5.0 out of 5 stars Great Watch
I just got this watch. If you are looking for a watch with a lot of features this really isn't the watch for you. I liked it from the first time I tried it on. It was comfortable and simple to use. 1.0 out of 5 stars Did not stand the test of time
I've had this watch for a little over 2 years, but the "Indiglo" feature just died. So, now I can't tell what time it is in the dark. I've had other Ironman watches w/ Indiglo, which lasted for 6 years (until the battery died). The thing I like about it the most is its easy read face, the comfort of the watch on my wrist, and the fact that it is solar powered! This is definitly a watch for people who just don't want to replace batteries all the time and a watch that basically just tells time.

5.0 out of 5 stars You Get What You Pay For, September 4, 2009
By

This review is from: Timex Men's T5J641 Ironman Solar Power SHOCK Resin Strap Watch (Watch)
The old adage holds true: You get what you pay for. This Timex Ironman Solar/Shock watch, purchased through Amazon, came out of its original Timex factory box with a $100.00 price tag attached. Now, you won't pay that much for it at Amazon, but even if you did, you wouldn't be short changed. This watch is really a crafted, precision piece, and in both a visual and tactile sense it's a pleasure to wear and use. I've own any number of Timex's and Casios, and this one wins hands down and going away!

I won't go into the watch's features as they're well described by Amazon except to note that the watch can be set in either the 12/24 hour format. Two other points are worth mentioning. First, don't be put off by the 44 cm size of the watch, on the wrist it actually appears little different than a regular (40 cm) men's Timex. This is because (even though in the photo it doesn't appear that way) the pushers are built into the body of the watch, and don't extend well out beyond the casing as they do on many Timex models. The second point I'd make, is that with the shock protection, the watch does sit higher (15 cm) on the wrist than most. It's nothing drastic, and I actually like the look, but you might have to forego buttoning the cuff on a long sleeved shirt. All things considered, this is a great watch, and I'm most satisfied with my purchase!

1.0 out of 5 stars Ok, if you don't put it in water, July 5, 2009
This review is from: Timex Men's T5J641 Ironman Solar Power SHOCK Resin Strap Watch (Watch)
I've owned this watch for 15 months.
Worked OK, good features, fair accuracy.
But Waterskied with it last week.
It's now dead after one run, with moisture on inside of lens. :-(

This NEVER happend to me with Casio Water resistant watches.

So I would say it's not water or shock resistant.

1.0 out of 5 stars NOT water resistant, August 27, 2010

I bought this watch a few months ago. I never submerged it in water I only wore it in the shower. It started to collect water inside the lense. I contacted Timex and they sent me another one with no problem. I got the a brand new one 3 weeks ago and the same thing. It was shock resistant and kept the time great. If they could fix the water resistant watch it would be a great watch. I loved everything about it: fetures, weight, comfort, durability, and look. But if it's allergic to water, then I have no use for it. Timex has good customer service and normally has great watches. I guess this is the exception to the rule. Really disapointing.

Bought this June 2009 and used it mainly for timing runs and swims. It lasted for a while but now there is condensation/water inside the display.

4.0 out of 5 stars Indiglo is weak, battery indicator annoying; otherwise, great!, February 26, 2011

This review is from: Timex Men's T5J641 Ironman Solar Power SHOCK Resin Strap Watch (Watch)
I've had this watch for a few years now. I had gotten a G-Shock for Christmas (I got what I'd asked for) and was very disappointed that Casio's understanding of "lap time" was very different from the rest of the world's. So I returned the G-Shock and got this baby instead.

Pros:
--The time, date, and day are much bigger and easier to read than on the G-Shock (Casios always have big "features" that take up all the really valuable real estate on the face of the watch).
--Shock resistance: This used to be the G-Shock's most compelling selling point. Since the Timex is made to the same ISO standard, Casio's advantage has disappeared.
--Lap time: It's designed for people like me, who run and swim and bike a lot and want to know about changes in performance over the course of a workout or a race. You can scroll through all your laps to see exactly how one lap compares to the others.
--Water resistance: This is peculiar. After lots of swimming in the 3 years I've had this watch--and yes, I use the buttons!--I haven't had any trouble with fogging. The 200-meter rating means that the buttons are sealed against leakage when pressed under water. It's a mystery to me why any watch labeled "Ironman Triathlon" could lack that type of protection. All of these should be usable by all triathletes, and triathletes use their watches in the water. Wild, right? But again, this model is good in that regard.
--Styling: It's a much more attractive watch on the wrist. It is substantial without being quite as bulky as the G-Shock (which seems to be designed to be bulky for bulky's sake). The Timex is handsome and is clearly designed for toughness.
--Solar technology: I've owned several solar analogs (Pulsars), which I absolutely love. You can cram one of those mamas under a cushion for months and it will still be running on the solar power it had collected in its capacitor. But the Timex people made the mistake of putting a charge indicator on the face of the watch. Dumb move. Now I'm anxious all the time because it's never "full." And I live in Texas, and I often leave my watches in the window when I'm not wearing them. I should never be concerned about charge! This is probably faulty psychology on my part, but designers get paid to overcome consumers' faulty psychology, right?
--Indiglo is worlds better than any other watch illumination technology. Usually. Which brings us to the ...

Cons:
--The battery charge and Indiglo complaints are related: If you deign to press the Indiglo button, the light produced is as weak as the illumination found on most other brands. Far weaker than the Indiglo I've grown to know and love. Then the charge indicator reflects the immediate depletion of the battery, just because you splurged energy on 4 seconds of trying to see what time it is in the dark. The charge indicator does bounce back after a few seconds, though, even in the dark. They really shouldn't have put the charge indicator on this thing. People can assume that if they wear their solar watch where there is light (sunshine or otherwise), the watch will not falter. Grant me that blissful ignorance.

Actually, that's it for the cons. Doing it all over again, I'd still get the Timex for all the reasons listed in the pros; but the lack of illumination and my possibly irrational concern that the battery isn't charging to capacity would prevent me from getting the solar model. I would opt for the traditional version instead.

1.0 out of 5 stars Took a licking and quit ticking, August 21, 2010

This review is from: Timex Men's T5J641 Ironman Solar Power SHOCK Resin Strap Watch (Watch)
I owned this watch for 18 months. It started to fog up on the inside several months ago, sometimes to the point of being unable to read the face. This past week the Indiglo and chime have both quit completely and the watch has begun to freeze up intermittently. I am very disappointed in this watch as I expected it to last 7+ years as the other Ironman watches I have owned did. For the $99 I paid at the time, I expected more than 18 mos.

so far so good!!! I like the watch and have used the chronograph multiple times. I also like the fact that it is solar powered and won't have to worry about opening the watch case to replace the battery.
I also like the time zone and multiple alarm features.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy! Water damage, twice!, July 30, 2011
This review is from: Timex Men's T5J641 Ironman Solar Power SHOCK Resin Strap Watch (Watch)
This was my third Timex watch. I bought it brand NEW and within three weeks it had water damaged. The screen was permanently foggy. I sent the watch off to be repaired by the Timex (TG Service Center). After waiting a couple of months, I finally received a NEW watch (old watch couldn't be fixed). Within a couple of weeks, the same thing happened to the SECOND new watch!! Water damage and foggy screen! I never swam with the watch or did anything "extreme" with it. This watch is J U N K! Also, the back light only works whenever it wants to. J U N K! STAY AWAY!!!
