4.0 out of 5 stars Nice watch but strap has to go!, October 3, 2009
This review is from: Timex Men's T45171 Expedition Analog and Digital Combo Watch (Watch)
I bought this watch almost a week ago and like it a lot. It has a lot of features and since it is all plastic it is light compared to my metal watch. I found out that it has a feature I didn't know about-a snooze alarm (do nothing when the alarm sounds and in 5 minutes the alarm sounds again). Also, you can put this watch into night mode which means that the indiglo stays lit for 3 seconds while rotating though functions at night. The directions included were wrong and it was by calling Timex that I figured this out-hold in the upper left button (button 1) for 3 seconds to switch between day mode and night mode and not the lower right button in the directions (button 3).

The rotating bi-directional bezel dial is a must for me. Some other expedition watches with bezels are only for show and not operational so be careful. Unfortunately the bezel is plastic on this watch and reminds me of gray PVC piping with black paint.

It has 2 digital time zones and 1 analog...hence the 3 advertised but if you sync the digital and analog time then it's only 2 time zones. The second time zone only allows you to set the hour so I put the GMT time zone here.

I like the calendar function on this watch. The year needs to be set on this along with the month and day. This means that it knows when a year contains a leap day and when it does not. Also, setting times, dates and alarms are simplified by this watch allowing you to switch between whole numbers-to set 5:55 it gives you the ability to switch between each of the 3 fives.

Then there's the included black velcro band. What a waste. It needs a black twist o flex or black commando watch band. I opted for the black commando watch band since it can also protect the watch.

3 times now in the last 5 days the digital functions have frozen on me. Twice when the chimes were on it stuck with an annoying ring that wouldn't stop. I found that this watch can be reset with by simultaneously pushing all 4 buttons at the same time. This resets everything except the analog portion of the watch and then you need to spend time setting the alarm and 2 time zones.

Bottom line is that the watch is nice but not aesthetically pleasing. It would have been nice to have an all metal watch with a rotating metal bezel that was analog and digital. This is a nice casual watch that is comfortable since it is light.

EDIT:

After having this watch for a month and looking at other brands of digital/analog watches I am convinced that Timex has a corner on this market and that I made a good buy. Other digital/analog watches I've seen don't have a second hand and the digital display looks squashed and ugly. I like how the second hand makes a neat quiet sound and the time is easily visible from any angle... while the hourly chimes and indiglo light give me the best of both the analog and digital world!!

I wound up getting a nice gray and black plastic/metal clasp band for $10 at a local jeweler that looks great!

EDIT 2...3 months of use now!

Well I've had this watch 3 months now and there isn't a scratch on the bezel or crystal-this is a very durable watch...even if it is plastic. I love this time piece! I've been looking at other brands digital/analogs and haven't found anything yet that I like more than Timex.

Oh, more about the band. I've replaced the band with 3 different styles now. You will need a 20 mm band where it goes into the watch (the distance between the lugs). I tried a black Twist O Flex but didn't like how the one I had moved side to side...it was adjustable unlike the ones you buy on the watch already. I've now settled on a black metal fixed band that easily adjusts at the clasp (I found both on ebay for under $20 each brand new). Hopefully Timex will just do away with the velcro band and sell these watches with black Twist O Flex bands that are not adjustable.

Did I mention that the bezel actually moves and is useful! Why do watches have stationary bezels?

EDIT again...6 months of use now!

I'm still lovin this watch. I put another watch band on it...4th band now. I went with a black 20mm MODENA Ridgo ridged Italian rubber watch band with a metal locking clasp (I bought it here on Amazon for $12 and like it a lot). Something that I realized recently about it is that the crystal is recessed just a bit because of the bezel. Not all dial watches are this way. I have a Relic dial watch that is flush with the crystal-this is not good if you hit the wall with your watch. Recessing the crystal the way Timex has done protects your watch crystal. Another reason Timex has a customer for life!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wunderbar! Supertoll! Perfect!, May 4, 2007
This wristwatch may have a narrow armband but I find it to be comfortable, sturdy and strong; I do not understand what all the fuss is about! I found the controls for the settings to be easy to understand and remember. I travel a lot and the three time zones are a great feature, the compass features is great too and it is light weight, waterproof and shockproof and it has stood up to the wear and tear of traveling via plane, train, auto, foot, bicylcle, motorcycle and even hunting and skinning the kill, it makes a great camping watch too. The only thing I do not need is the lap time feature but do not register that as a complaint for it IS a feature that works great and might be of some use to someone, just not I. You will not regret this purchase!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great watch, March 25, 2008
A Kid's Review
This is a good watch for the price. I bought one, and have had it for almost a year. What makes it better than many of the other digital and analog watches is the fact that the two sync with eachother. It is very anoying when the second hand ticks slower than the digital display. Another thing that is great is the count down timer, it is a very usefull accesory.

