Timeless quality to her tunes.,
By power (London, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tim's House (Audio CD)
The 24-year-old guitarist recorded her album in a friend's bedroom and named it "Tim's House" in his honour.
Ignored by mainstream press and radio, "Tim's House" is the latest example of an artist - and an album - bypassing the traditional publicity routes and finding success by word of mouth on the internet. The homemade album has proved in UK a unexpected hit with iPod fans who had downloaded it from the iTunes website in their thousands - knocking Take That and Kaiser Chiefs from the top spots. Walsh has risen from nowhere to top the iTunes charts - ironic, considering she doesn't own an iPod. Hailing from Burnham On Crouch in rural Essex, Walsh also claims not to have turned on her telly since July 2005. You can kind of hear it in her music, which seems untouched by modern life, and her voice, which is as calm and unfettered as the late Eva Cassidy's. It's not even remotely revolutionary: "Tim's House" is delicately poised, composed of gentle strums, brush pats on a snare drum and Kate's whisper. But that's the only platform she needs, because in these quiet moments a power resides - a bruised intensity that creeps from beneath pretty tunes. There's a timeless quality to the songs too - especially the gorgeous "Your Song and Goldfish" - and the subtle, warm production. If you're searching for Britain's answer to Norah Jones, look no further.

Soothing and ethereal are the only two words that I think of, but even they don't do justice to this artist's amazing vocal tone and breathtaking lyrics. I can play these songs over and over without getting sick of them, as each time I hear them I hear a different message and sense different themes. I love listening to it at the end of the day--it is so mellow and relaxing, yet intellectually/emotionally engaging enough to keep me from falling asleep! I definitely will be purchasing other albums by this artist in the future.

An indie-come-out-of-nowhere singer/songwriter has made her way for her critically acclaimed album, Tim's House. Her album made it to the top of the UK iTunes chart, she can accomplish lots more in the coming years!
Her musical style is very close to early Jewel, Damien Rice, Tori Amos. You can basically only hear her voice and herself strumming through the songs. Once in a while you can hear a little backup vocals+instruments. It's a perfect starter music for a nice quiet weekend morning. I believe the songs' compositions and tempos can definitely be improved. All of her songs tend to have a slow tempo, lullaby like tempo. That part can be changed a sightly bit.

This is a treasure to love and enjoy, with the guitar in the front and the chimey sound of the autoharp. She has a very enticing way in some of her songs, Your Song is so dreamy and ethoreal. Her pics are very beautiful to go along with her romantic themes, almost from another time, Her producer Tim Bidwell got it right , what a listen, a great mood lifter. Very sparse, but full at the same time , just love it

This is one of the most intimate CDs that I have ever heard, it is a very sparse, but very good recording. She sings songs of love and heartbreak. Her voice is refreshing and she has some very pretty nuances.
I have heard that it was recorded in Tim's living room. She plays some very good acoustic guitar and it is recorded to sound so natural, it rings. She beats many a pro singer or big label singer in her delivery. I liked this disc so much, I listened to it 4 times all of the way thru the 1st day I got it. It will always be special to me because of a special lady who reccommended it to me. The gal is a musician and knows good stuff. The disc reminds me of this gal, cause I'm kinda crazy bout her now. Her songs remind me a bit of Nancy Griffin, but Kate has a better voice.

This is an excellent album. Every song is just as great as the last.
Kate is cool, sweet, smooth and talented. If you're in the mood for mellow and contemplative with just a hint of UK ethnicity this is the perfect CD. |
