Edited review 1/7/14: 4* to 3*
I'm going to have to downgrade this to a 3 star now because I just found a fairly major flaw on this watch: it's able to do lap splits but it isn't able to show each split time! Argh. What's the point? So the watch can keep count how many laps I'm doing? The manual doesn't mention anything about split time review. At least my old simpler Timex Expedition was able to give me a 1-2 second glance at how I'm doing with each lap time. So now I do some arithmetic in my head as I sprint.

This is my first HRM so I did a hefty amount of research into my purchase. I wanted a watch that can let me know how much I can/should be training at because sometimes I can't tell if I'm pushing too much to too little so I'll fatigue too fast or not.

Certain features I must have transitioning from my regular workout watch to a HRM:
-interval/countdown timer helpful for interval training
-stopwatch with lap splits
-(night) light

When I started researching, I compared and ruled out Garmin and Suunto because of the cost, a little high end and techy for my purposes (I feel like if I wanted a watch for GPS stuff, I'd look into these). I really like Polar's design of the FT models which had the minimum of what I wanted but none of these models have a countdown timer! The RS model line begins to have the timer but those screens are larger. Most of these watches also have the online trainer site to help maintain training logs if you're preparing for a race or really trying to improve your times.

Now that I know how to use my Timex heartrate monitor I love it. Several of my friends have other brands and have been displeased with the results. This monitor is definitely worth the money.

I use this to keep track of calories burned during workouts. It is very easy to use for someone who goes to a class to workout and doesn't have a ton of time to get it started prior to the class starting. The only tricky part is that in the instructions they didn't make it very clear that to start the timer for the calories burned you needed to have the watch in Chrono mode. It only said it in the small print. Once I figured that out, it was easy.

Because you program in your age, this watch/chest strap shows more accurately the number of calories burned than the monitor on the exercise equipment. It shows that I burn almost 1.5 times as many calories than exercise equipment (elliptical, bike, stair climber) which gave me greater incentive to keep working out. The chest strap is comfortable and the watch is easy to use (since I realized you have to be in chrono mode to reset)
Have recommended to friends!

I was trying to decide between the Polar and this timex in similar price ranges and decided to go with timex since I could change the batteries myself. I am very happy with my timex. I have not had to replace the battery and it works great. When I work out at the gym and use the treadmill, the heart rate on the treadmill matches the heart rate on this watch, so I know that it is accurate. I really love the calorie counter. I burn so many more calories than the treadmill tells me - which makes sense because how does the treadmill know how hard my heart is working right? Very pleased with this purchase.

I am reviewing this product's comfort. I never actually used this HRM for a real workout session. It was given to me for Mother's Day. I already had a HRM that just needed a new battery. But, I did try on this Timex HRM and fiddle with its functions. The chest strap was EXTREMELY comfortable. It was honestly as if I were not even wearing it. My current HRM is a NB N4. That HRM has more stiff resin, and the elastic strap is narrow when compared with this Timex. This Timex strap has a fairly wide, soft elastic band - not at all too wide. The extra width seems to hold it in place better without it needing to be tight, which is what made it so much more comfortable than my current HRM. I almost kept it based on comfort alone. I only returned it because I thought of what other fun Mother's Day gift I might get instead. ;)

This is an easy-to-use heart rate monitor and it is value priced. I just use the heart rate function for HIIT but there are many more functions available. The instruction book is easy to read and the device is easy to program.

I have recommended this HRM to a number of my Personal Training clients and individuals in my aerobics classes. This is a bulletproof, reliable monitor. Since it has a digital transmitter and receiver, there's no interference from other monitors or from electrical devices, plumbing, or heating system ducts nearby. Easy to set up and use. The instructions are good. You can get useful post-workout summary information or just use the HRM mode.

This is a great item for the money.
