One of my all time favorite,
By ljy1@stern.nyu.edu (New York, Ny) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Timeshadow Rider (Paperback)
I found this book in a used bookstore about 8 years ago and I was hoked on Ann Maxwell from then on. The reprinted edition placed her book in the Romance section when in reality it is a Science Fiction with romantic twists. The story is beautiful, romantic, imaginative and it definitely touched my soul everytime I read it. Rather than the regular complacent romance novels with their common plotlines, this book got me hooked from the getgo. So if you're into science fiction, fantasy, this book will not disapoint. If you're a romance fan, this book is way better than any romance novel and you will love it. Anyone who give it a 3 stars is either lacking in imagination or too lazy to exercise his or her mind in a great book. Now, my only problem is finding all her other out-of-print SF novels. However, for those of you who might be confused, to simplify, the author depicts a universe where men and women are born with soulmates who, if they are luck enought, will find each other through endless lifetimes. the world Sharia and Kane came from has a millions of years old civilization. the people have either 4, 5, or 6 fingers on each hand. One of its taboo is that those with the same # of fingers are forbidden to touch. More importantly, their culture forbid those who are soulmates to touch or mate and exiles the male counterparts offworld. The reason for this taboo is a prophesy that one day, there will be a pair of soulmates who, if they touch, will destroy the universe with the unleshing of their combined power. You can figure out who the couple is...

I wish there were more futuristic titles by this author.,

Hi, I've read several of Ann Maxwell/Elizabeth Lowell's books, but the books that I've enjoyed most were the FUTURISTIC ones. I really enjoyed them because most "futuristic" romance writers just transfer the me-babarian, you-sex-slave approach found in historicals to a different planet and call it "futuristic." I really enjoyed the Ann Maxwell futuristic books because the heroine was strong and admirable instead of some wimp who would sell her freedom for good sex. Once again, I would like to say that I really wish that Ann Maxwell would write more FUTURISTIC books.

My All Time Favorite Book,
By DimpledOne "ivdimples" (Queens, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Timeshadow Rider (Paperback)
This has been my favorite book for close to ten years. Incredibly complex so if you're looking for a book to just while away the time and drift with, this is not the one. But if you're looking for a book that's intense, with characters whose emotions can be felt through the prose you've found the right book. Timeshadow Rider blends sci-fi, romance and the extraordinary with a touch of mystery and suspense indescribably well. But a note of warning, do not try to read this when you are pressed for time, when you'll have to put it down for long periods of time or in snatches on lunch breaks and commutes to and from work. All that will do is frustrate you as you'll have to spend time reimmersing yourself in this vivid and extremely well detailed world before things start to make sense again.
This is a book that will leave you thoroughly satisfied the first time you read it and increase in depth each successive read-through. Everytime I read it I find some new little nuance that I missed the first time and makes the book even better. That's incredible considering how much I enjoyed it the first time I read it. There's another reviewer that got it exactly right, this is a book that will leave you with the feeling that all is right with the world. Last bit of advice, some of the names look to be tongue twisters pick your preferrence for pronunciation and keep reading. If you allow yourself to get hung up on how to pronounce Za'arain or kiriy you're going to miss the point of the story

A truly fabulous read if you love literature!,

This review is from: Timeshadow Rider (Paperback)
This is not the rehashed pap and easy reading most romance novel readers expect. I must admit, my taste in books leans towards what might be called literature. I admire a well crafted sentence, a twisted plot line, and authors who don't repeat phrases constantly. This book is not one to read in an hour, it's a book to savor and enjoy. The plot and names demand that you slow down and read every bit, and this works very well for a romance novel as it helps to build the suspense. By the end of the book, I had gotten so into that characters that I actually cried at the end and felt as though everything would always be right in our universe. There's been a rash of spy-thriller-action novels with romance in them, and seemingly replacing the regency romances, but I wish more authors would follow in Ann Maxwell's footsteps and create novels with plotlines of cosmic importance and hot moments. If you're looking for a cheap novel with lots of trashy sex and purple prose, look to some of those common authors. If you want a real science fiction book with sexual tension (and one very anticipated scene that will melt you), then this is most definately your book. This book is one of my favorite posessions, and it's displayed prominently on my bookshelf.

A Time tour de force,
By Lisandra "TimeWatcher" (Tacoma, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Timeshadow Rider (Paperback)
I found this book to be intrigueing and facinating. Yes, this book could be exhausting but no more so then Tolkien's Hobbit and much less dry in its background. It's maze-like but then so is Time in all its guises and possiblities. I like how the author tied the expanse of space and time together, bringing in psi abilities and their effect on creativity and ingenuity. She also seemed to epitomize the trek theme..infinite diversity in infinite ways. The romance in it was well done. My advice grab the cat, your favorite snack and curl up for a good ride.

I simply cannot imagine how anyone could not absolutely love this wonderful book. The love story was beautiful and engrossing, the plot was suspenseful and well thought out and the characters were to die for. I am an avid reader of science-fiction, fantasy, and romance novels and this book captured elements of all of them. I have read this book more than a dozen times and love it each time. Anyone who likes romance and science-fiction will absolutely love this book!!!!

Goooooood Book!.,

The story line was so good that I wish that I could have given it five stars; and I would have if the author had not rum amuck. This is the first time I have read anything by Ann Maxwell, and it would have beem my last if I had had anything els to read. Do your self a favor and push your way through the first chapter. Although it makes little or no sense in the begaining, it sets the entire story up nicely. Maxwell's use of double negatives and nonsense was enought to make the reader want to scream. Her imagination made you forgive her, as she pulled you into the story and her characters lives. It was so very enchanting. This was a truly good book.

Long ago and far away,

I was given this book in 1987 (the out of print version which I'd give my left foot for) and the concept of Lias'tri (a soul mate) has remained in the back of my mind ever since. Fortunately I found mine! A very memorable book with a deep look into human emotion. Good reading for young adults, especially (12 to 30).

She knows how to grab your attention and bring you into her world. The book is beautifully written and spectacular in all the details it contains. It's as if you are there, you feel everything and you go through all the struggles, the battles and triumphs. I hope Ann Maxwell never stops, the world of Fantasy romance would be a very dull place.

Wonderful,
By Gail Shelton (magys@hillsboro.net) (Hillsboro, Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Timeshadow Rider (Paperback)
Ann Maxwell creates an intricate universe for her characters, but doesn't beat us over the head with it. It is introduced naturally, the environment where her characters live. And what characters! You will care what happens to them, their struggles almost overwhelm them, and in the end, of course, they triumph. But the getting there is a wonderful trip
