Timothy of the Cay, a great book.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Timothy of the Cay (Mass Market Paperback)
Timothy of the Cay is a prequel-sequel of The Cay, both written by Theodore Taylor. To appreciate this book the most you have to have read The Cay, or know what it's about. The Cay is about this boat that gets torpedoed and how an old, black sailor, named Timothy and a young white boy, named Phillip survive. Timothy of the Cay can be divided into two biographical parts. One is about how Timothy grew up and how he ended up in that boat. The second is about Phillip's life after he alone gets rescued (Timothy had died in the island during a hurricane) from the cay, the little island that they drifted to in their raft after the accident. Anybody who has read and liked The Cay will like this novel. It kind of fills you in on everything you were curious to know. I enjoyed that it was easy to read. It was exciting to learn about Timothy's realistic life because the author kept you interested. Big things came suddenly and filled you with thrill. Little foreshadowing could be done. On Phillip's life after he got rescued too much was wasted on small talk and little things, and few exciting things happened. The reader could also guess some things which made it a lot less intriguing and attracting to read. The atmosphere of Phillip's later life was constant and a little hackneyed, which made it somewhat dull. This is a short paperback which will entertain you and is written in an appealing way. I especially recommend it to people that have read The Cay.

This review is from: Timothy of the Cay (Mass Market Paperback)
I loved it. It was not as good as The Cay. This book is not good to start with if you have not read the first book, The Cay. The book is about events in Timothy's life that we learn about for the first time. It is about an operation Phillip has to take but there is a risk he may die. Will they take the risk? And if they do, what will happen if anything happens to him...And if something happens to him or he does not get his sight back will he ever go back to the Cay?... His dream is to go back to the Cay..... If all those things happen right will he live up to his dream and go back to the Cay? We also learn about Timothy's life. What happened to that boy that made him such a great guy to Philip? What happened in his early years? Hope you found my review helpful.

Timothy of the Cay,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Timothy of the Cay (Hardcover)
The book Timothy of the Cay by Theodore Taylor was an amazing and exiting book. The book is about a blind boy named Phillip that had been stranded on a small cay with a black man named Timothy. Months later Phillip is rescued, but Timothy is not able to come along. Phillip goes on home then is sent to New York were he tries to regain his vision. While Phillip fights to get his vision back Timothy's life story is told.Timothy and Phillip met each other when they floated to shore together after there boat was hit by a torpedo. This was Phillip's only time seeing Timothy because soon after Phillip lost his vision. Later Phillip and Timothy reached land. Timothy taught Phillip how to live on his own even though he was blind. When the rescue team came to save Phillip, Timothy did not come along because he had been killed in a hurricane a couple weeks before. When Phillip finally returned home he felt very depressed because he couldn't see. Phillips parents decided to try and get his vision back so they took him to the best doctor in New York. While Phillip worked with the doctor in New York, the Author was telling Timothy's life story before he had met Phillip. My opinion on Timothy of the Cay was it was an amazing and exciting book. I thought the book was amazing because Phillip was able to live on the cay by him self without vision, and it was amazing what the Doctor did to try and restore his vision. When I read how Phillip had survived without food, water, or his vision on a cay I couldn't believe it. Phillip fished on his own and got water by himself, I thought that was truly amazing. I thought it was exciting how the Doctor tried to restore his vision because it took a lot of courage buy Phillip and the Doctor, also it was very scary because Phillip could have died. In conclusion Timothy of the Cay by Theodore Taylor it was an amazing and exciting book. This book was amazing and exiting because of what he had to live through and the hardships he fought through. This book could be enjoyed by people of all ages.

