The Timex Story

Timex Group B.V. is one of the best-known American watch companies. Timex's U.S. headquarters are located in Middlebury Connecticut and it has substantial operations in China, the Philippines and India and full scale sales companies in Canada, the UK, France and Mexico.

The company began in 1854 as Waterbury Clock in Connecticut's Naugatuck Valley, known during the nineteenth century as the "Switzerland of America." Sister company Waterbury Watch manufactured the first inexpensive mechanical pocket watch in 1880. During World War I, Waterbury began making wristwatches, which had only just become popular, and in 1933 it made history by creating the first Mickey Mouse clock under license from Walt Disney, with Mickey's hands pointing the time.

During World War II, Waterbury renamed itself U.S. Time Company. In 1950 the company introduced a wristwatch called the Timex. Over the next three decades, Timex was sold through a series of advertisements which emphasized its durability by putting the watch through "torture tests," such as falling over the Grand Coulee Dam or being strapped to the propeller of an outboard motor, with the slogan "It takes a licking and keeps on ticking." With the help of former Olympic broadcaster, spokesman John Cameron Swayze, sales took off. The company later became Timex Corporation, then Timex Group and, to date, has sold over one billion watches.

The company has remained very competitive and the Timex brand continues its dominance through present day. Its primary market remains the United States and Canada, although the Timex brand is sold worldwide due to its ability to capitalize on its strong brand image and reputation for quality.

One of the most successful and important features available on many Timex watches is the Indiglo backlight system. Indiglo is a brand name of Indiglo Corporation, solely owned by Timex for licensing purposes. Timex electroluminescent lamps, branded Indiglo, were introduced in 1992 in the Ironman watch line. They were an immediate success. The Indiglo lamp uniformly lights the surface of the Timex’s watch dials in a manner that makes the dial read very easily in many different light settings. In some newer watches the Indiglo backlight only lights up the numbers, rather than the entire LCD display, which is achieved by means of a specialized film that inverts the LCD transmissivity.

Today, Timex Group products are manufactured in the Far East and in Switzerland often based on technology that continues to be developed in the United States and in Germany. With a large and varied line of watches, Timex has the style for everyone. From the locker room to the board room, there is a great Timex style time-piece for you.

The digital was easy to read.

The strap is entirely too long, unless you have gorilla wrists, but five minutes with a razor knife fixed that.

I purchased this watch at another retailer, but I thought I would mention a few things. The watch has Indiglo backlight in which the whole face lights up in a blue-green color so that you see silhouettes of the hands and numbers. The digital display inversely lights up (the numbers light up rather than the whole display). I've found the watch to decently comfortable to wear, though because the straps are simply held in and swivel on the pins, it tends to rotate around my wrist rather than stay in one spot. Also, the acrylic window just barely sticks out above the bezel, so it's relatively easy to scratch and scuff by accident. Lastly, the watch that I have ticks much louder than I expected - at arm's length I can hear the tick of the second hand.

My first Expedition is well over 10 years old and still works perfectly. Bought this watch because it is more stylish, has more features, and looks like a more expensive watch. It runs great, very functional, and not as loud as other reviews have indicated. Good buy for the money. Luminous hands and Indiglo nightlight are key reasons as well, and they both work as expected.

Nice looking watch that I wear all weeklong. Its cheap enough that I dont worry about scratches on the watch face. Watchband is very comfortable, even after 16 hrs of wearing it.

The main reason I bought the watch was for the rubber strap since I wear my watch when working outside in the summer and leather bands degrade badly due to sweat. This watch fills the bill for that. Maybe it's just me but I have an extremely hard time with the digital settings. Instructions are less than clear and I still haven't figured out how to get the alarm turned off. I have to leave the watch in another room at night so the alarm doesn't wake me in the middle of the night. I'll keep trying to figure it out. The digital display is so small it's difficult to see the icons. Maybe it's because I'm an old guy.

I bought this watch over a month ago and been very happy with it. It is comfortable, has kept excellent time, and has a lot of features. A couple of reviewers have complained that the watch ticks very loudly. Either I am going deaf or Timex has fixed the problem because I have no such issue.

Now why I gave this watch 4 stars instead of 5. The watch has an attractive face, but the numerals do not contrast enough against the background, making it hard to read in certain low light scenarios even with the indiglo light activated. But this is not enough of a problem to give the watch an unfavorable rating. The directions/instruction manual leave a lot to be desired. For the most part you have to tinker with the watch and figure it out on your own.

Anyhow, I would buy this watch again and recommend it.

Update (Jan 15): this review was originally prepared when this was a sub-$40 watch. Apparently it is out of production, and the price has crept up on the remaining items. So: the comments about price that follow are less relevant that when I first wrote them in 2011.

Original review:

...andyou really can't go wrong with at this price.

Very similar to the blue-faced Timex T49744 Watch.

The band is flexible and soft, a great choice if avoid metal bands the way I avoid them! The resin band allows you wear it comfortably loose, and still remain in place on your wrist. There is a notch in the band retainer loop that mates to a raised portion at the end of the band, so the band retainer won't slide.

The analog face is large and easy to discern even if you wear reading glasses.

The second digital time zone, alarm and stopwatch functions are fairly intuitive (and the included instructions are clear).

The Indiglo lighting is nice and bright in dim light.

At this price, if it gets banged up in demanding environments, you won't have any heartache if you need to replace it.

A very good watch for the price. I wish the hands were a little bigger so they'd be easier to see in the dark, but the Indiglo pretty much takes care of that. The last Timex I had was similar to this, but it had a rotating bezel. It's a nice feature, but it wasn't one-way, so it was of limited use and I don't miss it. The digital display is great; one of the big reasons why I bought this. The strap is entirely too long, unless you have gorilla wrists, but five minutes with a razor knife fixed that.

All nit-picking aside, I'd recommend this to anybody looking for a perfectly serviceable watch with extra features that won't set you back a bunch of money. And you don't have to take it off to wash your car, your dog, or yourself.
