Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Greenspan (English, Skidmore) offers a third recent chronology of women's history, complementing James Trager's The Women's Chronology and Kirstin Olsen's Chronology of Women's History (both LJ 8/94). Greenspan's work differs from the other two primarily in layout, the utilization of the double-page grid of other timetables titles, and the inclusion of nearly 100 short essays. The essays include biographical sketches and topics such as housework, dowry, pornography, Renaissance artists, women in early Islam, and the feminization of poverty. Unfortunately, there are no bibliographies for these essays, nor is there a bibliography for the work as a whole. In a comparison of several entries, Greenspan has little overlap with either Trager or Olsen. Appropriate for school, public, and undergraduate collections. (Index and several essays not seen.)-Patricia A. Beaber, Trenton State Coll. Lib., N.J.

From Booklist

This latest in Simon & Schuster's Timetables series (Timetables of History, Timetables of American History, Timetables of Jewish History, Timetables of Science) lists thousands of entries in parallel columns. In the introduction, Greenspan defines the 10 categories under which women's activities are listed: Daily Life/Customs/Practices, Humanities/Fine Arts, Reform, Science/Technology/Discovery, Statecraft/Military, etc.

Short essays that focus on key individuals and events or provide overviews of issues and trends in women's history distinguish this title from the other chronologies, Chronology of Women's History [RBB S 15 94] and The Women's Chronology [RBB O 15 94]. Essays cover such topics as "The Italian Women's Movement" and "The Feminization of Poverty and Homelessness." Black-and-white photographs throughout the book add interest. The detailed index cites year and category.

This chronology begins in approximately 4000 B.C., discussing deities in the Sumerian religion. It ends in 1992, including such events as Katherine Dunham's hunger strike, the designation of 1992 as the "Year of the Woman," and the UN conference in Geneva dealing with poor rural women.

Not as comprehensive as the Chronology of Women's History, this attractive book is similar to The Women's Chronology. It is a recommended purchase for public and school libraries that don't own one of the other chronologies.

4.0 out of 5 stars LET'S HEAR IT FOR WOMEN, April 29, 2004
This review is from: Timetables of Women's History (Hardcover)
Taking the position that women were relegated to secondary status as history was written, the author, who has penned several studies on women in the Middle Ages, seeks to rectify that oversight.

Archeological evidence, qualified as somewhat ambiguous, sheds some light on the lives of women in prehistoric times. For instance, 26,000 years ago the portrait of a woman was crafted in ivory. Nearby that discovery was found what might be her grave, apparently the burial was an honored one.

The Middle Ages produced some talented artists, often nuns who copied texts and colored the illustrations; 23 female painters lived in Bologna in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Prodigious research makes this text both fact-filled and fascinating. Women's history from the dawn of civilization to a mass march on Washington, D.C. is carefuly documented.