Two Tales Twisted Together,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Timothy of the Cay (Paperback)
"Timothy of The Cay' is described as a "Prequel/Sequel" to the book by Theodore Taylor called "The Cay". Before even reading the book, I certainly wondered what was meant by that. How can a book be both a prequel and a sequel simultaneously? Well, perhaps I can answer that one question for you. This book has two settings, two plots, two protagonists; the author jumps back and forth from one to the other. Although I found this very confusing, it also showed me how two people from very different backgrounds could have similar feelings. The sections about Phillip deal with him in the present. He is having trouble knowing that Timothy is more like his family than his parents. The relationship between Phillip and his mother is getting confusing. When Phillip went blind he began to see people beyond the color of their skin. His mother doesn't understand this. His mother thinks blacks and whites should stay apart, like they always had. The parts about Timothy tell the story of his life before meeting Phillip. Timothy is also dealing with racism. For example, as a young man Timothy was hired as a cabin boy on a ship. The next day he came back to find the ship had left; they gave his job to a white boy instead. Timothy is extremely stubborn. So, it might take a few decades, but, he eventually achieves his goals. Even though it seems like two separate stories that have nothing to do with each other, the author twists the tales together. It is similar in an odd way. At a point in the book Phillip and Timothy are about the same age. Both of them are facing incredible struggles, one so he can see, and one so he can go to sea. Throughout the book both Phillip and Timothy contend with the issue of racism. Phillip is a relatively wealthy boy with two parents. Timothy is a poverty-stricken black child with no family. Yet, they both learn to look at a person without judging them by color. This book had many important messages, and descriptions of life from different points of view. Unfortunately, I found it boring and sometimes confusing. "The Cay" was an absolutely wonderful book, full of excitement and adventure. This book deals more with emotional adventures. The principle reason that I didn't like "Timothy of the Cay" was because it never stayed in one time. This made it difficult to understand, since it jumped from way in the past to the present to the more recent past! I actually enjoyed the book more after I finished it than while I was reading it. The message was interesting, however the method of writing made it dull and puzzling.

Timothy of the Cay review,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Timothy of the Cay (Paperback)
Timothy of the Cay, written by Theodore Taylor is a very good book. I think that the author does a very good job at describing the islands and people. I also think that it is interesting how he writes the book, alternating from Phillip's story to Timothy's. In Timothy's story he tells about how he joined the crew on a boat at fourteen years of age up to the time the S.S. Hato is sunk with him as a crewmember. Phillip's story tells about his time after he is rescued. This part includes the operation that Phillip will need to get his sight back and reflections on Timothy, even when Phillip and his dad go back to the cay that Phillip and Timothy got stranded on!In this book there are many parts that the author does not tell you about in the first book in the series, The Cay. One such part is the surgeries. Phillip tells you about these. Another part that is only mentioned briefly is the trip back to the cay. Phillip also tells you about that. This is another reason to like the book Timothy of the Cay. There is a man called Horace Simpson who is a sailor on the first boat Tim sails on. This man is very nice to Tim. When Tim starts climbing up the rigging and gets scared and stops, Horace climbs up and gives him the courage to climb the rest of the way up and back down. Horace says to Tim, "One step at a time boy, go on up." Horace is a big help to Timothy. One of the people who plays a big role in Tim's life is Mamma Geeches. She is the village jumbi chaser. Her job is to chase away evil spirits. She told Tim that his first ship that he sailed on would be cursed. Mamma Geeches is in most of the book, so you hear about her a lot. She is also the woman who tells Tim that his mother is dead. I think that this woman is strange and funny at the same time. The main themes in this book are tenacity and bravery. These are themes because Tim was tenacious when he wanted to become a "coptin" of his own vessel. He worked for over thirty years to earn enough money ($800) to buy a boat. Phillip is brave because he decided to go through with an operation that was very risky and might not even work. The operation was to restore his sight. Three out of nine people who had the surgeries got their sight back, five stayed blind, one was permanently paralyzed, and the last one died. This story takes place in the late 1800's and mid 1900's. In Tim's story the setting is the island Charlotte Amelia. Tim lives in the ghetto-like conditions of Back-O'-All, the area that the black population lives in. It is a hard life and the white population lives in much better conditions on the top of a hill. Phillip's story takes place mostly in a hospital in New York City. In this hospital Phillip has the operation that will restore his sight. Once the operation is over he still cannot see, but the doctor said that he would not be able to see for a week or two. After almost three weeks of waiting, he can answer the question of whether he will see again. The part of the book that really made me think was when the Amagar, the boat that Tim was supposed to sail on, sailed without him because a white boy had volunteered to take the position that Tim had been promised. This made me think about how racist some people were and still are. I feel that we have come a long way since then with the problem of racism. In conclusion, Timothy of the Cay, written by Theodore Taylor is an exceptional book. Even though the author does not put in many exciting parts I really like how he writes the book from two points of view because at the end of some chapters he would leave you needing to keep reading to find out what happens next. Also the characters have their own, defined, detailed personalities. All in all I think that this is a well-written and very good book.

