Editorial Reviews

This fascinating and heartfelt documentary directed by renowned magician Teller follows an eccentric inventor and genius, Tim Jenison, who seeks to understand the painting techniques used by Dutch Master Johannes Vermeer by creating a painting by the famous painter from scratch. This wonderful film features a beautiful score by Hollywood orchestrator and composer Conrad Pope (My Week With Marylin).

I recently saw the documentary “Tim’s Vermeer” in the theater and made a mental note to myself to check out the soundtrack afterwards, as I thought the music was nicely placed in the documentary. The soundtrack is composed by veteran film composer Conrad Pope. Some of his earlier soundtracks include “Moonrise Kingdom”, “My Week with Marilyn”, and most recently “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug”.

“Tim’s Vermeer – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack” (22 tracks; 44 min.) opens with a gorgeous orchestral “Vermeer’s Theme”, one of the best pieces on here. Then comes a playful “Tim, The Inventor”, with the xylophone featured prominently. After these initial 2 tracks, we get lots of shorter pieces, many at or just above a minute in length. “The Museum” (when Tim visits the Vermeer Museum in the Netherlands, is another gorgeous (and too brief) orchestral interlude, with the flute up front, as is the case on “The Pilgrimage to Delft”. As happens often with these soundtracks, you can almost make out the entire movie from just reading the titles to these music tracks (“Tim Builds Vermeer’s Room”, “Tim In Trouble”, etc.). I suppose it’s unavoidable but it’s still a bit annoying, certainly for anyone who hasn’t seen the documentary yet. The best sequence for me on this soundtrack are tracks 15 through 19, when we follow Tim as he recreates Vermeer’s The Music Lesson painting from scratch, and these tracks are really one long suite. Beautiful. Bottom line: Pope has created a gorgeous soundtrack for “Tim’s Vermeer”, and if you are a fan of orchestral soundtracks (and you know who you are!), I would strongly encourage you to check this out. Please note that Bob Dylan’s “When I Paint My Masterpiece” (which plays over the movie’s end credits) is NOT included in this soundtrack.

When I bought "Tim's Vermeer" I thought I was buying the movie. When it arrived I realized I'd read the Amazon add wrong. I lent it to a friend who thought it was background music for a movie and that alone made her not want to listen to it. I took it home and listened to it. It was a little movie style but over all made a nice sound in my room. I think of it as excellent.

I saw this at a film festival and then purchased it for my art student away in Italy. A great movie and very interesting to say the least.
