I've owned a number of incarnations of the Timex Ironman over the years, and I was a bit disappointed in this one.Useful new features: * Golf scorekeeper (I don't play golf, so I can't say how well this works, but I assume some will find it handy). * Occasion timer (I can't figure a use for this myself, but, as with the golf above, it's probably useful for some). * Three alarms - each with a different tone. * The ability to turn off certain modes so that you only have to cycle through the ones you actually use. E.g., if you don't use the golf function, you can turn it off and never have to see it. * Flix function. When you set the Indiglo to "night" mode (same as previous models - hold the Indiglo button until it beeps), you can turn it on by flicking your wrist. You have to snap your wrist pretty quickly, so you look like you're shaking down a thermometer, but it's handy when it's dark and you only have one hand free (such as when driving). What I don't like about this model compared to many previous ones are the following: * Too thick - this watch is 5/8" thick. That may not sound like a lot until you see it. It's sometimes hard to get shirt cuffs over it. * Indiglo is a bit weak. The watch is hard to see in twilight - the black background with light numbers only shows up well in bright light, and the weak Indiglo only helps in darkness. * The alarm tones are way too quiet. I've slept through them twice in the three weeks I've owned it, and this never happened with any of my previous models. Other things that I wish Timex would have changed on all models long ago: * The Indiglo doesn't stay on long enough in "night" mode. Five seconds would be much more useful than three. * Why can't the "night" mode be turned on or off permanently? "Night" mode turns itself off after a few hours, which is frustrating. * The alarm tones turn themselves off too quickly. They should beep for a least a minute if they are going to be an effective alarm clock. Best of all would be for the user to be able to set how long the tones beep for. Overall, it's not a bad watch. It's got some neat new features, but has also taken some steps back in some other areas. That, combined with the ungainly thickness, make it less than ideal. It's not so bad that I wanted to bother returning it, but if I had it to do over, I probably wouldn't purchase it again.

Too Damned Big,
This review is from: Timex Men's T5F841 Ironman 30-Lap Shock Resistant Watch (Watch)
Functionality of the watch is fantastic...and the ability to "hide" undesired functions keeps you from having to scroll through a bunch of functionality that you don't care about (like "Occassions") and get to important functionality (like "Golf") quicker. My complaint about the watch is that it's "HUGE" and looks stupid on your wrist.

Basically, whatever you need a watch for, this does it and does it easily. I've noted that the fifth button really makes it easier to use all the functions on a watch, and the functions on this watch seem intuitively arranged. I'm going to read the manual someday but I haven't yet.The overall color scheme is actually very sharp looking, better in person than the picture. But, yes, its a big boy - more like a fat boy. It took me a couple of days to get used to it. But hey I'm a big boy too so it looks fine on me. In addition to the shock absorption, the bigger size also buys you total waterproofing even when the buttons are pushed under water. I will say though that while the black face and white numerals look cool, they are a bit harder to read. Readability is fine in fairly bright light and when you need the backlight, but in other light you may need to take a closer look.

This watch is awesome. I like it a lot better than my standard timex ironman. My other timex has a velcro band and i wasnt thinking about it at the time but velcro bands start to stink after a while. So now i only wear this one. Its features are great especially the FLIX. Very lightweight, durable and comfortable. I highly recommend this watch to anyone, especially to runners. You wont be dissapointed.

This is a great watch. It is accurate, as you would expect, good looking and easy to set up and use. It has many features I do not use like keeping golf scores, but for running, it works really well. I especially like the band, which is stronger than ones I have had. I tend to be hard on watches and this one stands up to the test.

Have had it for months now. Reversed display is actually easier to view. Size and weight are just right and is comfortable to wear all day and night. Easy to use features such as timers, alarms, and reminders. Flexible time and date display options. The night mode feature (flick to turn on Indiglo light) is convenient but needs a good flick (wouldn't want it coming on for every little movement but could've been calibrated better).

A good watch for the money,

The Good: This watch is very fuctional with a big readout. I found it easy to use.The Bad: It's hard to read in direct light and light itself is pretty dim. My biggest gripe with this watch is the band. The little "loop" that the excess band goes into has a big notch in it that secures it to the band. That's good for keeping it in place while exercising, but in the beginning I had issues removing it. Felt like I was always going to break it. Found out if you squeeze the sides of the loop it releases the pressure and makes it easier to remove. What I would have done differently: The blue is a lighter metallic blue than I anticipated - I would buy this watch in silver if I had a "do over."

Great watch for the price! Has all the features I need, and then some. Easy to operate so that it doesn't take a PhD to figure out how to operate the different functions. Indiglo light is perfect! if you are tough on watches like I am, I strongly suggest this watch!!!

I ordered the watch on line, and since there were no dimensions listed, or alternate views of the product, I was not able to tell how ridiculously thick the watch face really is. It's a nice looking watch, too bad it is so clunky and weird looking. I had to return it and try another model. I did try the indiglo button when I first got it, and the illumination was very weak. Nothing like other Timex watches I've owned in the past. Very disappointed in it.

Over the years I have owned quite a few sports watches from very expensive to very reasonable. For bang for the buck, I have always liked G-Shock watches because I am a big guy and look better with a "chunky" watch. One day I walking thru my local walmart and I caught a glimpse of all the new timex watches. For me, in the past, I always thought the timex were plasticy and cheap looking until I saw the shock ironman line. Not only is this watch more comfortable than any of my G-Shocks, it's also as stylish and rugged. I have taken it in the pool, at the beach, biking, to work...etc. and not a scratch. I always had to adjust the time on the casio after a few months, but not the timex. It's alot more accurate than any of my casio's. If you are looking for a rugged, just plain cool looking watch to beat up with day to day life, get the timex shock. A definately much better deal pricewise and value wise than the G-Shock in my opinion. Let's see how the timex holds up over time....Not sure i'll ever use the golf feature but neat none the less. |