Not nearly as god as the first book,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Timothy of the Cay (Paperback)
I really enjoyed the first book. So, I thought I would read the second book, which was suprisingly a lot worse. The first book had adventure, drama, and a main topic. The second book lacks every one of those things. I thought the parts about Timothy were very boring and didn't interest me one bit. I understand it was important to talk about Timothy as a young boy, growing up with racism, but, the author made it very boring. The parts about Phillip were a little more interesting, simply because it is from the point of view of a blind person. Personally, I would just suggest reading The Cay again, instead of reading a very boring book.

If you have read the book The Cay and you want to know what happened to Timothy before he met Phillip and after Phillip got rescued, this is the book for you. The title of this book is Timothy of the Cay. The author of the book is Theodore Taylor. The book Timothy of the Cay tells the story of Phillip and Timothy. Each chapter switches off between Phillip and Timothy. Phillip goes to a lot of different places which include Panama, Curacao, New York City, and the cay. Timothy goes to St. Thomas, Pennsylvania, France, St. John, Curacao, and a lot of other places. When Theodore Taylor wrote about Phillp it is around the 1940s. The story of Timothy takes place around the 1880s. The characters make up a big part of the book. The two main characters are Phillip and Timothy. Phillip is a blind kid and is 12 years old. Phillip is friendly and is a fighter when things get rough. Timothy ages in the book. He starts at age 12 and by the end he is older than 60. Timothy is strong for his age and he is a black man. Timothy is kind, respectful, and wise to others. I learned from the characters that you should never give up on dreams. The other characters in the book are Phillip's mom and dad, Dr. Pohl, Tante Hannah, and Wobert. Phillip's dad is kind and understanding. Phillip's mom gets very nervous about Phillip. She doesn't like black people and is on the shorter side. Dr. Pohl is a very kind person, has a scruffy voice, and is straight forward. He is also Phillip's eye doctor. Tante Hannah is nice. She is Timothy's guardian and loves Timothy very much. Wobert is probably Timothy's coolest friend because he and Timothy always go fishing together and he tells Phillip fun stories. He has peg legs and is an older man. He also used to be a sailer. The book's most suspenseful part was when Phillip had to have surgery on his eyes. Dr. Pohl has to work near Phillip's brain. It is a very dangerous surgery to do. Phillip was very brave wanting to have the surgery. It makes the reader want to keep reading the book to find out if Phillip will get his eyesight back. In the book Timothy goes out to sea with a lot of older men. He travels in a boat for three years. There are deadly storms and back breaking chores to do. The most difficult chore is to climb the mast to open and close the sails. This was a very breathtaking part because you don't know if he will survive or not. Timothy of the Cay is a heart pounding book and very adventurous. If you want to know what happens to Phillip and Timothy, you will have to read the book and find out.

Timothy of the Cay Review,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Timothy of the Cay (Paperback)
I didn't really know what the Carribean is like before reading this book. Theodore tells the story of a black man named Timothy that has a dream to become captain of a boat. The one looking back on Timothy was a young twelve year old named Phillip. This story also looks at Phillip and his need to see again.Phillip's part in this novel is the reason I loved the book. It shows how he tried his hardest to get his sight back. There is alot more going on in the book and Phillip looks back on it. Timothy is a big reason you will keep turning the pages in this book. He is a tough man who has his heart set on becoming captain of a ship. This brave man is fun and exciting to read about. Phillip and Stew Cat are always together. Wherever Phillip goes, Stew Cat is beside him. Stew Cat and Phillip are best friends. Stew Cat is a cat. Timothy of the Cay has many interesting characters like Phillip, Timothy and Stew Cat. As Phillip is blind he describes people with detail. He doesn't describe them with sight. He describes then using his smell and hearing. How they sound and smell determines what he says about them. A big theme of the story is prejudice. It teaches you that black people are as good as white people. For example, Timothy is a bukra boy for a ship and they say he is their best worker. This book takes place in a time where all whites were prejudiced. A time that white people thought they were always right. Everything revolved around whites at this time. Timothy is the hero of this book. Whenever Phillip is scared he sees Timothy. He also hears him very often. Timothy is heroic as he tried to save many lives on a sinking boat. He becomes captain of a ship and names it the Hannah Gumbs after his fostermother which was very nice. Even though this happened a long time ago you see that prejudice still happens today. If you want to know about the journeys of Timothy, or the pain Phillip goes through just to see, read Timothy of the Cay. |
