Amazon.com Product Description

Designed for active, outdoor lifestyles, the full-sized Timex T48581 Expedition digital watch also includes a highly accurate digital compass to help keep you on course when hiking the trails or urban spelunking. Compass features include bearings based on 16 cardinal points measured in degrees and a function that enables you to set declination angle based on geography. It has a large, round resin case in brown that's topped with a black ring featuring compass headings. It also features a 100-hour chronograph, alarm, English or metric units, water resistance to 100 meters (330 feet), and a genuine leather strap in brown.

The Indiglo night-light uniformly lights the surface of the watch dial using patented blue electroluminescent lighting technology. It uses less battery power than most other watch illumination systems, enabling your watch battery to last longer. The Night Mode feature allows you to illuminate the Indiglo night-light for 3 seconds with any button press, regardless of the mode or function.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best watch I ever owned, September 7, 2004
This review is from: Timex Men's T48581 Outdoor Performance Digital Compass Expedition Watch (Watch)
My experience with this watch for over two years has been terrific. I do a lot of hand work and am very rough on watches. I logged in here to order myself two more of these watches because mine is looking pretty rough. It has been dropped, stomped, scraped, crushed, dunked and just all-round abused and it still works flawlessly. When I read that negative review I just had to share my experience with this watch. I can afford more expensive watches but why would I when this one fits my needs so well. Great display. Easy to see at all times in all light conditions. Compass, night light feature. The band has really held up well. Mine stays wet with sweat (Alabama) and gets soaked in all kinds of stuff and still looks great. I compete in handgun competitions so this watch gets hundreds of major shocks each month and it just keeps on working well for me. I hope this makes up for the one bad review. This watch will serve you well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overall A Good Watch, January 9, 2005
By
This review is from: Timex Men's T48581 Outdoor Performance Digital Compass Expedition Watch (Watch)
Overall this is a good watch over the past couple of weeks I have had it.

I love the larger text with the bright background-- it makes it very easy to read under most conditions. The curving of the text to the contours of the face is interesting looking and makes the font larger. I had an older Timex Expedition with the regular rows of numbers, and it was much harder to see.

The digital compass seems to work okay. It seems to read most reliably outdoors, away from cars and buildings. This is a shame, because sometimes it is nice to be able to get a read on which way you are driving when you are lost. Instead it goes kind of crazy and reads NNW then SSE then W while you are keeping it in position-- at least it is easy to tell that it isn't able to take a reading.

The biggest design problem has been listed in some of the other reviews... the buttons can stick. In my case this isn't disasterous. It just doesn't fully un-depress because rough surface of the button drags on the casing. In my situation it doesn't mean that the button function stays engaged all the time, it just makes it more susceptable to accidentally engaging. It most often happens with the Set button. I can generally jigger it back out without much trouble with my fingernail, but this is a bit of a nuisance. I'm hoping the buttons will loosen up when the rough surfacing wears down.

The backlight is great-- you engage it with the Indiglo button on the watch face. The functions are pretty easy to use, if the buttons don't stick.

1.0 out of 5 stars crap, November 24, 2004
This review is from: Timex Men's T48581 Outdoor Performance Digital Compass Expedition Watch (Watch)
Firstly, the buttons seem to protrude too much, cauing them to be depressed unintentionally. After about a week a couple of the buttons seemed to jam up. A week later the display turned off completely. All this after only 2 weeks of wear. This watch is a poorly designed piece of crap.