AT PURCHASE TIME: This is a great everyday watch! The light weight, and fast wrap band are so comfortable that I wear it around home when other watches would be taken off. Though I have had Indiglo watches before, the neat thing about this one is that it reverses what you normally see, i.e. the black face is the lightest part, and the light numbers turn black when Indiglo is engaged. The timing is right on as well. Soon after it arrived, I set this watch to the time on my computer, which is controlled by an internet server. Several days later, and it still matched my computer's time to the second! I almost bought another watch at twice the price. I'm sure glad that I chose this one instead.
UPDATE March 2011: As I prepared to "Spring forth" to daylight savings time, I found that my adjustment knob was no longer there. I don't know when or where it fell off, as the time was accurate, and never needed adjusting, except for daylight/standard time change twice per year. It's a shame, but I will now need to shop for a new watch. This watch might still be usable for standard time during the winter, until the battery dies. But that's about it.
This is just another aspect of the world we live in, where things need to go bad, and fill the landfills, so that we will buy the next version, at a higher price, to keep the sellers in business. Not likely a sustainable scenario.

2.0 out of 5 stars After 4 months the digital doesn't keep on ticking, March 11, 2009
This review is from: Timex Men's T45171 Expedition Analog and Digital Combo Watch (Watch)
This watch had everything I could need in a watch, but after changing the time for daylight savings the digital won't work anymore. The light button won't even work. I have had this watch for barely 4 months and now for 5 days my watch stays on 3-7 SA. The alarm goes off every morning at 8am. I never set it to. I can't change anything but the analog time. Thankfully it still runs.

5.0 out of 5 stars its a timex, what did you expect?, July 29, 2008

Reliable, small, comfortable, and durable. THis is the best analog watch for the money. I wear it on the ambulance all the time where the easy-to-read secondhand makes taking vitals accurately hassle free (as much as possible anyways). The spinning ring makes it good for tracking my time on scene also. Definitely recommend it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this watch, May 29, 2008

After purchasing this watch as a replacement for one of my other watch's I kept it in a drawer for a few months before my other watch died. I love watch's with both analog & digital time keeping capabilities. As an EMT I love the second hand on watch's. However after my first watch of 3 years died (a walmart special) I put this one into use. After 11 days I noticed it was broken. Apparently while I was washing my hands the button to set the analog watch fell off and water made it into the watch. For 100 m water resistance it didn't last a simple hand washing let alone anything at depth. Very upset especially after hearing Timex's logo for years. My first and last Timex I will ever buy.

1.0 out of 5 stars Junk watch., September 4, 2010
This review is from: Timex Men's T45171 Expedition Analog and Digital Combo Watch (Watch)
I have had three of these. everyone of them broke with in 3 months.

first one, the digital went wacky and wouldnt work properly any more. i did a walmart exchange in it and got another this one had the analog adjustment pin fall out and fill with water. thinking it was just a fluke, i got yet another one via walmart exchange and again, the adjustment pin fell out.

also the plastic adjustment bezel paint flaked off with in 2 weeks on ever one of them ive had. it wasnt a big deal because the color plastic its made of is the same color as the paint, but its still worth noting

i love this watch and wanted very desperately for it to be good, but alas, it disappointed me not once, not twice, but 3 times before i finally said screw it and gave up on the exhanges.

This review is from: Timex Men's T45171 Expedition Analog and Digital Combo Watch (Watch)
I bought this Timex Expedition to replace an Expedition that I've had for 6+ years. My old one was sturdy and surprisingly took more than one bump I never expected. This one lasted less than a week before I broke off the crown (to set the time) when I was simply reaching into the refrigerator. I thought about making a warranty claim, but the apparent impact was just hard enough to scratch the plastic barrier designed to protect it. I couldn't believe it. My last one didn't have the barrier, likely because it didn't need it. Timex has seriously sacrificed quality in pursuit of keeping prices low. I ordered a Casio G-Shock to replace my Timex.

This review is from: Timex Men's T45171 Expedition Analog and Digital Combo Watch (Watch)
Overall this is a good watch. It has a number of useful features - Indiglo, day/date, timers, alarm, 2nd time zone, etc. The bezel moves as well. The case thickness is a bit on the high size - about 13 or 14mm. The watch is very lightweight, so it's only the case thickness that can give you the sensation of it being a bit bulky.

One warning, though. You'll want to replace the watchband. The minute I received it, I knew I'd be replacing it. The velcro band that comes with the watch is horrible, uncomfortable, and is not as flexible as you might think. I found a few online sites that sell replacement bands, and found a good sports band at [...] that fits very well, and greatly improved my opinion of this watch.
