in one night! Kristen and Sarah's journey that starts with finding out who they are, what they want, and through adulthood and eventually into motherhood is so frank, funny, heart-wrenching, but ultimately inspiring. These are two people who endured so much, and moved mountains to realize their dream of motherhood. As a single Mom of one, it made me feel so incredibly lucky to have my daughter, and also to have been adopted by two parents who wanted children as much as Sarah and Kristen did. You can relate to this story no matter what your lifestyle, but it is an eye-opener to learn about the extra struggles one must go through as a lesbian couple. Amazing read!

As some other reviews have mentioned, I too have been a follower of Kristen's band for several years. So naturally I was anxiously awaiting the release of Times Two, and had it pre-ordered. Once I read it, I was happy to see that it was even more than I expected.

Kristen and Sarah tell their story with such a personal feel, you can easily imagine that you're hearing them tell it to you over coffee. You will laugh out loud, and a few lines down have tears in your eyes. Every page puts you right in the middle of what they experienced while trying to create the family they both dreamed of. There is something in here for everyone to relate to as Kristen and Sarah take us through their younger days of finding themselves, through their continuously evolving career choices, and finally meeting and building a life with each other.

I really enjoyed the opposing perspectives throughout the book, Kristen's ability to find synchronicity along the way combined with Sarah's relying more on medical facts. And at times, they each saw the other's perspective, if only for a little while. This is what a true partner/committed relationship/or marriage should be like, in my opinion. Kristen and Sarah beat all the odds, twice, and at the same time! If that's not book worthy, I don't know what is. So get a copy of Times Two and read about the amazing journey these two strong, empowering women have shared.

5.0 out of 5 stars emotionally amazing, April 7, 2011

Full disclosure: I love Kristen Henderson's band, Antigone Rising. I also love memoirs and autobiographies of people I'm familiar with because I have a general strong curiosity about other people and their lives, what they do, and what makes them tick. I don't like gossip but I love to know what makes people who they are. For this reason, I have been looking forward to this book since the time Kristen was tweeting and blogging about writing it. However, I found that I was just as intrigued by Sarah's story as I was with Kristen's.

I don't have a lot of free time. I work a full time Monday-Friday job and take classes in the evenings. The last book I read took me about 12 weeks to finish. I started this one on a Monday evening and somehow found that I had finished it fewer than 48 hours later.

I was so engrossed in this story that I spent every free moment I could find reading it. Sitting on the floor in the hallway outside my classroom in the minutes before class started, I sat and read, trying as hard as I could to hold back tears. Lying in bed and reading too late into the night, I tried as hard as I could not to laugh too loud and wake up my girlfriend. This book is written in a way that makes you feel like you're sharing the moment, living the events along with them as they happened. I recommend it to all my fellow saps who love the story of a struggle and a happy ending.

It has been a long time since I have read a book that I didn't want to put down. I finished this in less than a day. From the beginning I was drawn in to this story of love and desire to start a family. Even though I knew the ending (the birth of Kate and Thomas)from being a fan of Kristen's band, I did not know the beginning and middle. Truly an enjoyable read, you find yourself on this emotional journey with Kristen and Sarah.

I pre-ordered this book for my kindle and waited anxiously for it to arrive, and I have not been disappointed! I followed Kristen's band, Antigone Rising, starting in the late 90's, through the early bar days up to their opening for the Stones and beyond, and was interested in the book as a fan and a gay mom. This account is heart wrenching at times and hilarious at others. Sarah and Kristen are open, honest, and so utterly human that it's impossible to not be swept away for hours reading this story. Hope they write a part two when Kate and Thomas are teenagers!
