5.0 out of 5 stars I Like This Watch!
I bought this watch because I needed a new one and because I was curious about how pressure varies during airplane flights. So far I like all the features of this watch. It tells time quite accurately, is very easy to read in various conditions, and many of its features are intuitive. So far it also seems to be fairly rugged, which was a concern, though for under $100,...

1.0 out of 5 stars Reason not to buy
Do not buy this watch if you are a skier. The altitude measurement is accurate but the accumulated altitude (accumulated vertical for skiers) does not work - it seems to accumulate about half the correct number on the way up and continues to accumulate on the way down - which it is not supposed to do. Timex will not admit to this problem. However I would highly recommend...

5.0 out of 5 stars I Like This Watch!, June 28, 2006

It tells time quite accurately, is very easy to read in various conditions, and many of its features are intuitive. So far it also seems to be fairly rugged, which was a concern, though for under $100, I am not too concerned, as long as it lasts a few years.

Note that if you are serious about using the altimeter, you must know an accurate starting altitude (to with 10 feet) or the barometric pressue when you start your hike. Otherwise, the watch has no chance of giving accurate altitude readings. In climates that have very frequent pressure changes, you'll need a topographical map or wireless access to the Internet to recalibrate during your hike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Watch for over 40 Eyes, March 3, 2006
This is a great watch for those of us who are using reading glasses. For the first time since turning 45, I can see what the time is in the dark without my reading glasses on. The thermometer function is great and the altitude function seems accurate. The wrist band is very robust looking and comfortable.

No question, I would buy this watch again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to use, February 24, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I find that many watches that have a lot of features are hard to navigate all the combinations of bbuttons. This one is very intuitive. When you have to hold a button for a while to set it, a screen pops up to tell you that. Really exemplary design.

Also the only one I found with 5 daily alarms. Perfect to remind diabetics when to shoot up. I love it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Watch, February 23, 2006

Large digital display, easy to set, altimeter needs calibration often (sometimes reads sea level as 200' -- for real accurate altimeter you'll pay a lot more), barometer works quite well, dual time (T1 & T2) is real nice touch. Overall, I'm very happy with the purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars A little big but gets the job done, March 8, 2007
This is a very nice watch for the avid climber. The altimeter is accurate and also shows a graph of your accent and decent. Besides the watch being a little big due to the altimeter this is a great watch.

1.0 out of 5 stars Good hardware, weak software, May 17, 2009

This review is from: Timex Men's T41501 Expedition Adventure Tech Altimeter Barometer Resin Strap Watch (Watch)
[Note: this is a revision of an earlier review; I originally thought the altimeter was inaccurate but later discovered that I was wrong.]

This watch has both strengths and weaknesses. The strengths tend to be in the hardware, while the weaknesses are in the software. The bottom line is that it's an OK watch for the price, but if you are serious about sports you should look elsewhere.

On the plus side, the thermometer and altimeter (when calibrated) are both reasonably accurate. I've checked the altimeter against a couple of standards, including Google Maps, GPS, and another altimeter watch, and the results agree within about 20 feet, which is as good as you can expect. I also lucked out and got a unit that keeps very accurate time (it gains less than one second per month).

On the minus side, the display is clunky and badly designed. The main numbers are very large (good for aging eyes) though low-resolution, but the auxiliary indicators such as AM/PM are so tiny that I need a magnifying glass to see them.

Worse, the software inside the watch is full of bugs. Sometimes the reported temperature is absurd (like 890.4 degrees); cycling through modes might or might not correct the problem. The altimeter display gets stuck and won't recover until you leave and re-enter altimeter mode. The accumulated-altitude algorithm seems to be "add half the actual gain or loss", which would produce either total climb (for runners and cyclists) or total descent (for skiers) except that it doesn't do the arithmetic reliably. The mode switching is random (sometimes it goes to the next mode, sometimes straight back to time). Finally, the altitude graph makes no sense whatsoever; I haven't even been able to figure out what the designers thought they were trying to do.

BTW, the strap is nonstandard and is designed so you can't lay the watch flat on a table--a major drawback when you have to remove it to get accurate temperature readings.

Would I buy it again? No. It's a good price, but in the end I got a Casio PAG80-1V, which has its own problems but at least behaves consistently.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great watch, June 12, 2007
Figuring aout how to set all the features was a little difficult, but overall I have been impressed. The one feature that seems to be a little off is the tempature. It is really affected by your body tempature.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very pleasant watch, May 20, 2007

Nice pretty watch, good making, accurate for most functions : time, pressure, temperature, chrono, except the altimeter, which does not return to it's initial value when you move and change of altitude. For example, it doesn't like fast elevators, when the altitude changes quickly the altimeter becomes mad, and needs to be recalibrated.

4.0 out of 5 stars More that a watch, April 1, 2008

Kart racer (Southwest USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Timex Men's T41501 Expedition Adventure Tech Altimeter Barometer Resin Strap Watch (Watch)
I bought this watch to set the jetting on my racing go kart. I needed to know field elevation, and temperature. Plus changes in barometric pressure as the day went on. Most teams use a weather station and computer that cost over $700 for this purpose. My watch and accompaning chart (for the motor) has given me the same results.
I can also use it for timing with the stop watch.
The only negative is you do need to calibrate it often, and if you want accurate temprature take it off and put in a shaded place for a while.
It will pick up your body heat.
Would I do it again ( purchase it) Yes I would,I like it.
