I bought this to replace an electronic thermometer that became frozen in the cold weather. This thermometer works well, is easy to read, and hasn't frozen in the cold weather.

I bought two of these to check consistency of temperature in various parts of our new house. Before I deployed them, I set them side-by-side near the thermostat and all three agreed. Then I moved these to two different rooms, which confirmed my belief (and convinced my husband) that we had a few cold rooms. We've replaced a few windows, reinsulated the crawl space and set the furnace blower to run all the time; voila - comfortable house!

I ordered the "Timex TX 1002 9-inch Tube Thermometer" to monitor temperatures in my home. Some rooms are uncomfortably warm and others cool in the house. My wife sometimes complains that it is too cold in rooms where she works and my son echos the comment in his area. So, I wished to learn whether we had a perception problem or an actual temperature distribution situation that could be fixed. I ordered four thermometers in order to compare rooms. First, of course, I kept all four devices in the same room for several days and observed their readings regularly. All four provided the same reading every time I checked - that is quality manufacturing. My little test provided the details I needed. I discovered a heat distribution problem and fixed it. Now each of the areas is more comfortable to the occupants (except my sun room on a sunny day, which is naturally warmer during the day). I like several features of this Timex product. 1. It is easy to read the temperature. The numbers are large and the mercury clear. 2. The multi-position bracket allowed me to mounts it with ease 3. The readings are consistent and accurate. 4. It has a two year warranty. I recommend the Timex TX1002 9-inch tube thermometer.

Settle arguments about the AC and Heat in your house,

After replacing various parts of our AC system this summer, we were still dissatisfied with the "coolness" we were getting in various rooms. I bought 5 of these inexpensive thermometers and spread them out to prove to my husband (and the AC guy) that I wasn't just crazy when I said different rooms were different temperatures. We had variances of almost 5 degrees from room to room. With these cheap thermometers in place, we were finally able to get the AC balanced properly so everyone is happy. Even in a new house you can have these issues, and resolving them will not only improve the environment, it helped lower our electric bill also. For a $25 investment, I have saved a load of cash this summer. These thermometers are super-light so you can move them around and just hang them on whatever is convenient for a quick reading---a doorknob, cabinet latch, whatever. Throw them in a drawer and grab when needed, this is a "tool" everyone could use at some point or another.

Taking the temp of the Timex thermometer,

We have one of the electronic weather stations that pick up the weather from the airport broadcast signal. Since I am a gardener, I don't really want to know the temp at the airport, but rather what it is in my back yard. Don't get me wrong, the weather stations are great though. It is really nice to have something that doesn't require batteries I have to say though...
First off, this thermometer is not small. I was a bit surprised when I got it out of the box. As it turns out, I really like its' size, since it makes it easier to read once it is mounted outside of your window. It has both Fahrenheit and Celsius temp scales. I have found it highly accurate when compared to my smart phone local weather temp and our weather station temps. One thing I didn't like was the way the bottom thermometer bracket had a molded shape in it that would seat in the metal mounting bracket. This was to prevent the thermometer from rotating in the wind. However, there is a somewhat narrow "field of view" for reading the result scale, which didn't match up to their preset plastic notches. Simple fix was to shave them off with a knife and it does not move in the wind. Note, mount in where there is not direct sunlight as that will give falsely elevated readings. All in all, for the price, it's a nice and accurate piece of kit for your backyard.

I wanted a cheap thermometer with a good degree of accuracy. this is it. you can read the temperature within about a half of a degree. the measurement also matches up nicely with my watch that reads temp. good purchase.

Disappointed..,

Many other reviews said that these thermometers were consistent but that was not my experience. Sitting side by side, the temperature readings varied by an average of 8 degrees in various places. Two of them were usually about 2 degrees apart, but the other was normally about 6 degrees from the others. Very disappointed and will be returning.

I wanted a reasonably accurate thermometer for normal outdoor temperature range in NY. A range of 32-100 would be nice. This thermometer (I bought 2) will not do it. The glass tube is attached to the plastic with 2 small rubber washers. It is held with friction. If there was any glue it was gone. It can be easily slid up or down and will probably be in some random position when you receive it. As you slide it, you change the reading as there are no marks on the glass itself.
If it was just that design, I could accept it. I planned to set it at 32 by putting it into icewater and sliding it into position. When I did that and took it up to room temperature (80F), it was off by 10 degrees (reading 70). If I adjust it to 80 and put it back into the ice bath, it reads 40. I compared it to a food thermometer which read properly at both temperatures. If I was interested in a single temperature, I might get some use out of it, like inside a freezer, but it is delicate and likely to break in that situation and contaminate food, so it is not good for that either. It is meant to be attached to a window frame or somewhere outside and it cannot give an accurate reading over normal seasonal range. I suppose you could make a new label but then you are making your own thermometer. The plastic is not firmly attached to the metal frame either and I suspect it can fall out in the wind. Really, the mercury thermometer has been around since 1714, this is not rocket science. 10 degrees variation over a 48 degree range is about 20%. That is completely useless. Do not buy this product.

Cheap and inaccurate,
By WncAmy (North Carolina) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Timex TX1002 9-Inch Tube Thermometer with Metal Bracket (Electronics)
This item was poorly made and did not work. I understand that you get what you pay for, and the cheaply made aspect wouldn't be so bad... if it had worked at all. No matter what, it seemed to think it was in the 60's in my house. Which isn't accurate, *in the middle of summer* when my thermostat says it is between 70-80 in here.
I bought three of these - two for different areas inside the house, and one for outside. I returned them all, and was only credited for two. I'm not sure why they did not see fit to give me a full credit. |
