5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent inexpensive thermometers
Timex TX1001 6.5-Inch Tube ThermometerTimex TX1003 10.62-Inch Tube Thermometer

I needed several basic thermometers (and I didn't want to pay a fortune).
I ordered 2 6.5" and 2 10.62". They are accurate (less than 1/2 degree difference) and the 10.62"s are particularly easy to read. Excellent for the price, free shipping (combined with some other...

1.0 out of 5 stars this doesn't work - don't bother with it
I bought this thermometer recently. It doesn't show above 68 (even when in the 80s) and below 60. Have tried everything and nothing gets it to show correct temperature. Also, difficult to read. 3 times bigger than my little thermometer of >20 years that broke and yet harder to read. Cost more to buy a padded envelope to return it than the cost of the thermometer (it...

I bought 5 of these to settle the too hot vs. too cold arguments in a large office space. They all came out of the box at the same temp so that was a good sign. Great deal for the < than 2 buck a piece price...

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent thermometer; here's how to calibrate it., November 21, 2010
This review is from: Timex TX1001 6.5-Inch Tube Thermometer (Kitchen)
Considering the really low price, this is a great thermometer for indoor use. However, to read it, you need to get fairly close and look straight on. If you're looking for an inexpensive outdoor thermometer to put right outside a window, then a 6-inch or larger dial thermometer is much better. Inexpensive dial thermometers use a bi-metallic coil, and they are accurate within a couple of degrees F.

As far as accuracy of this liquid thermometer, it may be off by a couple of degrees, but you can calibrate it by just putting the bulb and bottom half of the thermometer in a big bowl of stirred-up ice cubes in water for a few minutes. There is a red line on the thermometer at 32F/0C that is labeled "FREEZE." If the red column is above the line, then you'll just subtract that difference in degrees from any reading when you use the thermometer. If you are below the red FREEZE line, then add the difference to your readings.

It is possible to slide the bulb and tube up or down in the retainers in order to exactly match up the reading and the marked freeze line. However, the retainers hold the tube pretty firmly, so beware that you could break the tube or break off the bulb if you do this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Item as expected., November 3, 2011

This review is from: Timex TX1001 6.5-Inch Tube Thermometer (Kitchen)
I bought this thermometer to measure the temperature of my garage during the winter. This is a no-frills thermometer, but that is what should be expected for the low price. Item was accurate within 1 degree when compared with my digital thermostat. Viewing angle for reading the temperature is not very wide, but easily readable when view straight on. The mounting screw was missing from my package, but almost any nail or screw will complete the task.

In conclusion, this is not a fancy thermometer, but if all you are wanting is a simple thermometer then this item will complete the task.

4.0 out of 5 stars Needs to be calibrate before use., September 26, 2011

This review is from: Timex TX1001 6.5-Inch Tube Thermometer (Kitchen)
Thermometer looks solid. BEWARE, CALIBRATION is needed before use.

I ordered two of these thermometer at the same time and notice that one of them was off by 5 degrees Celsius. I was about to return the item when I noticed that the glass tube (i.e thermometer) inside the plastic holder can move up and down. This shifts all the measurements off by several degrees. I had to adjust the glass tube inside the plastic holder to match the temperature in my room, which was measured by another thermometer. Finally, I glued the glass tube onto the plastic holder to prevent it from moving in the future. Maverick Industries should have done this before shipping to the customers (minus one star).

Installation was also a little difficult to figure out because the screw head was too big to fit into the hole on the back. I soon figured out that you need to take apart the little clip on the back of the plastic holder that holds the screw in place and then screw that part into the wall first. Finally, you simply attach the thermometer to the clip which is already screwed into the wall.

Besides the little calibration process and the lack of proper installation instructions, its a great product and you can't beat the price.

Also, difficult to read. 3 times bigger than my little thermometer of >20 years that broke and yet harder to read. Cost more to buy a padded envelope to return it than the cost of the thermometer (it came in an envelope not a box). Also, as per other reviews the screw that come with it to hang it up is too big - after all this time you think they'd fix that problem also. Not worth the money - not worth being given free (in my opinion). It just doesn't work.

I bought two thermometers from Amazon recently. The first, made of wood and by a company called Taylor, was a disappointment. This one is much nicer. It's made of white plastic with a very modern and clean design. If Apple computers made thermometers instead of the iMac, it might look like this. Easy to read and with both F and C scales, it looks very nice and even includes a mounting screw. One thing though, it WILL swing in the wind and must be secured by say, epoxy glue, if you intend to expose it to direct winds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Takes a Licking? No, But One Heck of a Value!, January 9, 2012

First, let me say this is a fantastic value. I needed a thermometer for the cube farm at work to back up my claims about the office temperature problems to the maintenance staff, and I didn't want to spend too much in case it grew legs and walked away one day. This was less than two bucks. It's plenty accurate. Let me explain why.

A glass bulb thermometer works based on the thermal expansion properties of the red alcohol in the bulb, and that stuff expands and contracts with perfect consistency whether you paid $2 or $50 for it. More cost means a larger device (easier to read), or prettier, but they work the same way.

I have to believe when they make these things they calibrate them, but it's a long and sometimes rough boat ride from China, and those longshoremen can beat the heck out of the containers they're in. Then they're roughed up on the way to the Amazon warehouse, then again while filling your order, and finally during the shipment to our house. Bottom line is that they take a licking, and even through they're a Timex, they may not tick properly because the glass bulb has shifted in the case and this will cause a temperature offset.

It's easy to calibrate with an ice water bath, and if you do this, you'll have a fine thermometer. I'm lucky that the one I purchased was off by less than a degree, and it was fairly rigid in the housing. If it tens to move easily then apply a dab of glue or hot-melt glue somewhere along the glass bulb to hold it in place.
