4.0 out of 5 stars Buoys a Blast From the Past
Everyone remembers their hit "Timothy." This album offers most of the tracks from the Buoys' 1971 debut album and then a few. "Give Up Your Guns" is one of the best story songs (along with "Timothy") ever written. Other tracks are solid rockers from this largely overlooked band from the early 1970s.

3.0 out of 5 stars Clarification for Posterity...
A previous poster noted that the writer, Rupert Holmes, said that Timothy was a mule. This is incorrect - Rupert always claimed the song was hinting at cannibalism since his purpose in writing it was to create a song that would be banned, and therefore it would create its own publicity. The record's original label came up with the mule story - which was quickly quashed by...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Buoys "Golden Classics", May 1, 2009

A great cd of recordings from this Wilkes Barre,Pa band. Inspite of having only the one hit, don't stop there if you haven't heard their album which is included on this CD and other really great obscure cuts. The group in some ways sounds a little like the Hollies in some cases. If you like good rare early 70s obscure R&R and/or just like Rare good overlooked music, I definitely recommend the Buoys recordings and later recordings under the name Dakota.

5.0 out of 5 stars Forget Timothy, May 5, 2006

The entire CD has some wonderful gems other than the well known "Timothy" There are upbeat songs, tight harmonies, some sound as if they were just released today. The Buoys rock!

This is incorrect - Rupert always claimed the song was hinting at cannibalism since his purpose in writing it was to create a song that would be banned, and therefore it would create its own publicity. The record's original label came up with the mule story - which was quickly quashed by Holmes when he was interviewed since he refused to play along with the label.

Regardless, as a pop album from the early 70's, this isn't a bad go...

While most folks will remember them for their one hit wonder Timothy, the real gem here is the song Tell Me Heaven Is Here. I originally got this on vinyl in the cut out bin for fifty cents many years ago, upon playing the LP I discovered that the real hit on the album was the song Tell Me Heaven Is Here, with it touching lyrics and short but very soulful guitar solo it easily becomes an addicting tune you will play again and again for many years to come.

4.0 out of 5 stars Late Sixties, Early Seventies Sound..., January 10, 2007

I bought the single of "Timothy" back in... 1970? A great pop song.

This is late Sixties/early Seventies era melodic pop rock. I hear influences like The Left Banke, Wishbone Ash, CSN, America, and maybe a little Nazz.

I listen to 8 or 9 of the songs regularly. If you are a collector of late sixties era pop, I'd say go for it.

I only bought this CD for the song "Timothy". I remember it form the early 70's. I didn't care for the rest of the songs on the CD, but if you want to hear Timothy, it's worth the price.

3.0 out of 5 stars A "tasty" peice of rock arcana (pun intended), November 26, 2004
This review is from: Timothy (Audio CD)
If you listen to the lyrics of the the song "Timothy" it becomes apparant that cannibalism is the subject of this poppy tune. The narrator along with Timothy and Joe get trapped in some mine cave in or something and threatened with starvation, Timothy becomes the main course. After the rescue, the narrator goes into denial of this ethically dubious act asking "Timothy,Where on earth did you go?". Too bad they didnt have fava beans and chianti,eh? The song itself is catchy and overall a solid piece of pop, with the exception of the annoying violin stabs in the chorus.
