4.0 out of 5 stars Timex Expedition WS4 watch

1.0 out of 5 stars should have listened to ALL the reviews re. this watch
First of all I love Timex -- this watch keeps time well, it's alarm works fine, all the usual time piece type stuff work fine. However those things are not the reason you would buy this watch, you buy it for the altimeter, barometer, thermometer, weather condition and compass right ? Well the altimeter was off -- the barometer was off- I was unable to adjust them -- the...

First of all I love Timex -- this watch keeps time well, it's alarm works fine, all the usual time piece type stuff work fine. However those things are not the reason you would buy this watch, you buy it for the altimeter, barometer, thermometer, weather condition and compass right ? Well the altimeter was off -- the barometer was off- I was unable to adjust them -- the compass went haywire on me only once , thank god I was not in the back country and really needed it --the temperature ( the manuel says" it will be off by 10 degrees") mine was off by 12 - 15 degrees , it recommends it be worn on your belt- if you want an accurate reading- ON YOUR BELT-- IT'S A WRISTWATCH. The weather conditions well if the other settings don't work that feature didn't have a chance . I gave it time, I played with it, I wanted it to work but will listen to reviews more carefully next time.

To my surprise and initial consternation it was much bigger than I had expected but once I got used to it it is quite comfortable and fairly easy to use. Functionality wise it has all the functions an outdoors adventurer could want (except for GPS functionality). It is easy to read anjd jumping between functions is simple. All in all a very nice watch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but need to set it up correctly, March 8, 2010

I owned a Casio Pathfinder for 10 years. Now, I have Timex Expedition WS4. They both have Triple Sensor Altimeter/Barometer/Digital Compass. They are good watches. I would like to capare them together.

To compare a Casio Pathfinder to Timex Expedition WS4:
- SET UP. Casio Pathfinder does not need to be set up. You can start using it out of the box. Timex Expedition WS4 does need to be set up correctly for every sensors before you can start using it. If the set up is not correct, you will get the wrong reading. CASIO Win.
- READING. Casio Pathfinder has a botton for each of the sensors. You can read the sensors by one push of button. Timex Expedition WS4 has only 1 button for all secsors reading. You have to continue pressing that button until you find the sensor that you want to read. CASIO Win.
- SIZE. Both are big watch. No Winner.

Timex Expedition WS4 is a good watch to have for your outdoor activities. However, I give Timex Expedition WS4 4 stars. The main reason is because it cannot beat my 10 years old Casio Pathfinder.

I was really drawn to the design of this watch and I wanted it to work. Notwithstanding the other reviews, I realized that I could only get an accurate temperature reading with the watch off my wrist. No big deal...all the other watches that measure temperature are like that too. I liked the elastic type strap furnished with this particular model. It looked good, was comfortable and worked well with a metal clasp for both direct wrist use and over outer clothing.

About 10 days into wearing it the watch went blank? No hard use just everyday normal wear. The rear battery compartment was a twist off and was easy to get into but was not loose? The battery measured full juice...OK!? I reinserted the battery and tightened the cap and voila' the display came back on and I reset all functions. The watch appeared to be functioning normally and I wore it for a few more days but the barometer would not budge from its 10.-- inHG reading?

I decided not to fool with it anymore and returned the watch to Amazon for a refund. I was disappointed but decided to pay a little more for a new Casio PAW2000-1. We'll see how that goes?

4.0 out of 5 stars Great watch, bigger than I thought, December 17, 2010
This review is from: Timex Expedition WS4 Widescreen 4-Function Watch (Black/Orange) (Sports)
I have had this watch for a few days now. My wife got it for me for my birthday after I mentioned it looked cool in a magazine (I have a great wife!). When I first opened it, I was a little suprised at how big it is. The elastic wristband is very comfortable, but adjusting it is a little tricky if you have a smaller wrist. I like that it is made to go over a jacket cuff...this watch was made for people who are really going to use it in the backcountry, not much of a fashion statement. When I first set it up, it seemed to be a little erratic in its measurements. However, as I have spent a few days playing with it, I realize it is quite accurate. The calibration sequence is a little complex, but once you are used to it, it is pretty easy to remember. I have calibrated the alt, barometer, and weather a few times now, and i notice the alt and barometer are now giving very accurate readings. The barometer is suprisingly accurate when compared to weather channel or accuweather data. Even the weather forecasting seems to be reasonably accurate...it is a little hard to get used to the idea that the weather icon is predicitng future weather (4 to 6 hours in advance), not reporting current conditions. Overall, this watch does exactly what I had hope it would. I can't wait to take it out on a 4 or 5 day backpacking tirp. Knowing with some reasonable accuracy when it might rain is going to be very good! I recommend this watch, as long as you know what to expect: large, precise but a little complex to calibrate, and easy to use once it is set up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Watch, February 2, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Timex Expedition WS4 Widescreen 4-Function Watch (Black/Orange) (Sports)
It's more the interface that attracted me to this watch ... the predictions are pretty accurate , yes the temperature is higher when the watch is worn ... however that's understandable just as if a thermometer was placed near a heat source ... just minus a few degrees and you have the right degree... the compass is a nice function to have and is accurate.. as for the weather prediction icon don't forget it's predicting the temperature in advance so the next 6 - 8 hrs not the current .. and it's always going to be a prediction.. so nothing is set in stone... Overall very pleased with this watch and it's just a fun one as well....

Enjoy~

for an abc watch this is the most accurate overall that i have used. i also have suuntos, casios, and highgear abc watches. this watch is very user friendly, much more so than the suuntos and highgear. only negative is that it is a "huge" watch. i really like it though in spite of size.

3.0 out of 5 stars More of bulk, less of substance.., August 26, 2011
This review is from: Timex Expedition WS4 Widescreen 4-Function Watch (Black/Orange) (Sports)
After wearing the watch for about 3 weeks, i came up with these remarks:

- Complaints on the design: A horizontal dividing LINE and a CIRCLE that's enclosing the analog display was engraved on the screen cover instead of on the LCD which made one feel like wearing a kiddy kiddy watch.

- The time display was supposed to be a BIG BOLD font, but why o why the designer opted for a thin tiny winy dotted font, not minding time reading as the main focus of the wearer.

-The thermometer is there for a reason of having a thermometer. It could not be calibrated and doesn't respond to ambient temperature fast, but respond to body heat fast and the changes in reading is abrupt - not gradual.

- Altimeter seems ok, the margin of error i recorded is (-)5 meter at same reference point at random, so far.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, fun watch!, August 28, 2010

I find this watch to do everything it claims, at least for me. (I restrict my pursuit of the 7 Summits to reading and documentaries). Though a little bulky, it is fairly light. The only negative I can think of is that the elastic band's adjustablility is limited for thin wrists.
All of the functions work well, and the compass, barometer and altimeter are quite consistent in their readings. So far my peak altitude has been 1148 feet...very depressing!
I highly recommend it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Big Display? Not big enough for me, September 19, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Timex Expedition WS4 Widescreen 4-Function Watch (Black/Orange) (Sports)
All the hype about the size of this guy had me interested but it's not big enough! I've got really bad near sightedness and need reading glasses over my contacts to see close-up. A big display would help but this one crams too much at once when what I could use would be a really BIG display of one function at a time. This of course is my problem and won't affect everyone else. It works well and functions well, tho the instructions ain't much help. I have a hard time believing that guy made it up Everest with this - the clasp pops open on its own with little encouragement. I've got a Casio Riseman and it's good but I'm still looking for a bigger view - Suunto anyone?
