There's a Brit saying: "Pay a cheap price, buy twice". Basically false economy rears it's ugly head - for example: you buy a cheap watch to try and save money only to find the watch broke after a short while and you having to buy ANOTHER watch to replace it.

There's a Brit saying: "Pay a cheap price, buy twice". Basically false economy rears it's ugly head - for example: you buy a cheap watch to try and save money only to find the watch broke after a short while and you having to buy ANOTHER watch to replace it.

This isn't the case with this watch. I opted for a sports watch because I was fed up to the bleedin' eyeballs with having chain link watches breaking all the time on me (and not all of them were that cheap either.) I also wanted a watch to go jogging with as well, so I opted for this beauty because of its price and its countdown timer.

I was not disappointed, it is a lot smaller than I thought it will be, which is a bonus as it is disheartneing to go jogging with what feels like a leadbrick swinging from your arm, but it still feels solid and compact all the time - what I am trying to say is that this Timex doesn't 'feel' cheap.

I wasn't expecting much with the watch but I am very please with it. I initially bought it as a cheap knockaround watch but I wear it all the time now!

The options are also fairly easy to use, stopwatch, countdown (upto an hour I think), alarm, etc. The illumination is also very good when in dark places.

I have had the watch one month so I cannot guarantee it will last a long time but so far I have no problems with it at all. Well worth the price though, and wouldn't swap this watch for most of the more expensive watches I have had.

There are cheaper watches out there, but for the extra pennies (or cents) it is worth getting this.

I got this to replace my Timex Ironman. It's mostly good, but there are a few things that might have diussuaded me from by it if I had known about them and if there had been a better alternative:

1. It beeps every time you push a button (except for the Indiglo button). On the Ironman that's only the case when the hourly chime is on.

2. The countdown timer doesn't save the last entry. For example, if you set it to count down 5 minutes and stop it with one minute left, the timer just stays set to one minute. If you want to count another five minutes, you have to reset it. Not a huge deal but kind of anoying.

One nice difference is the Indiglo button - instead of just staying on while you hold it (unless you hold it down for a few seconds), one push lights the face for several seconds. The buttons are also a lot easier to push.

--- Update ---
After three years, the resin band started to split, and I had to replace the watch (or continue using duct tape). The little tie thing that holds the band together broke way before that, and I had to use rubber bands and twist ties to hold it together. I'm removing a star from my rating due to the relatively short lifespan of the band.

I am student in a wilderness school. This watch does every thing I need it to do. It cost under $20 so it is a great value for what I paid for it. I use it when I am swimming, running, or out on a field exercise without a problem. It will not sing and dance for you, but if you want an affordable and reliable watch with good durability, this watch is the way to go.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not water-resistant at 30 feet, much less 50 meters!, August 11, 2009
By
This review is from: Timex Men's T5H091 1440 Sports Digital Watch (Watch)
Picked up this watch at the last minute before a sailing/ snorkeling/ scuba trip since my usual Timex Ironman had just died, and the price for the 1440 was only 1/2 to 1/3 that of the Ironman I usually buy. While this watch was only rated water-resistant to 50 meters/ 165 feet (unlike the 100+ meters for the Ironman) I didn't expect it to be an issue since as a recreational diver I never dive that deep.
However, I got what I paid for - the 1440 couldn't even handle a half hour in shallow (< 30 foot) water on my first dive - and what's even worse, it was a dive that ended up being more snorkeling than diving; by the time I was back on the boat the face was so badly fogged that it was impossible to read the watch, and it hasn't cleared to any significant degree in the days since.
The watch is getting returned.

I want a watch to tell time when I go to the gym or play sports. For the price at Amazon, it really can't be beat even if it dies in a year or two. It has all the standard chrono, alarm, and timer functions. I would prefer the timer to retain the value I set after it counts down instead of having to set it every time.

The one major reason that I took a star off is that the watch does NOT have a green face like the picture. Some watches, like an Armitron a friend has, glow green depending on the angle. I thought I was getting similar technology here but the dial face is just black numbers on greyish silver white background. When illuminated, it turns blue; it never has the green face. I would have returned it had it cost more, but it is not worth it here.

I am surprised no one has yet mentioned this. Maybe I got a lemon?

1.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says, with limitations., July 29, 2010
This review is from: Timex Men's T5H091 1440 Sports Digital Watch (Watch)
Yes I know this is a CHEAP watch. But all I wanted was the basic Countdown Timer Function. Yes this does have a Countdown Timer. The problem however is that once you start your count down, you can not quickly get back to orignal start time if there is a false start. For example, lets day you need to restart it (like restarting the stopwatch / chronograph function) I expected just to "RESTART" to the pre-set Count Down time I programmed before the race. HOWEVER, with this watch, you can not 'reset to zero like the chronograph. Once the Countdown Begins, you need to finish this, OR go back to set-up mode to actually Re-Program a new Count down start time by re-configuring a NEW START TIME. So using this as a count down for example a sailing / windsurf RACE START, and if there is a false start and you need to re-start to another 5 min 00 sec start time, you CANT just hit RESTART. Since the time now reads 4 Min 53 Sec, you cant press 1 or 2 or 3 buttons to reset to 5 min 00 sec. You actually need to RE-PROGRAM using the Mode/SET/Save command. Truly disappointing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great watch for the price, February 14, 2009

I bought this watch specifically to wear while working out. I particularly like that the stopwatch feature is quite large (large second display up to 30 minutes). For stretching exercises this allows easy reading.

Also, the Indigo feature works better than other Timex watches I've owned. The light stays on for a couple of seconds and then slowly fades out. So for checking time/stopwatch in low light you have time to read the numbers.

The watch is stylish and for the price you can't go wrong.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outlasted my expectations, December 7, 2010
This review is from: Timex Men's T5H091 1440 Sports Digital Watch (Watch)
I bought my 1440 as a work watch for around $10 6 or 7 years ago. Didn't expect much from a $10 watch so I've been amazed by it's durability and functionality. Still the original battery, all functions still work great, and the indiglo has always been and still is a great feature.
The only minor gripe I have is the wrist strap started cracking about 2 years ago and has now recently broke apart. I'm still using it though! Black electrical tape matches the band perfectly so I Frankensteined it back together.
All in all great quality for such a low price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product at a great price!, October 30, 2010

I needed a watch for running and didn't know where to start. I've always been a Timex fan since my youth and decided to check them out. I liked this watch and decided to go for it. It's only 15.00.
It looks great and you cannot even feel it on your arm while running. It keeps great time and the functions/features are easy to understand and use. I use the stopwatch feature to time my runs and everything has worked out great so far. You can "freeze" your time at a particular spot in your run, so you can take the time to look at it and evaluate your pace, but the actual stopwatch is still running in the background, so you just click back over and keep on goin'.
It has two time zone features and the stop watch, both of which come in handy. The light works very well and cuts off automatically after a short while.
It's the best 15.00 I've ever spent, no need to pay 60.00 for a simple watch to run with. I'm sure I'll upgrade one day to a GPS watch with all the bells and whistles but this one is great. I even find myself wearing it to work during the week.

I bought this watch because the display is large and easy to read. It is not green, but black on gray. The light is slightly greenish blue. The watch is large, and can interfere with a tight shirt cuff. Otherwise, it is fine. Have not tried the water resistance.
